Former NBA coach Fratello to lead Ukraine at Euros

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -- Former NBA coach Mike Fratello has agreed to coach Ukraine's national team at the European Championship this year.

The Ukrainian Basketball Federation says it has a verbal agreement with the former Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies coach. A contract will be signed in the next few days.

The European Championship is scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 18 in Lithuania.

The 64-year-old Fratello, who has been working as an NBA television analyst for Turner Sports, is expected to take charge in July.

Ukraine is in group D with Slovenia, Russia, Belgium, Bulgaria and Georgia.

Great coach with long tenureship in the NBA (coached in the NBA for 17 seasons). Hope he can help Ukraine get a good results as their group is way easier than the rest...

Ukraine has some descent big men on their roster with Fesenko, Pecherov and Lishchuk

They are short on guards however and Fratello won't help them much imho. I mean, the guy has coached - when - 23 years ago for the last time? It's just his old connection with Volkov.
Their big men are decent however. They need to get a good American PG, like the Georgians did.

Damn, it's like half of the weaker teams have American PGs now. I don't like this trend at all, they should get some pride and let their countrymen play.

I agree but it would be a lost generation for them. They have quality big men but absolutely no guards.

                  Ukraine wants Eurobasket

Ukraine to apply to host Eurobasket 2015

On topic, Fratello is known as an uptempo coach. I'm not sure how his coaching philosophy has changed over the years. Fratello spent most of his time years back as a commentator on TNT.

Oh, no one wrote it here, so I'm writing it:

National team of Ukraine easily beat team which is gathered by "East players" agency (very weak team...)

                      92:67 (25:16, 23:15, 20:16, 24:20)

Fesenko and Lischuk didn't play due to the injury.

(I didn't edit names to original, you see it as it was written in Lithuanian media)

Ukraine: Sergejus Gladyras 21, Aleksejus Pečerovas 16 (8 atk. kam.), Slava Kvavtsovas 11, Agafonovas Saltovetsas 9 (9 atk. kam.), Dalielis Kozlovas 9 (8 atk. kam.), SaÅ¡a Kolčenka 8, Denisas LukaÅ¡ovas 6, Glebovas Onufrievas 5, Maksimas Pustozvonovas 4, Styvas Burttas 3.

„East Players“: Jonas Elvikis 17, Ridas Pulkauninkas 13, Artūras Valeika 12 (11 atk. kam.), Eigirdas Žukauskas 11, Mustafa Enday 9 (6 atk. kam., 7 kld.), Gytis PakalniÅ¡kis 3, Klemensas Patiejūnas 2. (almost all players are Lithuanians)

Gladyr out of Eurobasket due meniscus injury. Drozdov seems like finally won't join the squad, so Ukraine's chances getting waaay lower...
