Half a century ago Brazil became once again champion, winning the 4th FIBA World Men’s Championship held in Rio de Janeiro, May 12-25, 1963.
After the 1959 win in Chile, this was the second consecutive world title for the Brazilian NT – but also the last one.
Brazil went undefeated through the tournament, ending with a 6-0 record and beating in the last game a strong USA team (85-81), which had in the roster future NBA stars such as Willis Reed, Lucious Jackson and Don Kojis. Veterans Wlamir Marques and Amaury Pasos scored 26 and 22 pts for the winners, while Phillips 66ers all-time great Jerry Shipp was high for the losing side with 22.
Brazil beat Soviet Union as well (90-79), avenging the double defeat suffered four years earlier in Chile.

Wlamir Marques and Amaury Pasos were named to the All-Tournament team, besides Aleksander Petrov (USSR), Don Kojis (USA) and Maxime Dorigo (France). Additionally, Wlamir was honored the tournament’s MVP.
Amaury, Wlamir, Rosa Branca, Waldemar and Jatyr were crowned world champions for the second time.
Future HoF Maciel Pereira Ubiratan, probably the greatest Brazilian center ever, made his debut in the Sr NT at just 19 y, and he would star on the international scene for over 15 years.
Interestingly, few days earlier the Brazilian NT finished second to USA at the 4th Pan American Games, played in São Paulo, April 23- May 3, 1963.
Both Brazilian and USA teams were basically the same (10 on 12 members) later playing at the World Championship.
