    SG/SF Fernando Neves (1.94, 1980) extended his contract with A.D. Ovarense. The veteran shooter had a very good 2011-12 season: 13.0 points, 2.6 rebounds.

    On a sadder note, only 11 (eleven) teams will take part in the V LPB (2012-2013):

    1. S.L. Benfica
    2. A.D. Ovarense
    3. C.A.B. Madeira
    4. S.C. Lusitânia
    5. F.C. Barreirense
    6. Vitória de Guimarães
    7. Académica de Coimbra
    8. Sampaense Basket
    9. B.C. Barcelos (?)
    10. Sport Algés e Dafundo
    11. Física de Torres Vedras

    Edit: It is quite likely that B.C. Barcelos will abolish its professional basketball section. In that case, we will be down to 10 teams.

      Top-prospect PG José Barbosa (PG, 1.72, 1990) extended his contract with A.D. Ovarense.

      According to Record, Nuno Manarte (PG, 1.84, 1975) will probably put an end to his long and triumphant basketball career.

      Best news of the day: LPB newcomer Sport Algés e Dafundo is considering signing Sérgio Ramos.

        Excellent signing

        João Balseiro (SG/SF, 1.92, 1987) will play for Académica de Coimbra. Last season, Balseiro was Sampaense’s second leading scorer with 15.5 points; he also grabbed 3.7 rebounds and had 2.32 steals per game.

            According to the site Basketpt (link below), PG Miguel Cardoso (1.82, 1993) signed with French PRO A team JSF Nanterre. Nice to see one of the victims of F.C. Porto’s self-annihilation being able to upgrade to a far more interesting league.

              It’s official: swingman Carlos Andrade (1.98, 1978) joins S.L. Benfica. Last season, playing for F.C. Porto, Andrade was arguably the league´s Portuguese MVP: 11.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.09 steals.

                A bit off-topic...

                All three former Portuguese league players have ended their Olympic tournament.

                SG Richard Oruche (Nigeria, Ginásio Figueirense 2010-11 and Académica de Coimbra 2011-12): 3.4 points, 1.2 assists. After Tonny Skinn’s injury, Oruche played some minutes out of position at point-guard.

                SG/SF Derrick Obasohan (Nigeria, C.F. Os Belenenses 2005-06): 10.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1 assist. Nigeria’s third leading scorer.

                F Radhouane Slimane (Tunisia, F.C. Barreirense 2005-06): 3.0 points, 2.0 rebounds. More was expected from this flamboyant player, one of my favorites.

                    Bosnia-Herzegovina ‒ Portugal (Sarajevo, August 8th)

                    So far, Portugal played 9 friendly games: 3 wins ‒ Israel, Bulgaria and Switzerland ‒ and 6 losses ‒ Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain (twice).

                    Our best player is, by far, João Gomes (SF, 2.01, 1985): athletic, excellent rebounder, good perimeter shooter, eye-catching.

                    Here´s the probable starting-five (stats are from the first 8 friendly matches):

                    PG Mário Fernandes (1.74, 1982): 10.0 points, 3.8 assists;
                    «SG» Fábio Lima (1.97, 1988): 4.7 points, 3.1 rebounds;
                    SF João Gomes: 16.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists;
                    «PF» Paulo Cunha (2.00, 1980): 6.9 points, 3.6 rebounds;
                    C Elvis Évora (2.05, 1978): 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1 steal.

                    Portugal has two good back-up point-guards: the very tall (1.98) Miguel Minhava: (8.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.25 steals) and the very young (1990) Tomás Barroso (6.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists).

                    Back-up center Cláudio Fonseca (4.9 points, 3.8 rebounds), is the only one that plays outside Portugal (in Plasencia ‒ LEB Plata, Spain).

                    As a team, we don´t score much, we defend quite well, but we have a very weak frontcourt: Elmedin Kikanovic and Mirza Teletovic will be unstoppable.

                          Where are they now?

                          Tracking some US players that spent last season with Portuguese teams:

                          Anthony Hill (F.C. Barreirense): Angers BC (Nationale 1, France) ‒ link below

                          Brian Mills (S.C. Lusitânia): Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan (Icelandic league)

                          Basketball site Sportando reports that Aquila Basket Trento (Legadue, Italy) is interested in Ted Scott (S.L. Benfica).

                            Sampaense Basket announced three new players:

                            PF Diogo Gonçalves (2.00, 1987), who played a couple of good games last season after the departure of Terceira Basket’s American players.

                            After playing in Luxemburg (BBC US Hiefenech), Hélder Carvalho (PF/C, 2.05, 1984) returns to Sampaense Basket.

                            Last but not least, the very promising Carlos Ferreirinho (SG/SF, 2.01, 1991), former S.L. Benfica player, also joins the team.
