Penarol To Face Real Madrid In Historical Meeting Between Two Best Teams Of The 20th Century

Penarol of Uruguay have initiated talks with Real Madrid of Spain to set up a high-profile meeting between the two most successful teams of the 20th century from South America and Europe, respectively.
"We have started to make inquiries with a Spanish group. They thought it was a very good proposal, very interesting. But it has yet to be confirmed," Edgar Welker, the vice-president of Penarol, told Observa.
Welker informed the press that both international heavyweights are in favour of the idea and all they have to do is arrange a date and a venue for where the match will take place. It will either be at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid or at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo.
"It is very exciting for the best from South America to play against the best from Europe. Of course a date will have to be agreed on, but it isn't easy because of all of the activity that is going on right now."
Penarol and Real Madrid met in the first edition of the Intercontinental Cup back in 1960, with the Spaniards winning the trophy after an emphatic 5-1 aggregate victory. However, six years later Penarol avenged that defeat by crushing Real Madrid 4-0 on aggregate in the title decider.
Last Thursday the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) declared Penarol as being the best South American team of the 20th cenury, for everything that they achieved in all of the international competitions of the continent.
Penarol have won the Copa Libertadores five times, and the Intercontinental Cup three times, as well as 45 Uruguayan championships over 118 years of existence.
But Penarol have experienced a drastic change in fortune, and haven't won a single title for the past five years.
This will definitely be a one sided game. I have been following the Uruguayan league since 2007 and Penarol ain't getting better. Besides the fact that they haven't won any silverware they have also struggled in qualifying for the Copa Libertadores (Champions League of Latin America) and the Copa Sudamericana (Europa League of Latin America).
