  • "Jonas Valanciunas will miss the final five games of the season due to a grade 2 right ankle sprain, the Grizzlies announced"

    "Grade 2 Sprain (Moderate)

    • Partial tearing of the ligament
    • Moderate tenderness and swelling around the ankle
    • If the doctor moves the ankle in certain ways, there is an abnormal looseness of the ankle joint"

Yeah that doesn’t look like anything serious. A bigger threat in my opinion of him missing the World Cup might be his contract situation. If he opts out and gets a long term big deal from someone they might encourage him to skip the tournament. If this is the case it’s gonna be hard to knock him since he has played for National team every summer.

Don't see this happening. The last time to sign long term contract with Raptors he went for Lithuania (NT camp) to Toronto and came back training with NT once he signed the contract. He's a patriot of NT.
LTU NT will snatch Eurobasket 2029 title with this roster:

        Jokubaitis, Marciulionis, Laurencikas
        Indrusaitis, Brazdeikis, Rubstavicius
        Buzelis, Lelevicius
        Murauskas, Sirvydis
        Tubelis, Krivas

        • So quite unexpectedly JV opts out of his player option and decides to try his luck in the free agency market... That's quite a bold move from him and his agent it seems but maybe they already have some fat long term contract on the horizon, most likely with the same Grizzlies too - otherwise I wouldn't expect a stable family man like Jonas to risk like that in a loaded free agency like this year. Hopefully "the slow footed defensively challenged big" stigma won't be a factor when signing a new deal as well, as this myth has been perpetuated for way too long now and his end of the season with the Grizz pretty much disproved that

          • So JV left Toronto after 7 years spent in the Canadian team and Raptors immeaditely became NBA chams for the first time in their history? That's nice. Those who follow, how Raptors became better (or not) signing Gasol jr. instead of Jonas? Or maybe it's basically all about having Cawhi?

Gasol was a good pass station outside and he is a very good passer, maybe the best after Jokic. He had some good games and defended well but the title goes at most on the account of kawhi.

It was mainly about Kawhi because swapping him with DeRozan was a humongous upgrade. Then factor in the development of Pascal Siakam as the second factor. Gasol was important in that he was a better fit than Valanciunas who at this stage is a better scorer and rebounder. The Raptors needed the smart team defense that Gasol provided as well as his playmaking abilities. But he’s down on the list when it comes to the main factors that resulted in this title. This doesn’t say anything negative about Jonas in my opinion. Only DeRozan takes a hit.

                • Valanciunas signs 3 years deal for 45 mil. Again timing is very good for Nt, next time he gonna be free agent in 2022 there is no champ.

But that he sign with Grizzlies is not good news, Jonas won't see playoffs at all...true NBA basketball is played in playoffs, in that stack West my gues Grizzlies won't make playoofs any time soon ,but he will be main center in rebuilding team.

I hoped he gonna find playoffs team, but Jonas is very reliable guy ,but still when you lose all the time that's not fun.

Crappy contract. Freakin C.Josepth managed to sight three years 37mil. JV in his prime had to go for 55-65 mil.

Centers that's doesn't shoot well is not getting paid anymore in NBA in most cases.Look how much got shooting big Porzingis even coming after seriuos injury, shooting is just must in todays in NBA.

Porzingis example is irrelevant, hes a flat out superstar. JV is a solid starter for absolute majority of Nba teams. Joseph is a bencu tiny role player. How their salary is almost the same is beyond me. Maybe he sacrifised money for a greater role assuming he can sign big at 30. Maybe just poor manager.

Porzingis superstar? He haven't even played in all star game yet and didn't played basketball for 1,5 year and still got paid because he shoots like guard.

Don't compare different position players...nr.1 and nr.2 priorities in NBA today is shooting and playmakers.Everybody want to have as much as possible of such type players (copying Warriors).

5 years ago Valanciunas would have gotten 100m deal with those stats, but times and style changed.Nobody overpaying bigs that can't streach the floor .Only 6 or 7 centers got contracts so far from over 70 players signed and most of old school centers is still it in line for contract ,nobody rushes offer contract for centers in this small ball era... most of them gonna get smaller contracts on second week of free agency.Valanciunas as center was paid alot and sign on first day that's says they realise he is better than most centers in nba, but this is todays NBA prices even for good center that can't shoot.

Warriors totally changed how entire league looks at old school centers.

                          • Sakykite, ką norite, tačiau nėra jokios žalos komandai, kad pasilikome J.Valančiūną. Jis vis dar jaunas ir produktyvus. Kaip seno stiliaus centras, jis nėra NBA ateitis, tačiau puikiai dera tarp kitų „Grizzlies“ žaidėjų“, – užbaigė krepšinio žurnalistas P.Flemingas.

This words is exactly how entire NBA looks to old school centers in 2019.

                            • You have a point, but hes too good to be so poorely paid even for current era. He added passing, three point shot. One of the best scoring and rebounding bigs in Nba right now. Anyway, its good well have him at Nt without complications.

                              • Perfect article which summarises JV's situation again. He's a perfect traditional bruiser at offence, but his problems at D are too vital in contemporary basketball. There's the video footage with his struggle stepping out. This issue not only throwing out traditional bruisers out of the picture in the NBA, but it's even more vital in FIBA. No-one pounds the ball inside too much in tiny FIBA court where there's no three sec D rule and you can play any D you want. It's becoming extreme rarity to see bigs posting up in FIBA, mostly it's pick and roll that is left for traditional bruisers. Even more crafty bigs as Vucevic can't put some real numbers at FIBA for a mediocre team as Montenegro. That basketball is dead. And when you have a center as JV who can't step up, you're paying all the price because all elite teams now are backourt dominated teams. USA, Spain, France...you will get your hands full with their guards. At this point, I see limited role for JV because opposition teams will utilize his p'n'r D even when he'll have another lumberjack as an opponent. With each year, it will be more and more a science of rockets finding the role for JV in contemporary BB, specially FIBA, and more of a gamble and risk than serious plan to match opposition's skillset. In FIBA, not only you get all the damage of non switching big, but their capabilities offensively are so much more limited as well because of rigid, tough, tiny D compared to open deserts of NBA courts. Traditional bigs in NBA nearly gone, while in FIBA they are officially dead, IMO. If you would look at top 25 scorers of WC 19, there's not a single traditional center. In 2014WC there were Haddadi, Ayon, P.Gasol, Baynes, Valanciunas, Raduljica among top 25 best scorers. Now, zero. The shift is radical.

Tai, ką šiame sezone daro Domantas Sabonis, tikrai įspūdinga – renkami trigubi dubliai, patekimas į NBA „Visų žvaigždžių“ rungtynes ir tapimas visišku Indianos „Pacers“, tačiau jis yra ne vienintelis lietuvis, už Atlanto galintis pasigirti solidžiu žaidimu.
