NBL Canada Offers Opportunity for Locked out NBA Players
July 5, 2011 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)

(TORONTO, ON) The president of the National Basketball League of Canada would like to invite locked out NBA players to come to Canada and continue professional play, should the NBA season not start as many are predicting.
"What a great opportunity for NBA players," says Andre Levingston. "NBL Canada can provide them with highly competitive play in professional arenas with great fan bases, while still being relatively close to home."

Two of the founding NBL Canada teams sport head coaches with NBA experience. Mike Evans, the head coach of the Halifax Rainmen was formerly the head coach of the Denver Nuggets, and has also served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors. The Saint John Mill Rats head coach Jaren Jackson won an NBA World Championship as a key contributor on the 1999 San Antonio Spurs.

"I am confident that NBL Canada can give NBA players an environment that will help keep their skills sharp and maintain their physical conditioning until the NBA resumes play," stated Coach Evans.

Three of the NBL Canada teams suited up former NBA players last season in a prior league.

The Saint John Mill Rats featured 6'11 former Toronto Raptor centre, Toree Morris, while the Quebec Kebs had former Portland Trailblazer, Erick Barkley, running the point. The Halifax Rainmen dressed another former Trailblazer, 6'7 sniper shooting guard, Desmond Ferguson, as well as former Houston Rocket and Utah Jazz forward, Kirk Snyder.

It was an unprecedented NBA Draft for Canadian players this year as two Toronto natives were taken as first round picks. 6'9 forward Tristan Thompson was selected #4 in the draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and his 6'2 point guard teammate, Cory Joseph, was taken #29 by the San Antonio Spurs.

NBL Canada held their first league owners meeting this past week in Toronto and is currently working towards releasing the 2011-12 season schedule. The league is set to tip off in November 2011 with a 36 game regular season schedule ending in March.

Sounds like a press release the ABA would put out.

It's not that low. Right now that's probably the average budget in many second level european leagues.

I heard that the salary in the NBL Canada is comparable to that of D-league players.

                That would actually be:
                1. Oshawa, ON
                2. Prince Edward Island
                3. London, ON
                4. Moncton, NB
                5. Saint John Mill Rats, NB
                6. Halifax Rainmen, NS
                7. Quebec Kebs, QB

Plot thickens in NBL Canada's Maritime story.

Looks like Moncton is a virtual lock and they're still working out the details in PEI.

I just know that they're working on tv deals, but I don't know with whom. The Score, TSN and Rogers Sportsnet would be great options for them.

Thanks. I will look into this further. Right now, I do hope that some of the Canadian Channels I have on my satellite TV will show some NBL Games. One channel shows Canadian sports like Hockey and Football.

Halifax, Saint John, Quebec release protected lists

                          By BRIAN FREEMAN Sports Reporter
                          Sun, Jul 31 - 4:54 AM
The three teams that can shield players from their new partners in the National Basketball League of Canada have submitted their protected lists to the league office.

The Halifax Rainmen, Saint John Mill Rats and Quebec Kebs — the NBL’s founding franchises — are permitted to protect five players each from their 2010-11 season in the Premier Basketball League, keeping them off limits to the four other clubs in an Aug. 21 draft and for several weeks afterward.

Rainmen owner Andre Levingston, the NBL’s interim president, and Mill Rats president and general manager Ian McCarthy, its interim chief operating officer, confirmed Saturday night the 15 players whose teams will have exclusive negotiating rights with them until Oct. 1.

The Kebs will protect forward Quinnel Brown, the 2010-11 PBL MVP, along with guard Royce Parron and three former Rainmen: centre Aaron Spears, guard Tommy Mitchell and forward Cordell Jeanty.

The Mill Rats’ list of untouchables consists of guards Anthony Anderson, Dwuan Rice and Marc Egerson, and forwards Steve DeLuca and Ross Demasi.

The Rainmen are protecting guards Taliek Brown and Trayvon Lathan, forwards Josh Dollard and Eric Crookshank, and centre DeAndre Thomas.

The first round of the inaugural NBL draft is limited to free agent players, while the second and third rounds are for Canadian players only. Each NBL team has to carry at least two Canadians on its 10- to 12-man roster.

The Rainmen have the sixth selection in the draft. Oshawa will choose first, followed by the P.E.I. franchise, London and Moncton. The Mill Rats pick fifth and the Kebs seventh.

Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada and to have an avenue like the NBL, it will greatly help to showcase the burgeoning talent Canada has and give Canadian players the opportunity to play the sport they love in front of their friends and family.

The growth of basketball in the last 10-15 years has been tremendous and shows we have just as much talent in this country as anywhere else in the world. All we need is the effort to harness this talent and I know the NBL will be the league to get that job done.

Though very successful in both endeavours, this is not where his heart truly lies.

The possibilities are endless and a professional league like the NBL will keep home grown talent right here where they belong. The opportunities to develop young men athletically and professionally through the creation of jobs and unique skill sets will only enhance the landscape of the sport here in Canada.
