The FIBA rankings isn't really a good representation of the actual strength of the teams. Take my country for example, a lot of countries that we can easily beat are ahead of us in the rankings."These young guys are playing checkers. I'm out there playing chess." - Kobe Bryant

-They will play in the pre-olympics next summer..
>>> 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament (held between 2 July & 8 July)
Participating teams: Lithuania, Greece, Russia, Macedonia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Angola, Nigeria, New Zealand, In addition to 2nd Asia & S.Korea.
For Lebanon to remain 23rd/24th in FIBA’s ranking these teams should not qualify to the Olympic (London 2012) Macedonia, Dominican Republic, S.Korea & Jordan. Venezuela currently has 49pts & we have a chance to surpass them in the near future (Asia 2013, WC 2014) so it’s better if they didn’t qualify same goes for Nigeria.
==========================
Ranking DETAILS:
*Canada
- Canada were ranked (23) with (48.2) pts in 2010.
## 2011 Ranking = 2010 Ranking +FibaAmeria 2011 pts – FibaAmerica 2003 pts ##
- Fiba America 2003 Ranking: 4th
15 pts x 0.8 = - 12pts
- Fiba America 2011 Ranking: 6th
13 pts x 0.8 = 10.4pts
= 48.2 +10.4 -12 = 46.6pts
---------------
* Dominican Republic
- Dominican Republic were ranked (30) with (30.4) pts in 2010.
## 2011 Ranking = 2010 Ranking +FibaAmeria 2011 pts – FibaAmerica 2003 pts ##
- Fiba America 2003 Ranking: 8th
11 pts x 0.8 = - 8.8pts
- Fiba America 2011 Ranking: 3rd
30pts x 0.8 = 24pts
= 30.4 +24 -8.8 = 45.6pts
---------------
* Venezuela
- Venezuela were ranked (22) with (49) pts in 2010.
Venezuela were ranked 5th in Fiba America 2003 & 2011, so they will stay with 49pts.
---------------
* Tunisia
- Tunisia were ranked (37) with (18.4) pts in 2010.
## 2011 Ranking = 2010 Ranking +FibaAfrica 2011 pts – FibaAfrica 2003 pts ##
- Fiba America 2003 Ranking: 6th
13pts x 0.2 = - 2.6pts
- Fiba America 2011 Ranking: 1st
50 pts x 0.2 = 10pts
= 18.4 +10 -2.6 = 25.8pts
But Tunisia will get @least (7x5)=35pts after Olympic games 2012 in London even if they got last place (12th) they will have more than (25.8+35)=60.8 pts > Lebanon, so they will surpass us.
---------------
* Nigeria
- Nigeria ranked (21) with 69.7 pts in 2011 FIBA Ranking will loss Just 2pts & end 2011 with 67.7 pts.

- FibaEurope 2003 Ranking: 7th
12pts x 1 = - 12pts
- FibaEurope 2011 Ranking: 13th
6 pts x 1 = 6pts
= 36 +6 -12 = 30pts.
---------------
* Italy
- Italy were ranked (7) with (300) pts in 2010.
## 2011 Ranking = 2010 Ranking +FibaEurope 2011 pts – FibaEurope2003 pts ##

30pts x 1 = - 30pts
- FibaEurope 2011 Ranking: 17th
2 pts x 1 = 2pts
= 300 +2 -30 = 272pts.
After the Olympic Games 2012, Italy will lose (40x5) = 200pts
Reason: They won the silver medal in 2004 but didn’t qualify in 2012.
Total(in 2012): 72pts
---------------
* Macedonia

That is 179 points for Brazil. So, why do we have 184 points in the FIBA rankings? Some could say my mistake?

I've ranked all teams who have played in official tournaments since 2000 using around 4,500 match results. The previous poster's perception about Finland being ranked below Rwanda, for example, shows that FIBA's ranking does not seem to be very good at showing current strength.
I have 210 teams ranked rather than 84 (and 164 women's teams instead of 72).
If it's current strength you are looking for, I'd say mine was probably a better indicator. But FIBA's, of course, is the one that counts.Fixtures, results and rankings for 64 international team sports all in one place, updated daily - www.theroonba.com

Edit: OK I see you have a system and I understand this is "current" and not cumulative (making the results more understandable) but I was wondering what games did you use to arrive at this ranking? Did you include friendlies? Because it's not clear from your explanation. For example, how did Guam get so many points? I cannot agree with Guam being 29 places before India, for example. But maybe you know something I don't. Only competition I remember Guam being in in recent years was 2009 East Asian Games when Hong Kong destroyed them by 20+ points.Last edited by sinobball; 09-28-2011, 12:29 AM.aim low, score high

Im just messing, I think its a good ranking, though Im surprised to see Argentina 5th, probably got their ranking affected for all the times they lost with the B team.
If they had played all tournaments with their full squad, no doubt Argentina would have been top 2 in these rankings.
Edit: Now that I actually read sinobball's post and checked the rankings again, Im also wondering why Macedonia is tenth when they where non-existant the past decade. If the tournament put them in the tenth spot, I would imagine that the Dominican Republic should be above Puerto Rico, and China above Iran.Originally posted by J-Martthe land of the free and the home of the brave is the greatest joke I've ever heard. Guam participates regularly in the Pacific Games. The ELO-type rating systems have their limitations, but anything is more sensible than FIBA's method.
The big problem with doing national team ratings is that teams often play without their full roster, even at major tournaments, so you either end up with ratings that reflect previous results but not necessarily the "true strength" of teams, or you start making arbitrary decisions about which results to exclude.
I gotta say, my rankings from a few years ago further up the thread, I nailed it with Macedonia at #17 even in the pre-McCalebb eraLast edited by JGX; 09-28-2011, 05:46 AM.Originally posted by FedfanMost ppl get childish when they lose.Originally posted by GuTOrefs in games of Spain walks with literally poop in his pants afraid of the Spanish players

and with the thing with China being ranked low (I don't think it is, I thinnk that's where they should go) it also says in the explanation of teh ranking that the quality of the team to play against matter, CHina plays in Asia, macedonia in Europe. so losing against Spain by 1 actually gives you points while beating Jordan by 5 takes points from you becuase of the "bad win" "good lost" situation.Last edited by Ciscorlie Horford; 09-28-2011, 01:02 PM.ABUSADOR !!!, ABUSADOR !!!, ABUSADOR !!!, ABUSADOR !!!, ABUSADOR !!!

The ELO part of the rankings is one half of the total ranking figure.
The other half is the current form (results from last 10 matches only).
Like JGX says - teams don't always bring their full teams. But I've taken the stance that if it's a national team tournament, teams should bring their full team. The minute a ranking system says "we can't include this match because Team X brought their B team", then teams will want their matches taken out of the rankings every time they get a bad result, using the excuse that it wasn't their "full A team".
The ELO system itself does have a few flaws - the main one being that it is not accurate for teams who lose all the time (but not by many points). For example, let's imagine India lost only 70-69 to China. With the ELO ranking, China would gain points, and India would lose points. This just doesn't make sense. The end result is that the gap between China and India has got larger, but in reality, a result like this shows that the gap is smaller. So, with my system, I've modified the ELO rating to take this into account.
It's not perfect - no ranking system can be - but it's an attempt at doing something different.
About Macedonia being 10th - it's not just about where they finished in the tournament - it's about an average of all their recent results.
China finished ahead of Iran in the Asian Championship, but apart from Iran's defeat to Jordan, Iran had better results (For example, Iran beat Lebanon by 31 points, China beat them by 20, with home advantage - Iran beat South Korea by 17, China beat them by only 13).
Also, Dominican Republic finished ahead of Puerto Rico at the FIBA Americas Championship, but that was due to one game where they defeated Puerto Rico. In the previous game, Puerto Rico beat Dominican Republic in group play and in general, performed better than DR throughout the tournament.Last edited by mcruic; 09-28-2011, 02:28 PM.Fixtures, results and rankings for 64 international team sports all in one place, updated daily - www.theroonba.com
