the fiba worlds veteran teams are playing at a different level of confidence.

when they face us, there's no intimidation. why would they be afraid of us when they have already played against the world league teams and have been thru worse?

this was the same feeling we had after the smart all-stars game. that first two games in the jones cup, we were so confident of our abilities and our system.

gradually we were broken down physicaly and mentally. it seems we are back post ginebra semis.

more than perfecting the system, we need our confidence back.

      The team is so small!...

We just saw the futility of having so many guards(small) that couldn't make ( consistently) an outside shot when the team needed it!...

Korea, Japan, and Taiwan got guards that could bury their outside shot consistently...

Douhit looks scared (the truth, he looks petrified) of Haddadi!...

In fact when we play teams with players that stands 6'8" and above except for the first game against Iran, and Taiwan, UAE should not be counted here...

Douhit games went south all the time!...

We don't effectively know how to double team...

Barocca doesn't know how to call a play...

After Casio, the team needed to have a new point guard!...

I wish the team lots of luck!...

But their chances of winning the Fiba Championship is not looking so good
      right now!...

      They just got exposed...

                  Asia's Basketball Evolution!!!

Even if the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team missed out on winning the 2011 Jones Cup in Taipei after it lost to Iran Saturday night, former national coach Tim Cone thinks that the Philippine squad has a fighting chance to make it to the Olympics.

“The SMART-Gilas program is already proven and it works,” he said despite the semifinal loss. “This will be the best team we have ever sent.”

Cone’s words carry much weight, as he was the last person to coach the Philippine team to a Jones Cup title in 1998.

That same year, he led the Philippine Centennial Team, bannered by Alvin Patrimonio, Allan Caidic, Vergel Meneses, Jojo Lastimosa and Johnny Abarrientos among others, to a bronze medal finish in the Bangkok Asian Games. It was the last medal ever won by the Philippines in a high-level Asian men’s basketball competition.

Cone, who led Alaska to the PBA’s last Grand Slam in 1996, pointed to the development of countries from the Middle East as the biggest reason why the Philippines has been shut out of the podium in basketball.

“No doubt, the competition today is better, especially with the Middle Eastern teams,” he said. “We always hammered Iran and Jordan back then, but they have made great strides with better coaching.”

Moments after the final buzzer sounded, Cone posted encouraging words for the SMART-Gilas squad on his Twitter account.

“Despite tonight’s loss, Gilas proved with its opening day win over Iran it can put a good game together and it can handle Iran,” wrote Cone, referring to the Filipinos’ 73-59 upset victory over the two-time reigning FIBA-Asia champions in their opening game.

“That confidence is going to be crucial when Gilas gets to FIBA-Asia. They have set themselves up well.”

But he warned that the road to an Olympic slot is still going to be tough.

“We haven’t seen China,” he said. “They are still the team to beat, even before Iran, Jordan and Korea. With only one berth available, it is going to be tough.”

hehe and why you and management didnt let Joe Devance play for gilas? if you only grant his wish to play for the country then joe devance will still be on your team. we might see him play for gilas from fiba asiad club championship, smart all star weekend and jones cup.

                        Just don't bite this flamers.

It's either they hate Pinas that much or they just don't know how to play basketball.

I stop reading this forums when that monkey kid is flaming almost everyone here. It's like the extension of PEX.

Critcism is good but it is totally different from hating. Some of the flamers are writing HATRED not CRITICSM to our VERY OWN National Team.

Sen. Allan Peter Cayetano in attendance. Not too enthusiastic in cheering though.

No Tseng Wen Ting for Taiwan. No Chris Lutz for Smart Gilas. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

9pt lead by SG at half-time. Douthit making up for his lackluster game last night.

Wow 3rd quarter officiating was BEYOND HORRIBLE. 5 or 6 straight calls in favor of CT including a no-call on an obvious elbow to Lassiter's face.

Smart Gilas hitting their shots to offset the biased officiating.

Best game from Lassiter and Hontiveros thus far. CT not hitting their shots making it very hard for the refs to keep the game close.

Asi can no longer run but his heart is still there; diving for those loose balls with all his might.

This game would have been a blow-out early if not for those refs.

Asi energized in the 4th and the crowd liking it. Chants of Asi Asi Asi can be heard in the coverage. Cayetano also appreciative of Asi's efforts.
