The Japanese Basketball Association have announced the player pool for the FIBA Asia Women's World Cup Qualifying Tournament:

    Yuko Oga
    Emi Kudeken
    Miho Kezumi
    Michiko Miyamoto
    Saori Fujiyoshi
    Arisa Fujiwara
    Asami Yoshida
    Maya Kawahara
    Wan Xenjing
    Kumiko Oba
    Mutya Mori
    Maki Takada
    Chio Kibayashi
    Yuka Mamiya
    Kana Motoyama
    Sayaka Okamoto
    Chika Sakuragi
    Ramu Tokashiki
    Chinatsu Yamamoto
    Megumi Shinohara
    Rui Machida
    Yuki Miyazawa
    Naho Miyoshi
    Moeko Nagaoka

A young team. Oga is the oldest as she is only 30 years old. Teeners like Rui, Yuki, Naho and Moeko are all 19 years of age.

Since Japan always brings two centers and three power forwards for their front-court depth, the following could already be a lock, not withstanding injuries:

    C - Maki Takada / Megumi Shinohara
PF - Yuka Mamiya / Mutya Mori

While it will be a toss up between Ramu Tokashiki and Yuki Miyazawa. But maturation favors Tokashiki.

The player pool has plenty of guards and forwards for consideration. In this case for stability measure, the point guard rotation is pre-determined with Yuko Oga and Emi Kudeken. Both happen to be the most seasoned players in the pool.

Miyuki Sugiyama (Wan Xenjing) was listed off the player pool due to citizenship issues until FIBA gives clearance.

      EDIT:

Miyuki Sugiyama (Li Mingyang) was listed off the player pool due to citizenship issues until FIBA gives clearance.

No. Wang Cenjing (188cm, born 1987 in Tianjin, China) is different from Miyuki Sugiyama = Li Mingyang (196cm, born 1994 in Changchun, China). Wang is still on Japan's training camp roster, but she's probably not someone to worry about. Li, on the other hand, if you look at her height and age, is a huge prospect for Japan, and before this, one of the best Chinese prospects. Li was one of the main players for China that finished 3rd at 2010 U17 Champs.

Japan has been recruiting Chinese women's players at an alarming rate. We don't know the specifics, but you can read this about a lawsuit that was filed in 2011, on how JBA is probably providing huge money to the clubs to get Chinese players to change citizenship.

Risa Kawamura = Li Shasha won the lawsuit this year.

At the same time, China has no one else to blame because it cares little about WCBA players's welfare, and certainly promises such as "the company would look after her even after she ended her career as a player" are hard to refuse. Sigh.

Griner made it look easy in that game, 18 points in 21 minutes.

Up next for Japan are exhibition matches against Slovenia and Lithuania.

Japan destroyed Lithuania U20 103-57, then beat Lithuania WNT 88-80 today.

China WNT will be in Lithuania tomorrow as well (as well as Sweden) so we shall see who's better. Any streams possible?
