I think nobody really studied how a poor kid from an African country, left for US, and played HS ball (or USNCAA). Do you think the parents of these kids have resources to finance their daily needs in the US? Maybe we can mimic that model?... On the other hand, I'm sure there are lots of Pinoy families in the US who are willing to shelter/sponsor these poor Pinoy athletes temporarily. Baka pwede yung ganon.

Pinoy HS Blue Chippers rarely, if not at all, go out of the country because these kids and their family become comfortable with all the "compensation" and adulation they get.

And also, these compensation trickle down from the blue-chipper up to:

1. Parents
2. Agents and handlers masquerading as guardians
3. Entourage (masseuse, tape guys, trainers, p/r staff, make-up artists, girlfriends)

so why go, if you and your people are sitting on a goldmine.


And also, lots of money is riding on the kid, directly or indirectly

1. Schools
2. Boosters
3. Sponsors
4. And in some cases, ABS-CBN


so you can just imagine why Jaja Santiago, if reports were true, turned down a scholarship offer from UCLA. She'll just be a tall volleyball player in campus vs the face of NU and PHL volleyball here.

Actually, I'm not talking about those kids like Kobe or Japeth who we know don't have any issues on the financial side. My point is, if the reason why Pinoy athletic kids can't go or even try US because they don't have the financial resources, to me, that's something that can be worked out. Some of these kids are probably not living or away from their families anyway. Why not try US where you can get a good education (on a scholarship ala Japeth, or you are that good), and play the sport you love? If everything else fails, you always have the PBA as a fallback.

The allusion to Japeth and Kobe were not on the financial aspect, but on their supposed "chance" of making it by virtue of their potential. Let's admit it, many people were high on them. That is why I said earlier it has to be a combination of physical attributes, talent and mentality to actually make it there. They unfortunately set the bar a bit high for our own good.

I get what you're saying. I think the best way to entice our prospects to trying their luck in the US is to assure them they'd be getting the same benefits they would by playing locally instead of them spending their own fortune, a sponsorship perhaps. It is a matter of being smart rather than not having the guts.

Economics made up half of the correct and practical decision in every endeavor. African athletes are living in a much reduced circumstances compared to Filipinos. Additionally, Philippines have a thriving basketball and volleyball industry as opposed to the sports sector in some African countries except football.

The Japeth and Kobe experiment was an eye opener to us. We realized that height and skillset does not guarantee a player's success to make it to the NBA, maybe previously when NBA isn't global. The World Cup exposure proves that we are have the talent and skills to compete to a higher level. So now, identifying and developing that talent is another thing.

So true. Being a basketball crazy nation is turning to be a "curse" to us. Our players are sitting in a gold mine, bring with it the celebrity treatments they're getting. Heck, even NBA doesn't even bother "help" us get one player to the NBA. They know, even without a pure pinoy, we will follow NBA no matter what, no marketing gimmicks needed, if you know what I mean...

Will Artino like kyle barone fits on what they want to play, tall can run finesse player who can shoot, great motor, pittman is like a prototype gilas/taiwan naturalization prospect, big guy who will be a inside presence..while florveus is the weakest prospect among the 3..

We really need to learn and hang tough with this kind of team. The pba and sbp will learn a lot from fighting through strong slav and african teams. You need to design a team specifically to beat very good aussie or serbian nt teams. The success of the present u19 team is crucial as it is the first kind that cannot be overpowered easily. This nt just needs an extra all-star big (kai and edu are natural stretch 5 and 4) and a truly deadly tall shooting sf to be an alpha wolf team in fiba asia. Add two nba-level players like blatche and jc for stability under pressure, and pinoys will have genuine world top ten chances.

Serbia will be having a friendly match against NZ this August , the results ahould provide us some preview of this Serbian team vs. a team from Asia.
This is not a comparison between Asian teams but an idea of where we are against these teams and how we can improve towards the right direction
