  • USA Women's national team

Watch-out the US Women's Basketball team is out to demolish its opponents in the forthcoming World Basketball Championship at the Czech Republic in September. The US basketball team made up of some of the top women basketball players in American recently defeated the WNBA All-Stars during their tune-up game 99-72. Chicago Sky starting center Sylvia Fowles lead the way for the US basketball team scoring 23 points in the game 13 of whom in the third quarter.

Fowles a product of the University of Connecticut in the NCAA basketball shot 9-for-11 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds, earning the MVP award in a game that had six former or current Huskies players on a U.S. team led by Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma and played about 30 miles south of the school's campus. The rising WNBA center revealed she is very happy with their victory and hopeful that they can continue their winning momentum at the World Basketball championship. Aside from Fowles, Candice Dupree and Swin Cash had 13 points apiece, UConn senior Maya Moore 12 and Angel McCoughtry 11 for the U.S.

Meanwhile, Katie Douglas had 15 points, Penny Taylor 12 and Sophia Young 10 for the All-Stars.
In the game Fowles was very determined to lead the US to victory as he dominated the first 6½ minutes of the second half, shooting 5-for-6 from the field, 3-for-4 from the free throw line and grabbing five rebounds. The Chicago Sky center converted a layup with 3:38 to go in the third to make it 68-37, the U.S.'s biggest of the game. She finished 6 for 13 from the field taking the most shots on her team and also had eight rebounds in 22 minutes.

She also drew some of the loudest cheers from the crowd. The exhibition game is part of a four-day training camp for the U.S., in preparation for the world championships. It is the second that the exhibition matches had been undertaken; the first one was in 2004 at the start of the league's month-long Olympic break. The U.S. also won that game, 74-58, at Radio City Music Hall in New York. After the WNBA All-Stars, the US team is also expected to play against Taylor and the Australian national team. The WNBA games are now in full swing so make it a habit to watch the games live by getting cheap WNBA tickets.

They actually lost to an incomplete Australian squad during WNBA All-Star break. The same Aussie squad that dropped 3 games to China prior to the American trip.

..in a closed-door scrimmage where the US was also missing some starters from the all-star game and spread the playing time around liberally...don't think it means anything.

I think this will be the last World Championship Tour for Sue Bird but she did express the desire to play for Team USA in the 2012 London Olympics as her swan parade.

            Thanks for the memories Sue!

Also Spain 87 Australia 74. Before we start to worry about Australia, note that Lauren Jackson was busy with the WNBA finals. As were Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Angel McCoughtry, and Sancho Lyttle.

Jayne Appel a veteran? She's fresh from NCAA and played just a few games in the WNBA!
It's a pity that USA Basketball didn't find a place to Crystal Langhorne, an all-star this year with the Mystics.

Concerning the Opals, besides Lauren Jackson neither Penny Taylor nor Abby Bishop played in Hartford.

Is it true what I read in the Fiba 2010 World page, that Epiphanny Prince could play for Russia?

Just a correction on J. Appel: she played 28 games in the WNBA but only 10.9MPG.

Also Yelena B. (Belarus) and Iziano Castro-Marques (Brazil) play for the Dream based on the little I watched.
