CAN - Men to open FIBA World Championship preparations against China

TORONTO (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Canada begin their preparations for the 2010 FIBA World Championship with an exhibition game against China on 10th August in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Road Warriors will tip off the Jack Donohue International Classic (JDIC) at General Motors Place in Vancouver before rounding out the tournament in Toronto's Air Canada Centre with a double-header against France - one of their opponents in Group D of the FIBA World Championship - on 12th and 13th of August.

Canada head coach Leo Rautins welcomed the decision to open the busy summer in the country's westernmost province.

"We have a quite few guys on our team from British Columbia and this is the ideal environment to tip off the JDIC and our busy summer of competition," he said.

"I look forward to an energetic home court filled with cheering fans in red and white to motivate our guys as we begin the journey to the FIBA World Championship."

And Rautins' counterpart, China head coach Robert Donewald Junior, believes facing the Road Warriors is exactly what his team need.

"I am very excited as this will be a very good road test for China as we prepare for the World Championships," he said.

"We need some tests outside of our country, and we feel this will be a great environment in a great city to get started away from home. This is a warm-up game against a very athletic, talented Team Canada.

"We look forward to seeing some friendly faces in Vancouver as both teams prepare to get each other better and get ready for a successful summer."

Following the domestic games, Canada will travel abroad for a series of exhibition games.

They will join European powerhouses Serbia and Slovenia and host nation Greece in Athens for the Greece Acropolis Tournament (17th-19th August).

Their final tune-up will be the Efes Pilsen Cup Tournament in Ankara, Turkey (21st-23rd August) where they will go up against Argentina, Lebanon and Turkey.

Tickets for the JDIC at General Motors Place go on sale Friday at 14:00 local time (20:00 CET). For more information, click here and enter Canada Basketball.

The JDIC exhibition series marks the first time that Canada will play games on home soil since 2008. China last participated in the 2005 edition of the JDIC in Mississauga, Ontario.

Wow that's really late for the Canadian NT to start playing their exhibition games on the 10th of August!!
Hope this will give the Lebanese NT an advantage to be better prepared once we face them on the first day of the WC on the 28th of August.
