      for updating the thread

we got France, Spain, Serbia, Brazil and Egypt ! Group of death lol

with all those 4 giants, looks like there is no realistic chance for us to advance from this group but our coach thinks we have a chance

The Group is very similar to what we had in 2010, probably even tougher ! but at least this time we can have a better preparation. both Samad and Haddadi will join Mahram after the end of their job in China. and since fortunately/unfortunately all of our top players play in Iran, we can have all of them for the whole preparation period (for the first time after many years) I just hope no injuries happen during these camps (or before that, during the league) we missed Samad and Afagh badly in Istanbul in 2010.

They will form two teams this year A and B.

Can we expect Kazemi back for Iran? I remember 2010 where he had a good showing against USA. He surprised me about his mobility.

of course why not ? I think it was one of the reasons he came back to play in Iran, to be available for the national team this year. even last year he personally wanted to play for the team but it was Becirovic's decision. He doesn't accept players join the team late. they have to be there from the start of preparation.

              very though group indeed!
But I'm still optimistic. if preparation goes well and without any injury setbacks, we have a good chance of beating Egypt and perhaps Serbia! (if we have a very good day and the Serbs have a lousy performance) after all we have beaten Serbia once in Diamond cup 2008 prior to the Olympic games. Same goes for a younger Brasil! (without the experienced players), but that is probably expecting too much!
In any case, we can probably advance to the next stage with two wins!
I have full faith in our team this year! in my years of watching basketball, I have seen many underdog teams with great chemistry and hungry for the win, overcoming much tougher adversaries on the court!

Samad had his debut with Mahram today. he and Haddadi helped Mahram to came from behind to beat Zob Ahan in Tehran. boxscore

for Haddadi it was his 2nd game with Mahram. they also got Sam Daghlas will play from the next game. the super league final will be interesting between Mahram and Petrochimi. almost all of our NT key players are in these two teams. Oshin, Samad and Haddadi for Mahram, and Kamrani, Arsalan and Afagh for Petro.

Iran anticipates making second round of FIBA World Cup, coach says

TEHRAN – Iranian national basketball team coach Mehmed Becirovic said that the Iranian team has been pitted with the strong teams in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, but they are anticipating reaching the next stage.

The Iranian outfit has been drawn with London Olympics silver medalist Spain in Group A as well as the European champion France, Brazil, Serbia, and Egypt.

“Iran has been drawn in a tough group but we will do our best to book a place in the next round. I always like to compete with the best teams. Iran has high-quality players and could advance from the group stage. That’s why we will be participating in the competitions,” Becirovic said.

“Spain is the host and one of the best basketball teams. France is European champion, and Brazil has several NBA players. Serbia will participate in the tournament with its good young players, but we want to qualify for the next round,” the Slovenian stated.

“Iran will hold a pre-tournament training camp in a European country. In the training camp, we will prepare to face the strong teams. I am looking forward to playing friendlies with the big teams as well,” he said.

The 2014 FIBA World Cup will be held in Spain from August 30 to September 14.
Iran is scheduled to face host Spain in Granada on August 30.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the next round, where the 16 remaining teams will play a typical bracket-style series of do-or-die games until a champion is crowned.

Mahram and Petrochimi in WABA Champions Cup final

great game for Haddadi, specially in 2nd half , with 33pts and 17 rebounds. Samad also had 31pts for Mahram.
not a good game for A. Kazemi, he had some nice dunks but he was controlled by Oshin the whole game.

You guys can beat Egypt easily, you all did that in the 2013 Jones cup. Brazil is also a wild card, they are seriously under-performing and went 0-4 for the Fiba Americas 2013 so, yes you guys might advance to second round.

Interesting article about American player Jonathan Gibson who expressed his wish to play for the Iranian national team by going to IRIBF office and asking Mashhoon directly !

                          Link

Gibson joined Petrochimi during the Iranian superleague playoffs and played great games for them. he was final series MVP.
