That's the story, ranking the teams based on actual play, not on final standings.
Yes but the actual play at any given day reflects on the final standing right?

For example Spain lost a game but finished first so by your pattern Spain should be below Turkey? No. Spain played better when it mattered just like Greece did. So the story is that teams that played better when iT mattered progressed.

Anyway it is pointless to discuss on something that obvisouly we can not agree.

I don't think it's wise to "rank". The ranking has already been made for us in the tournament. I can just split teams in overachievers and underachievers:

          Overachievers:
1 Serbia (Duda gets by far the best coach award)
2 Greece (2 playmakers out, coach changed. Yet, managed to get a medal)
3 Spain (not really overachievers...just finally got what they deserved)
4 Germany (noone thought that without Dirk, Germany could even get past the 1st round...)

          Underachievers:
1 Turkey (ok, the loss at QF was bad, but to rank up 8th? History is not gonna write how Turkey beat Spain in the 1st round, but how it ended up 8th!)
2 France (too good to be left off the final-4)
3 Israel (ok, not that strong of a team, but lose even to FYROM?)

I didn't rank Slovenia in underachievers since they already had a bad history of being disqualified in QFs. This time they reached the semis and I believe that 4th position is already good enough...

And we lost from France by only 2, your point being? Flawed system or not, like it or not, right now we're the third best team in Europe.

And yeah, you shouldn't talk about the referees.

I agree with the posters who said that winning when it matters is also a VERY important factor.

I don't think France or Russia would have beaten Greece in K.O. games. Similarily, I think that Slovenia would have beaten Greece in regular group games. Just like they beat Serbia, but eventually lost in the semi's.

When games matter, some teams perform better and some team perform worse. Teams like Greece or Serbia perform better. Teams like Slovenia and France perform worse. This is what history tells us and this is what this tournament has confirmed once more.

Argentina usualy sucks in group games, but you don't want to meat them in K.O. games.

              You know the expression.

"When the going gets tough, the tough gets going"

So I don't care what some of you think. The heart of a Champion is more important that attractive basketball.

              So this is my list:
              1. Spain
              2. Serbia/Greece
              4. France/Slovenia/Turkey/Croatia
              8. Russia
              9. Germany
              10.Lithuania
              PAO EUROPEAN CHAMPION 1996 - 2000 - 2002 - 2007 - 2009 - 2011

U r absolutely right also Serbia defeated Spain on this tournament.Does it mean we r better.A lot of luck for Spain on WC also could have lost to Argentina in the semis, didnt play team US for medals, finals against very very tired Greek heroes. And finals against very tired Serbs in this EC. U guys have the best of luck these recent years . But its OK,u lost so many in the past.

Are Saras and Siska playing in Turkey 2010 and Eurobasket 2011? Saras is already 33 and Siska is 31. After Saras, Siska, Lavrinovic era, I think Lithuania will have hard time being a top level team. Who do they have that have potential to be great players between 85-92 born kids? Kleiza? Don't even make me laugh... Such a loser...

Same goes to Spain in my opinion. Serbia though, keeps the new generation coming and they will always do well.

                          What a moronic thread...

There is a rank, the tournament gave it to us.

Everything else is just flamebait and a chance from some people to exercise their hate patterns...

I wonder why the FIBA choose him to make the promotion spot for the WC in Turkey.....?
