if my memory serves me right, the last time we joined that competition was way back 2006. i think it was sponsored by Accel - Philippines. we didn't send a collegiate nor a club team but a team composed of the best collegiate players available - Carolino, Balce, Macatangay, Laborte etc were all part of that team.

2006 Club Championship was probably the last international indoor volleyball tournament that our girls participated in.

the Women's team currently ranked 111th in the world rankings with Zero Points(last place, tied with 17 countries)

but the newly elected PVF president Gener Dungo, has big big plans for Philippine Volleyball. a commercial league for the girls, hiring Fil-Ams, and their paying their debts!

so keep the hope alive for Philippine Volleyball!

no updates so far. the last news about the women's national team was the try-outs held last August 2010. after that, wala na akong narinig.

regarding the Fil-Ams, not sure yet, last year, Dungo went to the United States to look for players. no news after that.

-- but I'm not a big fan of that idea. our local Volleybelles is already as popular as their college basketball counterparts. they have a huge fanbase, and this might be the only sport that your younger sister will watch even it doesn't have a Younghusband or a Chris Tiu. partida na, we don't have a pro-leauge yet!. Philippine Volleyball despite being it's status, i think, as being the 2nd most played team sport in the country, is just starting to get noticed as a top spectator sport. and we must not take away the opportunity for our player who already earned respect and popularity while playing in UAAP/NCAA to represent the National Team. unlike the Football or Rugby team, we have enough local players to start with. we don't need to rush things out, no need for immediate success, train them, give them exposure, the girls deserve it.

UST Tigresses forge Game 3 in UAAP Football Finals

The University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, dejected from the blindside board decision to make the UAAP Women’s Football Finals a best-of-three series, and fatigued no end by the hard-charging Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws team, came away with a riveting 1-nil win at the Ateneo football field to forge a game three.


Jowe-Ann Barruga headed in a corner shot in the 15th minute that slipped right through FEU keeper Libra Dawne Villarante’s hands for the match’s only score.


But the joy was short lived as UST was unable to sustain the momentum of an early goal while FEU got stronger as they game went on. They threw an extra attacker for a 3-5-2 formation that forced UST to cough up the ball repeatedly in the backline and the midfield. In the first 20 minutes of the second half, only twice did the ball reach the final third for the Tigresses and in one of them, UST did not even have proper control of the ball.


The Lady Tamaraws’ defense prevented UST striker Marianne Narciso from receiving a through ball that the she could only threw her hands up in dismay. Compounding the woes of the Tigresses was Nikki Regaldo being ejected from the game on account of two yellow cards following a dangerous kick and a foul.


Not soon after, FEU’s Maria Kristina Sabanal had an opportunity to equalize when a handball was called on a UST defender, but the Lady Tamaraw’s shot hit the post and ricocheted out.


The man-advantage of FEU was later negated when Lady Tamaraws forward Jayneth Mercado was sent off after two yellow cards after she deliberately fell on top of a UST defender. It was a sorry end for Mercado’s collegiate career because she will be suspended for the next match and unable to help her teammates in their quest for a football crown.


“After the announcement of the best-of-three finals, parang nawalan ng loob yun mga bata,” explained Tigresses coach Rozano Estrabon. “Pero sabi ng mga school officials na laban lang.” No one embodied that “fight” attitude more than goalkeeper Zipporah Luna who was easily the Woman of the Match after she stopped more than a dozen FEU shots.


The final match will be played this Sunday at the Ateneo de Manila University at 2pm

V-League: Perpetual downs CSB to clinch q'finals spot in Group B

University of Perpetual Help gained the first quarterfinals slot in Group B by downing College of St. Benilde, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 on Thursday in the Shakey's V-League Season 8 first conference at The Arena in San Juan City.

It was the Lady Altas' third straight win to remain on top of Group B.

Sandra De los Santos, April Anne Sartin and Honey Royse Tubino combined for 10 hits in Perpetual's 12-1 blast in the third set that turned an 8-12 deficit to a 20-13 advantage.

But the Lady Blazers, behind Giza Yumang's two kills, had a four-point cluster to move within three points at 20-17.

That proved to be CSB's last stand, as Perpetual forced its opponent into committing two crucial turnovers and a service error by Cindy Optana.

Sartin clinched the win for the Lady Altas with a backline hit.

"Medyo maganda na yung laro kasi naka-adjust na kami, unlike dun sa last game namin against Adamson, hindi pa kami nakapag-adjust sa pagkawala ni (Jane) Manzano," said Perpetual coach Mike Rafael, who lost their guest player after Manzano joined her mother team, La Salle-Dasmariñas, in the PRISAA National Games in Zamboanga City.

"At saka maganda rin ang nilaro ng iba kong players lalo na yung bago naming setter, pati si Tubino," added Rafael, who was all praises for setter Arriane Argarin.

The loss pushed the Lady Blazers on the brink of elimination as they suffered their third straight defeat.

Meanwhile, Cebu's Southwestern University joined Perpetual in the next round even though their game against Group A leader Ateneo was still ongoing.

The Lady Cobras gained their third win after league officials forfeited the April 5 win of Lyceum, the Lady Pirates' lone win, against SWU.

That win was forfeited after coach Emil Lontoc fielded Carla Benedicto, who was later found out ineligible to play for the Lady Pirates since she still has to complete her residency in the V-League.

Benedicto also did not see action in the last WNCAA season, making her ineligible to play based on league rules that each team can have three guest players provided that all three are enrolled and are studying in any school in the country.

The Lady Pirates already had two guest players, Dahlia Cruz and MVP Mary Jane Balse, both of whom graduated this year.

With the forfeiture, Lyceum dropped to 0-2 and must win their last two games, against San Sebastian and Far Eastern U, if they want to earn a semis berth. - JVP, GMA News

AFTER a long absence, the Philippines will compete in the 12th Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship slated June 19-25 in Vinh Phuc, Vietnam.

The winner of the week-long tournament sanctioned by the Asian Volleyball Confederation represents the region in the FIVB World Women’s Club Volleyball Championships slated later this year.

Comprising Team Philippines are Mayette Carolino, Michelle Carolino, Rachel Daquis, Tina Salak, Cherry Macatangay, Dahlia Cruz, Suzanne Roces, Mary Jean Balse, Pau Soriano, Aiza Maizo, Zharmaine Velez and Nica Guliman.

Sammy Acaylar is the head coach, while Ron Dulay and Norman Miguel serve as assistant mentor and trainor, respectively.

Philippine Volleyball Federation president Gener Dungo is the team manager and head of delegation.

The Philippines is bracketed in Group A along with host Vietnam, Japan and Iran.

Reigning two-time champion Thailand, represented by Federbrau, leads Group B along with Kazahkstan, China and Indonesia.

This marks the first time the country is fielding a team in the annual club championships since 2006, where the Accel-sponsored Philippine squad placed sixth in the event held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
