    Default 2006 InterBasket Award Nominations

    I know this is a little late for 2006, but I still want this to happen. To keep this credible, please be as objective as you can when nominating and voting... So in 2006, who were your;

Player of the Year? (from any country -- why did you nominate them?)
NBA Player of the Year? (international or not, why?)
International Player of the Year (Non-US, why?)
    European Player of the Year
Asian/Oceania/Middle East Player of the Year
    African Player of the Year
Americas Player of the Year (non-US: Canada, Latin America)
    U22 Rising Star (why?)
Team of the Year (Any Team, why?)
    All World
(including US) First-Team, Second-Team, Third Team

A maximum of 10 nominations for each category will be allowed
, and a total of 30 nominations for All-World First Team Second Team and Third Team. More information to come, but get those nominations out, I will close this thread in a week's time.

Player of the Year? Nowitzki. He took Dallas to the Finals, and single-handedly avoided disaster for German NT.
NBA Player of the Year? Dwayne Wade. Being the Finals MVP always is too much.
International Player of the Year? Dirk Nowitzki. He finally turned into a superstar.
European Player of the Year? Nowitzki.
Asian/Oceania/Middle East Player of the Year Yao Ming. This is the year he turned into the best center on the face of the Earth.
African Player of the Year I can't choose between Joaquim Gomes, Eduardo Mingas and Ime Udoka.
North American Player of the Year Carmelo Anthony, because of his NBA and FIBA performances.
U22 Rising Star LeBron just turned 22 , and I could add Chris Paul & Rudy Fernández.
Team of the Year Spanish NT.
All World First-Team, Second-Team, Third Team
1° Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Nowitzki, Pau Gasol.
2° Chris Paul, Theo Papaloukas, Le Bron James, Tim Duncan, Yao Ming
3° Pepe Sánchez, Paul Pierce, Andrés Nocioni, Jorge Garbajosa, Shaq.

Hey... you missed Latin American Player of the year... - Tie between Nocioni & Pepe Sánchez.

I tried to pick just one of each item. If I got it wrong, say so and I'll edit.

I suppose we could put Luol Deng under African player of the year. Even though he has a British passport he was born in the Sudan.

You are right, I changed it... I meant the North-American player of the Year to be Americas Player of the Year (non-US)

Player of the Year? Kill Bill Spanoulis, b/c he was the golden dagger to Team USA's plan of reclaiming first place in WBC

NBA Player of the Year? Yao Ming...this fracture is going to be more of a rude awakening for him to get meaner and more commanding in the paint.

International Player of the Year (Non-US, why?): Dirk Nowitzki. Who can stop him?

European Player of the Year: Dirk Nowtizki

Asian/Oceania/Middle East Player of the Year: Yao Ming

African Player of the Year: Loul Deng

(non-US) North American Player of the Year: Is Nocioni under 22?

U22 Rising Star (why?): Harris, Syracuse University Guard. Has leadership skills as a freshman. Beoheim needs a few more goodmen and the 'Cuse are going to win another natl championship if Harris stays for 4 yrs.

Team of the Year (Any Team, why?) The Raptors. No longer the "Craptors". With Colangelo @ the reins and hopefully in the future a new coach in town for the players they have now...This will be the "flashy" team of the Eastern Conference
    All World (including US) FirstTeam:
    C: Yao Ming
    PF: Dwight Howard
    Sf: Dirk Nowitzki
SG: Kobe Bryant (as much as I hate to admit it)
    PG: Steve Nash

Second Team: (Funny how this team is comprised of mostly Spanish speaking
    and mostly from Argentina!
    C: Oberto
    PF: Garbajosa
    SF: Carmelo Anthony
    SG: Ginobilli
    PG: Parker (The French Dude)

    Third Team:
    C: Ilgauskas
    PF: Elton Brand
    SF: Nocioni
    SG: Barbosa
    PG: Chris Paul

Player of the Year? To me it's between Dwyane Wade, Steve Nash, or Pau Gasol - all having won something significant. Honorable mention to Jorge Garbajosa, LeBron James, Theodoros Papaloukas, Dirk Nowitzki (if he won anything, I think his ranking would be different), and further down the line is Yao Ming and Kobe Bryant

    NBA Player of the Year?
Dwyane Wade wins, but honorable mention goes to Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, LeBron James, and Carmelo Anthony

International Player of the Year Dirk Nowitzki, Jorge Garbajosa, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol, Theodoros Papaloukas, Yao Ming

    European Player of the Year
Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, Theodoros Papaloukas, Jorge Garbajosa

Asian/Oceania/Middle East Player of the Year Yao Ming, Fadi El-Khatib

    African Player of the Year
    Eduardo Mingas, Luol Deng

    Americas Player of the Year
Steve Nash, Luis Scola, Manu Ginobili

U22 Rising Star - Dwight Howard, Andris Biedrins, Chris Paul, Yi Jianlian, Ricky Rubio, Sergio Rodriguez, Monta Ellis

Team of the Year Spanish National Team, Florida Gators (they played great team ball), Miami Heat

    All World
    First-Team
    C -
Shaquille O'Neal (Not nearly as dominant, but was pivotal in Miami winning the NBA championship, his fourth ring)
    F -
Dirk Nowitzki (Took Mavs to Finals, carried Germany)
    F -
Pau Gasol (First NBA All-Star Game, Came back to WBC, won championship and MVP or tournament despite being injured for finals)
G - Dwyane Wade (Simply amazing, NBA Finals MVP, Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year)
G - Steve Nash (NBA MVP with very ungaudy stats, the motor that keeps the Suns competitive though Amare Stoudemire being injured)

    Second-Team

C - Yao Ming - (Injured a lot, but Ming has turned the corner in the NBA to become the next dominant big man, led WBC in scoring)
    F -
Jorge Garbajosa (WBC Champion, Superbasket Mr. Europe, NBA Rookie)
    F -
Carmelo Anthony (Performance during end of last NBA season, WBC, and beginning of 2006-07 season)
G - Kobe Bryant (yes, it hurts)
G - Theodoros Papaloukas (Led CSKA to Euroleague championship, EL Final Four MVP, Best EL PG and silver in the WBC)

    Third Team
    Second-Team
C - Tim Duncan (Had an off-year statistically, but was the rock for a Spurs team that won the most games ever in franchise history)
    F -
LeBron James (though he didn't win anything, I think people tend to forget how great LBJ last year... and at times, he was completely unstoppable)
    F -
Luis Scola (Euro forward of the year)
G - Juan Carlos Navarro (great final vs Greece)
G - Chauncey Billups (So-called Mr. Big shot is the driver behind the wheel of a great Piston team)

Honorable mentions to Manu Ginobili (his injury-plagued season in the NBA affected his nomination), Chris Paul, Dimitris Diamantidis, Gilbert Arenas, Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, Shawn Marion, Jason Kidd, and Juan Calderon... both Adam Morrison and JJ Redick deserve a little love

Player of the Year? Dirk Nowitzki (lead the Mavs to the NBA finals and had one of the greatest playoff displays ever with 50 pts. More than a half of the German NT is him and his heroic 47 pts against Angola were just unforgettable), Theo Papaloukas (he was huge with CSKA in the final as well as with Greece), Dwayne Wade (without him the Heat wouldn't have won the ring).

NBA Player of the Year? Steve Nash (another good season for him, truly all-around player, not many like him), Dirk Nowitzki (read above), Dwayne Wade.

International Player of the Year Dirk Nowitzki and Theo Papaloukas again plus Pau Gasol (great with the Spanish NT, although he didn't play in the final).

European Player of the Year Who else? Dirk Nowitzki and also Theo Papaloukas

Asian/Oceania/Middle East Player of the Year Yao Ming (the year that confirmed him as the best centre in the world), Fadi el Khatib (great WC he had).

African Player of the Year Joaquim Gomes and Eduardo Mingas (the leaders of a surpring Angola team at the WC), Ime Udoka (good WC for him).

Americas Player of the Year (non-US: Canada, Latin America) Steve Nash, Andrés Nocioni (confirmed he has a secure and extremely valuable spot in the Bulls and in the NBA), Manu Ginobili (a talisman for both the Spurs and Argentina).

U22 Rising Star Rudy Fernández (a leader at 21), Sofoklis Schortsanitis (proved he is a powerful and almost unstoppable centre), Ricky Rubio (the kid making wonders against men), Andris Biedriņš (the year he became a top player), Yi Jianlian (athleticism and productivity).

Team of the Year CSKA, Spain, Heat, Greece (you know why )

    All World first team
    Steve Nash
    Kobe Bryant
    Pau Gasol
    Dirk Nowitzki
    Yao Ming

    All World second team
    Theo Papaloukas (Leandro Barbosa)
    JC Navarro (Gilbert Arenas)
    Carmelo Anthony (Andrés Nocioni)
    Luis Scola
    Tim Duncan (Shaquille O'Neal)

    All World third team
    Dwayne Wade (Tony Parker)
    Manu Ginobili (Dimitris Diamantidis)
    LeBron James
    Jorge Garbajosa
    Žydrūnas Ilgauskas (Fabricio Oberto)

EDIT: A note to say how 2006 was a bad year for Lithuanian basketball in general :/

Jose Juan Barea for the LatinAmerican Player of the year even if he doesnt have a chance and most of you dont think he should be there

this nomination is based in his gold winning shot on the CentroAmerican Games in Colombia, on being ranked on the top 10 in assists and points in the NCAA and against all odds, making the Dallas Mavericks squad being 5'10" ( cant believe he went undrafted )

and his record setting performance in Portsmouth

wtf? he was also a runner up for the BSN Championship in Puerto Rico
