No, he's not returning to Bremerhaven.

Braunschweig manages to keep Marcus Goree for another season. Still an excellent player for this level.

Some elite rosters off the top of my head.

    Brose Baskets:
    John Goldsberry - Brian Roberts
    Anton Gavel - Karsten Tadda
    Casey Jacobsen
Predrag Suput - Reyshawn Terry - Philip Neumann
    Tibor Pleiss - Kyle Hines

    ALBA Berlin:
    Marko Marinovic - Hollis Price
    Julius Jenkins - Lucca Staiger
    Imanuell McElroy
Tadija Dragicevic - Derrick Allen* - Sven Schultze
    Patrick Femerling - Yassin Idbihi

*although I suspect he'll appear primarily at center, as crazy as that may sound

    EWE Baskets Oldenburg:
    Nemanja Protic - Daniel Hain
    Louis Campbell - Obi Muonelo
    Rickey Paulding - Acha Njei
    Steven Smith - Oliver Stevic
Aron Baynes - Chris McNaughton - Robin Smeulders

    Telekom Baskets Bonn:
    Nic Wise - Sajmen Hauer
    Folarin Campbell - Jeremy Hunt
    Vincent Yarbrough - Alex King
    Tim Ohlbrecht - Patrick Flomo
    Chris Ensminger - Jacob Jaacks

Too busy to research the other ones now ...

Default Update on the German league - Cup quarterfinals are this week

Just a quick and dirty roundup of what's up in Germany.

With only one loss so far, Brose Baskets Bamberg dominates the league at will. It's probably the best ball to be seen in the German league in a long time. Most believe it's time for a repeat of the double. Bamberg will host the league cup final four and therefore is automatically qualified.

Frankfurt Skyliners are hiring and firing constantly. But not due to lack of success but due to a limited budget and injuries. But relying on short term contracts seems to work out. With 15:6 they're second ranked and considered Bamberg's no. 1 competitor. Mostly PG DaShaun Wood (a likely MVP) and Coach Gordon Herbert are credited with this season's success.

With 14:7 Artland Dragons Quakenbrück are back. New coach, impressive roster and just recently signing CB Granada's Rob Kurz midseason as an "extra". They'll go far, they play decent not very spectacular ball and will most likely back on the european stage next year.

Still at 14:7 after yesterday's loss against Telekom Baskets Bonn, ALBA Berlin mightily struggles not to drop out of the top tier of the league. 12 professional players, 5 German internationals plus three German league Allstars and prominent European players like Dragicevic and Marinovic are currently playing the worst ball to be seen in Berlin in a long time. Trailing with 30 points during yesterday's game, the team loses the last bits of respect and the new coach already is up to a tough task. Katzurin already is in danger to miss two of this season's goals within the next 10 days: surviving the Top16 of Eurocup (ALBA's out if losing to Sevilla at home) and reaching the final four of the league's cup, as they have to play at Quakenbrück in the quarterfinals this Wednesday.

Aiming for the final four and chasing Berlin to gain home court advantage in the play-offs this season are the NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig (13:8). Featuring former European stars like Marcus Goree and LaMarr Greer they play decent ball. Perhaps you'll see them next year in an European competition. On wednesday in the German Cup's quarterfinals they host Oldenburg.

EWE Baskets Oldenburg (12:9) were struggling heavily earlier this season. But after dominating the Artland Dragons a week ago, they might be back on track. It needed some heavy mid-season signings... Luka Bogdanovic the most prominent of them. He seems to be the perfect addition to the solid core of European players like Oliver Stevic and Mindaugas Lukauskis.

Up and down is what describes the currently 7th ranked Telekom Baskets Bonn (11:9) best. Relying heavily on athleticism and individual qualities there's good and bad games. Wednesday they have to play Frankfurt in the German Cup's quarterfinals. We'll see if they really are able to compete with one of the league's top teams. If the play-offs were today, it would be the match-up.

The eighth rank is - as usual - highly competed for. Eisbären Bremerhaven currently are ranked 8th with 11:10, narrowly trailed by TBB Trier (11:10) and EnBW Ludwigsburg (10:11) as well as BG Göttingen (10:11).

While Bremerhaven and Ludwigsburg are typical BBL teams with not well known Americans and the occasional German player (Schwethelm at Bremerhaven, Alex Harris at Ludwigsburg), Trier is a bit of a surprise this season. Coached by former NCAA-Champ and ALBA-Berlin player Henrik Rödl, a team consisting of a mix of young Germans (Fassler, Zwiener, Zirbes) and experienced players like Dojcin and Evans plays decent ball and wins more games than expected.

Another sad story is BG Göttingen. While playing impressive in EuroCup, beating Aris on the road and aiming for the EuroCup's quarter-finals, in the German league they lack what's been making them strong during the last years: Defense, team effort and hustle.

I'll just drop those teams, who neither compete for playoffs or in the cup. Facing relegation are Murat Didin's Gloria Giants Duesseldorf (3:17) which become more and more of a one-man-show, as Didin now is not only head coach but took over the position of General Manager as well. Bayreuth (5:15), Giessen 46ers (6:16) and MBC Weissenfels (6:15) compete for the other relegation spot.

Individual stats? Here's the link to the league's leaders and the Top50 by category.

Hey, what's up with Misan Nikagbatse? Did he retire or what?
He was rumored to join San Severo (Italian LegaDue) in the first months of the current season but it didn't happen.

Beko BBL Announce First Awards For Tibor Pleiss, Phillip Zwiener, Immanuel Mcelroy And Dashaun Wood - Apr 12, 2011 (by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber)

It is that time of the year again where the beko BBL announces which players have shined best in certain categories. After winning rookie of the year last season, Tibor Pleiss won another award this season with best German young growth player. Pleiss who is playing his second season with the Brose Baskets Bamberg and already has 3 titles with the Bavarian club and was drafted in the NBA last summer and given to the Oklahoma Thunder got 54 votes. Ratiopharm Ulm point guard Per Guenther (185-G-88) recieved 31 votes and Robin Benzing (208-F-89) 27 points.

The beko BBL also handed out the most improved player for the first time and the recipient is TBB Trier forward Philip Zwiener (198-F-85, agency: Court Side) Zwiener who came from 8 time beko BBL champion Alba Berlin last season has been a big reason for the team from the Mosel being a playoff team for most of the season. His teammate Maik Zirbes came in second place and German National player Per Guenther (185-G-88) came in third place.

In the last years, no beko BBL player has been able to get by Alba Berlin guard Immanuel McElroy (193-G-80, college: Cincinnati) concerning the best defensive player of the year. Mcelroy has been the best defensive player in the league since the 2006-2007 season. Bamberg might have won the season series on the court against Alba Berlin, but when it comes to defense, Mcelroy won his own showdown against Bamberg players Tibor Pleiss that snatched 32 points and his teammate Anton Gavel (189-G-84, agency: Pro One Sports) recieved 26 votes.

There was no surprise as to who would get best offensive player of the year as DaShaun Wood (185-G-85, college: Wright St.) dominated this category getting 123 points. Wood is leading the beko BBL in scoring and there was no player that could challenge him as Artland Dragon guard Tyrese Rice (185-G-87, agency: Priority Sports, college: Boston Coll.) came in second place with 34 votes. This is the biggest lead between the first and second player in the history of the beko BBL. Bamberg forward Predrag Suput (200-F-77, agency: Beo Basket) came in third place with 25 points. Last years winner Julius Jenkins (187-G-81, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Georgia Southern) landed in ninth place.
