  • FC Bayern München launching an ambitious basketball project

There are strong rumors in German media that German NT coach Bauermann will become head coach at FC Bayern München (the football/soccer club, indeed ;-) who finally start to take basketball seriously and invest some money to become a leading club in basketball, too. Bayern München currently plays in second division only but the budget numbers rumored (supposedly 3 mio € for a 2nd div. team) suggest that they'll aim for higher goals quickly. Watch out Barca ;-)

If they really invest serious money, it will have a positive effect on the league and put some pressure on the other "big" German clubs ALBA, Brose Bamberg and EWE Baskets Oldenburg. We'll just have to wait and see what will be confirmed in the next days or weeks. The most interesting bit so far is that they won't take the easy route and just buy into the league (a wildcard for EUR 100k should be available this summer) but want to qualify.

When the Rudi Sedlmeyer halle closed a year or so ago, I read that Bayern were disappointed to learn that because they were planning to use the venue. Is it still their plan as part of the project or the arena will be demolished? Looks like a suitable venue for them, or any other future bundesliga club from Munich.

You point out one of the biggest obstacles in Munich basketball. Sedlmayr Halle is closed and it seems as if all plans to reopen it or build a new sports park instead are not more than ideas right now.

It appears as if the venue in question for the next season is the Olympic Ice Stadium.

Just now a press agency brought the news that Bauermann is indeed in talks with FC Bayern München but both his contractual situation with the German federation and the venue are still open questions.

Just realised Maras is playing for them, didn't know. In fact I had lost trace of him, guess his career went a bit downhill.

It's official: Dirk Bauermann will be Bayern's new head coach. He'll continue to be in charge of the national team, too.
              Only Boris can judge me.

And today media reports that signing Dirk Nowitzki after he ends his NBA career in some years is a goal...

That's a hell of an ambitious project that growns in Munich. We'll have to wait and see what will happen in the upcoming years but German basketball definitely gained a new and forceful project.

David Hein wrote a longer article about Bayern Munich's ambitions and the Bauermann deal. Their goal is to be a European level club within 3-5 years.

According to Süddeutsche Zeitung (serious source), Bayern is bringing in young Bastian Doreth, Demond Greene (Larissa/A1), Beckham Wyrick (Brose Baskets) and ... Aleksandar Nadjfeji (Tübingen). Damn ... they'll eat the 2nd division competition alive with that kind of players.

I have seen so many ambitious basketball team plans im Germany and at the end the end all up in bankruptcy.

Does somebody know who the sponsors of the Munich teams are?

As far as I understand it, they are mainly funded by the main (football) club, which is notoriously rich.

Ok, an update on the project. Uli Hoeness is very engaged in the project and wants Bayern to become a big player in european basketball and he didn't fail to reach his goals very often in the past, also managing to build everything on very solid finances....

Here's the roster for next season, the team will be competeing in the second german league:

Steffen Hamann, Jonathan Wallace, Bastian Doreth
                          Demond Greene, Artur Kolodziejski
                          Beckham Wyrick
                          Aleksandar Nadjfeji, Darius Hall
                          Robert Maras, Bogdan Radosavljevic

                          Coach: Dirk Bauermann
"It's not about four guys working to get one player open and give the ball to him."- Ettore Messina

                          Sanchez, Ginobili, Basile, Kukoc, Sabonis

And why should a soccer team have an interest to share his funds with a basketball team? This makes completely no sense to me!

And of course the hall is the biggest obstacle. If the hall is to big and the attendance is small, you make no profit out of your home games. If the hall is to small you do not qualify for Euroleage standards.

Correct! Would be the first time ever, that a big soccer club shows interest in basketball.

...of course only if you don't count clubs like Real Madrid, Barca, Galatarasay, PAOK etc. etc. etc as soccer clubs.
