  • Serie A 2012-2013 - PLAYOFFS

    #1 Varese (23-7) - #8 Venezia (16-14)
    #4 Milano (19-11) - #5 Siena (18-12)

    #2 Sassari (22-8) - #7 Cantù (17-13)
    #3 Roma (20-10) - #6 Reggio Emilia (18-12)

Quarterfinals, semifinals, finals, all series are best of 7.

Well, it seems to me we're going to enjoy a very promising postseason, with the Milano-Siena clash in the QF. More generally, all the matchups should be quite balanced and there is room for upsets. One thing, for sure, is that one side of the bracket (Varese, Siena, Milano, Venezia) is clearly stronger than the other, although there should not be a clear favorite for the final win, so I say that at least six off the eight teams have chances to clinch the title.
Most of the contenders have made late-season movements to add quality and depth to their roster.

Varese -----> Dejan Ivanov (PF, Lietuvos Rytas)
Sassari -----> Drew Gordon (PF/C Partizan), Sani Becirovic (PG, Petrochimchi)
Roma -----> Bryan Bailey (PG/SG, Bayreuth)
    Milano -----> Pops Mensah-Bonsu (PF/C, Cajasol)
Siena -----> Dionte Christmas (SG, free agent, formerly with CSKA)
Cantù -----> Joe Ragland (PG/SG, Ucam Murcia)

Well, it was kind of a blowout, but yes, he appears to be in great shape and very focused on adding that one trophy he's still lacking (never won the Italian league).

Both Milano and Siena have an A license and will compete in the next EL edition.
If the league is won by any other team except for those two, than Italy will automatically bring in another team, otherwise it will be pretty difficult to have a third team (through a B License) in the competition.

      QUARTERFINALS - GAME 1

      Milano-Siena 103-79 - M.Hairston 20 pts + 3 rebs + 1 ast in 25 mins (5/8 2p, 2/3 3p, 4/5 ft), A.Gentile 16 pts + 4 rebs + 2 asts in 20 mins (4/6 2p, 2/4 3p, 2/3 ft), I.Bouroussis 14 pts + 8 rebs + 1 blk + 2 stls (6/12 2p, 0/1 3p, 2/5 ft), P.Mensah-Bonsu 13 + 8 rebs in 13 mins (6/7 2p, 1/5 ft), JR Bremer 13 pts + 2 rebs + 1 stl + 3 asts (2/3 2p, 2/5 3p, 3/4 ft) ; D.Christmas 30 pts + 1 reb + 2 stls + 2 asts (3/5 2p, 5/8 3p, 9/9 ft), B.Brown 13 pts + 2 asts (4/8 2p, 1/6 3p, 2/2 ft)

      Varese-Venezia 92-74
      - Mi.Green 25 pts + 6 rebs + 3 stls + 7 asts (5/9 2p, 3/5 3p, 6/6 ft), B.Dunston 16 pts + 5 rebs + 4 blks + 1 stl + 4 asts (5/8 2p, 6/6 ft), A.Banks 12 pts + 4 rebs + 3 stls + 3 asts (6/9 2p, 0/1 3p, 0/1 ft), A.Polonara 11 pts + 1 reb + 2 stls (2/3 2p, 2/4 3p, 1/1 ft) ; S.Szewczyk 14 pts + 9 rebs + 1 blk + 1 stl + 1 ast (2/5 2p, 2/5 3p, 4/6 ft), K.Clark 13 pts + 2 rebs + 3 asts (4/7 2p, 1/6 3p, 2/2 ft), Y.Diawara 12 pts + 5 rebs + 1 stl + 3 asts (5/9 2p, 0/1 3p, 2/4 ft)

In the end, one upset, with Reggio Emilia stealing an away-win in Roma.
I guess that's going to be the most balanced series among the two most surprising teams of the season. It would be quite a shock to see a newly-promoted team (Reggio Emilia) make it to the semifinals.

      Sassari-Cantù sounds a lot like a no-contest now.
Sassari is on a roll and home-court advantage is a huge boost for them. Also, with Becirovic and Gordon as immediate contributors, they added depth and talent, so I expect them to go on quite easily. They're in the easier side of the bracket and this really can turn into a major chance for them to advance to the finals for the first time. Cantù is in a mess, they came into an identity crisis since Markoishvili's move to Galatasaray with too many players on a huge slump (Tabu, Leunen, Brooks, Cusin...) and Trinchieri seemingly losing the grip on the squad. Worst news is that Aradori, perhaps the only one who was keeping the team alive, got hurt early in game1 and will certainly miss at least game2.

As for Siena, while I think it's way too early to let the curtain fall on their dynasty, it's undeniable that yesterday's blowout is not the way you want to start a series against your biggest rivals, especially if you're aware you need to steal an away-win to advance. And Milano couldn't even count on Langford, who was out for a minor injury, but if Alessandro Gentile manages to keep his hot streak alive (16 ppg in the last 16 games) this is not going to be a big problem.
Siena lacks size inside and desperately need to increase its 3-pt% to have a chance to win.
Christmas scored 30 yesterday, but they need to find more offensive weapons and, most of all, make a better defensive job and get something out off their big men. True that Kangur, Sanikidze and Eze are no superstars, but still they can't keep playing like yesterday or Siena is in a real danger.

          MILANO leads the series 2-0

Game two was definitely exciting for all series. Hats off to Roma's pride, after losing the home-court advantage in game 1 and despite missing a couple of key players like Jordan Taylor and Gani Lawal, both injured, they reacted brutally in game 2 and thrashed Reggio Emilia with a superb defensive performance and a collective effort.

Cantù lost again but fought hard and despite the absence of Aradori gave Sassari a big scare by leading for most of the game. Sassari bounced back midway through the 4th quarter with a couple of key 3-pointers by Gordon and Vanuzzo and then they sealed the deal staying perfect from the ft line (19/19). Despite the loss, Cantù appeared to be in better shape than everyone expected and given the huge boost they usually get when playing at home, I wouldn't be much surprised if they manage to tie this series at 2-2.
Don't know if they will be able to steal a road win, though, and I have a feeling they won't have the same chance they had in game 2...

Varese won but the final score looks pretty unfair to Venezia in a very balanced game where the lead switched between the two teams several times.
Venezia started really bad, struggling with the fouls and then trailing by 16 pts, but they eventually managed to cut the margin and even go ahead in the score, with a good collective effort and a nice help by Italian vets Marconato and Rosselli.
But Varese showed mental strength and winning attitude and with several clutch shots by Ere and mostly by Sakota (not only threes, but also a good defense and a key rebound), managed to take the lead again and then extended it in the last couple of minutes.

          Incredible game in Milano.
Siena managed to forget about game 1 blowout and all of its problems and led by another great performance by Hackett and Ress went ahead by 6 pts (62-68) in the final minute of the game. It seemed over but Bremer hit a couple of free throws and then, a few seconds later, Marques Green buried a 3-pointer (67-68). With about 35 seconds left, Hackett proved to be clutch again by hitting a shot that seemingly killed the game (67-70), but in the last possession of the game Ress made a tragic mistake by fouling Hairston while he was pulling up for three. Hairston made 3/3 from the line and tied the game up, Kangur took the last shot but missed it. In the OT, the hero was JR Bremer, with a couple of killing threes and the decisive 2-pointer down the final stretch. Brown had the last chance to take the game to the 2nd OT but missed the shot.
Milano is 2-0 despite Langford's absence, and the series now moves to Siena.
Don't really know how Siena will react after such a wasted opportunity. This could be one more nail in their coffin, but I'm confident they still have something left in the tank somewhere...They're almost dead, but as long as they breathe their Italian dominance is not really over...

              Varese leads 3-0

Another strong showing by Varese, which shuts down Venezia's hopes to get back into the game in the 2nd half and now the series is (almost) over.
Great job by Varese, that's how you want to prove your strength in the playoffs, confirming the top seed was fully deserved and the team is really good enough to win the league.

Reggio Emilia returned the game 2 blowout thrashing Roma at home. Once again Roma couldn't count on starters Jordan Taylor and Gani Lawal and just didn't have enough scoring power and depth to steal an away-win in a very hot and difficult arena. The challenge between super scorers Donell Taylor and Gigi Datome is a beauty, but I can't see Roma win this series unless they recover their injured players. On the other hand, besides Donell Taylor, Reggio Emilia is showing a collective efficiency with a lot of players appearing in great shape (Brunner and Cinciarini among them) and confidence.

Dramatic and exciting game in Cantù, where the hosts kept the lead for most of the time but never managed to kill the game. Sassari came back and even went ahead in the score in the final minutes but Cantù had enough mental strength to avoid what could've been a fatal loss. The game-winning plays were made by Jeff Brooks, who scored a 2+1 basket right after an offensive rebound and blocked Travis Diener's (only one assist, for him ) 3-pt shot on the buzzer. Cantù is still alive and should they recover Aradori and win again in game 4, this series could be a lot more balanced than expected.

Great reaction by Siena after their dramatic loss in game 2, in an almost do-or-die game. Once again Banchi opted to bench Brown at the beginning to give Hackett the playmaking duties. Daniel dominated the game (20 pts, 11 asts, 37 ranking) showing leadership and personality, but also Moss and Brown himself were terrific. The teams are still battling with injuries (Siena was missing injured Kangur and Janning, Milano still without Langford) but some players are expected to recover and play in game 4.

Well, now it's very unpredictable, it will mostly be up to Milano's ability to handle the pressure, which is their biggest issue.

                  Varese leads 3-1

I'm really enjoying this postseason, as it's very balanced as it wasn't since a lot of years.
The only series which seems to be already decided is Varese-Venezia, although the top-seeded team of the league has lost yesterday on the road in game 4.
I have to say that Venezia played a very good game, with much aggressiveness since the tip-off and did all the little things a lot better than in the previous games, where despite staying close for most time, they had to regret silly mistakes (missed layups, defensive miscues, turnovers...) that in the end were decisive. KeeKee Clark - absolutely a key player for them - was finally back at his own levels and dominated the game. Venezia is deep and talented, with a lot of experienced players, I guess they will once again be very competitive in game 5 at Varese, but still I think Varese will get the job done as the game goes on, so I think this series is coming to an end.

Great road win for Roma in a very tight and balanced game, which was decided in the final minute.
Of course it was clear that Roma's hopes to tie this series and look to advancing to the semifinals depended on Jordan Taylor and Gani Lawal's comebacks, and although hurt, they both recovered and were pretty decisive in game 4, especially Taylor, who was clutch in the final stretch and was the game's mvp.
Another good news for Roma is that Bobby Jones had a very solid performance. He's a rollercoaster, you never know what he's going to give you, he can be factor or a ghost with his inconsistence, still I believe he's their X-Factor with his versatility and Roma's ambitions forcibly have to deal with this.

Mission accomplished for Cantù, they needed to win both home games to keep its hopes alive, since winning in Sassari is very difficult right now and if they had lost in game 3 or 4 they had to win twice on the road which woud've been almost impossible for them.
Cantù deserved the win, keeping a quite comfortable lead throughout the game, although they suddenly stopped playing with 2 minutes left on the clock and with a lot of crazy turnovers and several 3-pointers/3 pt plays by Becirovic and Thornton they let Sassari come closer and closer. In the end with just 5 seconds left, Cantù let their opponents cut the margin to only 2-points and Leunen turned the ball over once more to give Thornton the chance to shoot for the win on the buzzer, but fortunately for Cantù, he had to shoot it from too far and the ball just hit the rim.
The good news for Cantù is the huge impact that Joe Ragland managed to have on the team in such a short time since his arrival. He was the game MVP hitting an impressive streak of shots to destroy Sassari's zone defense in the 4th quarter. Besides that, he's also the main reason why Alex Tyus finally found a way to be a factor after fading for quite a long period. Cantù desperately needed a PG and a leader and for now Ragland is the answer.
And oh, with just 6 pts scored in game 4, Drake Diener's impressive streak of 54 consecutive games in which he scored in double-digits came to an end. He's human too.
In game 4 Sacchetti opted to let Ignerski play again, keeping Easley out due to the foreign players' rules, but the Pole's performance was kinda poor, so I guess he will just go on with the Gordon and Easley connection which was working well. I really don't get why he decided to make this change, considering the good results he was having.

A tight, nervous game also in Siena, where the hosts needed about 35 minutes before making the decisive run which allowed them to tie this series.
Besides Brown's 17 pts, surprisingly Siena has found key contributors in Eze and Carraretto, while Janning, recovered from an injury and taking Christmas' place in the rotations didn't do much.
Overall, it was a quite disappointing performance by Milano, which had a lot from Langford, back on the court from his injury, but almost all of the others didn't have an impact. Although I believe Langford is a star and Milano's best player overall, I think he just doesn't fit in well there alongside guys like Hairston and Gentile, that means that even if Milano gets stronger with all of them available the team loses much in terms of chemistry.
Milano still has the homecourt advantage, but game 5 will take place in Desio, not Milano, perhaps it could have a little impact on the game itself (I don't think, but whatever), who knows.

Varese were the best team during the regular season, but I doubt if they can pass Milano or Siena in a seria even with the home court advantage
                      2022/2023:
                      PG: Brown, D-BA, Ziv
                      SG: Baldwin, Hollins
                      SF: Hillard, Pnini, Menco
                      PF: Martin, Colson, Cohen
                      PF: Nebo, Poyters, Sorkin

Really? I didn't hear or read anything related to Drake Diener heading to Maccabi TA.
I think it's too early to know where he's going to play next season, it also depends on how Sassari ends this campaign and if they're going to play in Euroleague.
Also, we have to consider he's been playing in Italy since starting his professional career, he speaks the language and enjoys living and playing in the same team with his cousin.
Another thing to consider is that both Dieners are rumored to get a passport (Italian for Travis, Bulgarian for Drake), should this happen, it may change a lot of things.

In LegaDue playoffs, a huge upset was made yesterday with newly-promoted and 8th-seeded Trento kicking out top-ranked and huge candidate to the promotion Barcellona (they had players like Taurean Green, Dwight Hardy, Craig Callahan, Jobey Thomas, Alessandro Cittadini...) with a terrific 3-0 sweep which never happened before over here.
So Trento (with only two foreign players, veterans BJ Elder and Michael Umeh + Andres Forray, who's from Argentina but holds an Italian passport) advances to the semis, that's what you can call a terrible rookie, since they also managed to surprisingly win Italian LegaDue Cup a couple months ago. Not bad in your first year at that level.

A bit off-topic: Does anyone know what is going on with Pallacanestro Treviso? Last time I heard from them, Ricky Pittis was trying to raise money for a new project. Did the team disappear or is it lingering on the minor leagues?

The team (Treviso Basket) is competing in the Italian minor leagues and hoping to get a wild card to compete in LegaDue next season.
