FRA - Cholet leading the way in France

PARIS (LNB) - Defending championship Cholet are alone at the top of the standings in France following an 81-65 victory over Vichy.

Erman Kunter's side got 20 points, six assists and nine rebounds from Samuel Mejia, a player that could feature for the Dominican Republic at this summer's FIBA Americas Championship.

Cholet started the game like a house on fire, outscoring the visitors 25-10 in the first 10 minutes but Vichy stormed back and only trailed 35-31 at half-time.

But the hosts pulled away in the second half for victory.

Antywane Robinson, who had 15 points and seven rebounds for Cholet, said: "It was not easy.

"We had to fight to win, but it is positive before tackling the next games that will be important for the end of the season."

Roanne are a point adrift in second place after crashing to an 84-68 defeat at Paris-Levallois.

Chalon/Saône are third but also just a point adrift of Cholet after thrashing Le Mans, 91-69.

    Other results: Limoges 76 Poitiers 85, Nancy 77 Lyon-Villeurbanne 91, Strasbourg 76 Pau-Lacq-Orthez 65, Gravelines-Dunkerque 57 Orleans 55
    Hyrese-Toulon 77 Le Havre 56.

FRA - Pops explodes for 27 on winning debut for ASVEL

LYON (LNB) - Great Britain international Pops Mensah-Bonsu made a huge splash on his French league debut with 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead ASVEL to an 89-77 win over defending champions league leaders Cholet.

Mensah-Bonsu began the season in the NBA with the New Orleans Hornets but has returned to Europe in search of playing time and he got plenty of it on his bow in France, logging 29 minutes.

The 27-year-old should be in the British squad that plays at the EuroBasket in Lithuania.

ASVEL are seventh in the French standings while Cholet are second but level on 33 points with Chalon/Saône, who scraped a 79-78 victory at Strasbourg.

Bulgaria's Ilian Evtimov and Adolphe Michel Jean Baptist had 15 point apiece for Chalon/Saône.

Roanne, Nancy and Gravelines-Dunkerque follow in close pursuit on 32 points.

Nancy prevailed 78-74 at Roanne while Gravelines, who have qualified for the EuroChallenge quarter-finals, won 80-74 at Poitiers.

Sixth-place Hyeres-Toulon fell 82-70 at Pau-Lacq-Orthez, who were led by Teddy Gipson's 20 points and six assists.

Pau are ninth but level on 28 points with eighth-place Le Mans, who edged Paris-Levallois 73-71.

France point guard Antoine Diot finished with 16 points and eight assists for Le Mans.

FRA – Batista shines but Le Mans’ upset bid comes up short at Cholet

CHOLET (LNB) - Defending champions Cholet are breathing a sigh of relief after scraping a narrow victory in the opening game of their LNB play-off quarter-final series against Le Mans.

Erman Kunter's team prevailed 77-75 and will now go for a sweep of their opponents when they play at Le Mans on Friday.

Brazil international Joao Paulo Batista led all scorers with 23 points while Sammy Mejia of the Dominican Republic - named the top foreigner in the league at an awards ceremony over the weekend - had 15 to pace Cholet.

Kunter, who was named LNB Coach of the Year, knows Cholet can play better yet he wasn't unhappy after the contest.

"If you look at other championships, the first game is always difficult," he said.

"It is the victory that counts, the difference was not significant.

“We will try to win there now."

Should a Game 3 decider be needed, that will be played on May 24 back at Cholet.

Le Mans big man Rob Lewin says he and his teammates can build on the performance.

"We must stay together for Friday's game," he said.

"We need to play as we did in the second half, but for 40 minutes."

BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque have the upper hand in their French LNB play-off quarter-final against Roanne after winning the opener at home, 66-60, on Tuesday.

Ben Woodside had 15 points and four assists for Gravelines.

Cyril Akpomedah contributed 13 points and five rebounds while Saer Sene had a game-high 12 boards to go with his eight points.

That Game 2 will also be played on Friday at Roanne.

On Wednesday night, Hyeres-Toulon visit SLU Nancy and Coupe de France winners Elan Chalon/Saône are at home to ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne.

HTV had budget issues recently, there were talks that they would be retrograded to lower division, being unable to assume both its debt and a ProA season.

They managed to present a plan that would allow them to reimburse enough debt, but the budget will once again be quite limited for Alin Weisz to make his roster.

It's official site, so I guess it's up to date. Or as much as what has been confirmed and validated by the League.
