Thanks for the tip, but from what's reported in the Chinese media these days, so far there is still a long list of ~20 coaches, and they won't finalize a decision until late February or March (February=Chinese new years and everybody in China takes off for ~2 weeks). Now we know he's a candidate. CBA is indeed leaning towards a European coach.

I heard there are 3 main candidates that are a priority for the Chinese basketball federation and they are David Blatt, Panagiotis Giannakis & Neven Spahija

Pretty impressive list if true. What is your source? But success in Europe is not immediately applicable to China. IMO personality will be the most important.

China NT will revamp this year, probably no more Liu Wei, Wang Zhizhi etc. though they are still putting star-like numbers in CBA (#2 and #4 respectively for domestic players behind Yi Jianlian. Sad?). We have some young CBA talents who give people hope, but from what I've seen no "next big thing" except for Wang Zhelin who has been a little inconsistent. Defending the championship in Asia won't be easy, but the good news is it won't be difficult to make the World Cup next year - even in the unlikely case that China did not qualify I expect FIBA to hand China the wild card.

The goal is definitely not this year, I hope the bureaucrats can have a long-term plan for the guys for Rio de Janeiro '16. Or at least the coach.

My source isn't anything official. It's one of the Chinese members who used to previously post here in IBN... He posted this info. on my twitter account and asked my opinion about it.

Oh I see. In that tweet he also mentioned Ramūnas Butautas. Not sure what his source is.

Butautas was total failure with LT NT in 2007-2009. Sure we won bronze in 2007 Eurobasket, were 4th in Olympics, but basically thnx to players individual efforts, mostly Jasikevicius and Siskauskas were leading the team on court as PG and point forward respectivelly. In 2009 both were gone and we failed badly in Eurobasket, didn't even reach qtrfinals. He was probably worst coach to coach NT since 1992 when we cameback to international scene as independent nation.
From other 3 names - Blatt is surely the best option. Guy might not be the best clubs coach, but with Russian NT he did great

So apparently the list of candidates for the Chinese NT has been narrowed down to 6 names and the main runner ups for the position are Ilias Zouros, Brian Goorjian and Neven Spahija.

To think David Blatt was even considered. Shame that the latter turned down the offer. If I remember correctly, Goorjian was being considered back in early 2009 but Bob Donewald Jr. was named head coach.

                        Panagiotis Giannakis

These names were mentioned in the initial list but they rejected to coach the Chinese NT from what I heard.... Unless there are new developments that occured over this past week which i'm not aware of as I have been really busy with work and did not have the chance to check the latest updates.

I found this about Kemzura who was in China last week:

It seems Kemzura met with officials.

Really looking forward to seeing a front-court of Yi Jianlian and Wang Zhelin atleast in training camp. I heard Wang had been promoted to the senior squad full time as the latter is not listed in the U19 squad. So this means that Wang has commitments to address and the federation does not want him to get burned out with so much basketball activity.

In a side note, I will pick Li Xiaoxu over Li MuHao at this point if we gauge CBA performance and individual progression. Though Li MuHao and Wang Zhelin recently worked out in NIKE, Oregon for a couple of specialized training sessions. Li also worked out with Hakeem Olajuwon.
