    What else?

    Aparently Porto will extinguish basketball immediately and will not take part on next year's LPB.
    Rumours say that only last year's championship avoided this to happen earlier and facing the financial difficulties, the finals outcome and the loss of Andrade, Porto directors decided that they shouldn't keep competing if they didn't had good chances of bringing the title back to Porto.

    Portuguese basketball will suffer from this decision and the it's questionable now if Benfica should keep investing, since the Lisbon club was signing Andrade and trying to keep star point guard Ted Scott.

    Wow that's shocking news, didn't know that. I guess that goes to show how football swallows all the money. I mean, football is never short on money right?
    You know what, they can end the basketball section for all I care. Basketball in Portugal has been either stagnating or going backwards and the big clubs certainly gave a helping hand to it. Maybe this will mark a shift in the right direction. And I'm tired of people calling these "amateur sports sections". So amateur that they face financial problems huh?
    Angolan market says "hi!".

    Unhappy Too sad to comment

    According to «A Bola» (newspaper), F.C. Porto will terminate his professional basketball section. Here is the link (in Portuguese):

    The same news in another newspaper site (O Jogo):

    FPB's president Mário Saldanha confirmed it in a radio station, TSF. http://www.tsf.pt/PaginaInicial/Desp...errer=FooterOJ

    Guess that makes it official.

    The only thing that keeps basketball on TV now is Benfica, so I can't really share Rikhardur's optimism. Less investment from Benfica now could level the league again and give more opportunities to young national players but the level will very low and I can't see it rising anytime soon.

    Sporting CP's basketball, third with more portuguese championships won (with 8, against Porto with 11 and Benfica with 23), is back, but will start in the lower divisions and, looking at a similar Sporting project for roller hockey, it will take a while until it reaches the top.

    FC Porto didn't confirmed it yet, and they sure like to play this kind of games, so probably there's still hope that FC Porto finds a new way of financing the basketball team, probably investing less money.
    It has been said that before today's happenings, Porto had already agreed terms with Sean Ogirri, a PG/SG that pretty much won the finals by himself two years ago, with more than 20 points in game 5.

    Well, according to this, the section will either make integral part of the club or be terminated. Team won't play next season, that seems clear for now.

    Default Latest news

    SG/SF PAULO CUNHA (2.00, 1980) will play one more season for Vitória Guimarães. Last season stats: 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.93 steals.

    F.C. Barreirense was able to maintain his status has a L.P.B. team.

    The Portuguese Basketball Federation is accepting applications for the spot left by F.C. Porto. Candidates: Terceira Basket? Sporting C.P. ? (just wishful thinking)

    According to this site (http://www.ressalto.net/index.php/lp...#axzz20joAIHRn), Angolan PG Edson Ferreira (1.83, 1986) will play for C.R.D. Libolo. Last season, while with Ginásio Figueirense (12th in the LPB), he scored 6.4 points and dished out 4.4 assists.

    SG/SF Fernando Neves (1.94, 1980) extended his contract with A.D. Ovarense. The veteran shooter had a very good 2011-12 season: 13.0 points, 2.6 rebounds.

    On a sadder note, only 11 (eleven) teams will take part in the V LPB (2012-2013):

    1. S.L. Benfica
    2. A.D. Ovarense
    3. C.A.B. Madeira
    4. S.C. Lusitânia
    5. F.C. Barreirense
    6. Vitória de Guimarães
    7. Académica de Coimbra
    8. Sampaense Basket
    9. B.C. Barcelos (?)
    10. Sport Algés e Dafundo
    11. Física de Torres Vedras

    Edit: It is quite likely that B.C. Barcelos will abolish its professional basketball section. In that case, we will be down to 10 teams.

    Top-prospect PG José Barbosa (PG, 1.72, 1990) extended his contract with A.D. Ovarense.

    According to Record, Nuno Manarte (PG, 1.84, 1975) will probably put an end to his long and triumphant basketball career.

    Best news of the day: LPB newcomer Sport Algés e Dafundo is considering signing Sérgio Ramos.

    Default Excellent signing

    João Balseiro (SG/SF, 1.92, 1987) will play for Académica de Coimbra. Last season, Balseiro was Sampaense’s second leading scorer with 15.5 points; he also grabbed 3.7 rebounds and had 2.32 steals per game.

    According to the site Basketpt (link below), PG Miguel Cardoso (1.82, 1993) signed with French PRO A team JSF Nanterre. Nice to see one of the victims of F.C. Porto’s self-annihilation being able to upgrade to a far more interesting league.

    It’s official: swingman Carlos Andrade (1.98, 1978) joins S.L. Benfica. Last season, playing for F.C. Porto, Andrade was arguably the league´s Portuguese MVP: 11.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.09 steals.

    Default A bit off-topic...

    All three former Portuguese league players have ended their Olympic tournament.

    SG Richard Oruche (Nigeria, Ginásio Figueirense 2010-11 and Académica de Coimbra 2011-12): 3.4 points, 1.2 assists. After Tonny Skinn’s injury, Oruche played some minutes out of position at point-guard.

    SG/SF Derrick Obasohan (Nigeria, C.F. Os Belenenses 2005-06): 10.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1 assist. Nigeria’s third leading scorer.

    F Radhouane Slimane (Tunisia, F.C. Barreirense 2005-06): 3.0 points, 2.0 rebounds. More was expected from this flamboyant player, one of my favorites.

    Bosnia-Herzegovina ‒ Portugal (Sarajevo, August 8th)

    So far, Portugal played 9 friendly games: 3 wins ‒ Israel, Bulgaria and Switzerland ‒ and 6 losses ‒ Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain (twice).

    Our best player is, by far, João Gomes (SF, 2.01, 1985): athletic, excellent rebounder, good perimeter shooter, eye-catching.

    Here´s the probable starting-five (stats are from the first 8 friendly matches):

    PG Mário Fernandes (1.74, 1982): 10.0 points, 3.8 assists;
    «SG» Fábio Lima (1.97, 1988): 4.7 points, 3.1 rebounds;
    SF João Gomes: 16.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists;
    «PF» Paulo Cunha (2.00, 1980): 6.9 points, 3.6 rebounds;
    C Elvis Évora (2.05, 1978): 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1 steal.

    Portugal has two good back-up point-guards: the very tall (1.98) Miguel Minhava: (8.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.25 steals) and the very young (1990) Tomás Barroso (6.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists).

    Back-up center Cláudio Fonseca (4.9 points, 3.8 rebounds), is the only one that plays outside Portugal (in Plasencia ‒ LEB Plata, Spain).

    As a team, we don´t score much, we defend quite well, but we have a very weak frontcourt: Elmedin Kikanovic and Mirza Teletovic will be unstoppable.

    For more information please visit the «Portugal National Team» thread.
