Default ESP/USA - Spain to face USA in last tune-up for World Championship

MADRID (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Reigning World and European champions Spain will get a close-up look at Olympic gold medallists USA ahead of the World Championship when they face them in a friendly at La Caja Mágica in the Spanish capital on 22nd August.

Spanish news agency Europa Press confirmed the date for this rematch of the Beijing Olympics final.

It will serve as a way for both teams to wrap-up their preparations before setting off for Turkey where the World Championship begins six days later.

The choice of venue for this showdown is an interesting one as La Caja Mágica usually plays host to tennis tournaments.

In 2009, it became the home of the Madrid Open, a clay court event on both the men's and women's professional tours.

Defending world champions Spain were drawn in Group D of the First Round in Izmir and will face France, New Zealand, Lithuania, Lebanon and Canada in that order.

The USA, meanwhile, will play in Istanbul where their Group B opponents are Croatia, Slovenia, Brazil, Iran and Tunisia.

It's a great tune-up for both teams and I'm sure the atmosphere in Madrid will be electric. But a part of me wishes these two didn't play until the tournament. It kind of takes away from the build up and anticipation of a US/Spain meeting in a serious, official contest. This will be the first time since 2000 (Saitama, Japan friendly) the US and Spain are meeting outside a major tournament.

I'm sure the Spanish have a burning desire to beat the US on its home soil, but Spain being Spain isn't going to show all of its cards, and the US will no doubt be experimenting with its line-ups so that they find a reliable rotation before the WC begin. I question if this friendly will give us a true determination of where these two giants stand.

    It's a reserve team.

List of Lithuanian NT preparation games:

    07-31: vs Finland (Šiauliai, Lithuania)
08-02: vs Czech Republic (Panevėžys, Lithuania)
    08-06: vs Slovenia (Vitoria, Spain)
    08-07: vs Spain (Vitoria, Spain)
    08-13: vs Turkey (Bamberg, Germany)
    08-14: vs Croatia (Bamberg, Germany)
    08-15: vs Germany (Bamberg, Germany)
    08-20: vs Spain (Madrid, Spain)
    08-21: vs USA (Madrid, Spain)
    08-24: vs Iran (Kaunas, Lithuania)

I like this list, as usual it starts with weaker teams and when becomes tougher. Interestingly, we'll see the Iranian NT in Lithuania - it's not a strong competition, but it's something different and I like it. The only bad thing - no games in Vilnius.

Canada will play France in a two game series in mid-August in Toronto. It's titled the 2010 Jack Donohue International Classic. Canada will then join Greece, Serbia, and Slovenia in Athens for the Greece Acropolis Tournament (17th-19th August). Canadas last tune up will be Efes Pilsen Cup Tournament in Ankara, Turkey (21st-23rd August) where they will face off against Argentina, Turkey and Lebanon.

CAN - Men to open FIBA World Championship preparations against China

TORONTO (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Canada begin their preparations for the 2010 FIBA World Championship with an exhibition game against China on 10th August in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Road Warriors will tip off the Jack Donohue International Classic (JDIC) at General Motors Place in Vancouver before rounding out the tournament in Toronto's Air Canada Centre with a double-header against France - one of their opponents in Group D of the FIBA World Championship - on 12th and 13th of August.

Canada head coach Leo Rautins welcomed the decision to open the busy summer in the country's westernmost province.

"We have a quite few guys on our team from British Columbia and this is the ideal environment to tip off the JDIC and our busy summer of competition," he said.

"I look forward to an energetic home court filled with cheering fans in red and white to motivate our guys as we begin the journey to the FIBA World Championship."

And Rautins' counterpart, China head coach Robert Donewald Junior, believes facing the Road Warriors is exactly what his team need.

"I am very excited as this will be a very good road test for China as we prepare for the World Championships," he said.

"We need some tests outside of our country, and we feel this will be a great environment in a great city to get started away from home. This is a warm-up game against a very athletic, talented Team Canada.

"We look forward to seeing some friendly faces in Vancouver as both teams prepare to get each other better and get ready for a successful summer."

Following the domestic games, Canada will travel abroad for a series of exhibition games.

They will join European powerhouses Serbia and Slovenia and host nation Greece in Athens for the Greece Acropolis Tournament (17th-19th August).

Their final tune-up will be the Efes Pilsen Cup Tournament in Ankara, Turkey (21st-23rd August) where they will go up against Argentina, Lebanon and Turkey.

Tickets for the JDIC at General Motors Place go on sale Friday at 14:00 local time (20:00 CET). For more information, click here and enter Canada Basketball.

The JDIC exhibition series marks the first time that Canada will play games on home soil since 2008. China last participated in the 2005 edition of the JDIC in Mississauga, Ontario.

Wow that's really late for the Canadian NT to start playing their exhibition games on the 10th of August!!
Hope this will give the Lebanese NT an advantage to be better prepared once we face them on the first day of the WC on the 28th of August.
