  • Stern NBA Ref Rigging Consiparcy Worsens

Not that Kings fans needed more fuel for their conspiracy fire, but there is a rather odd development to the Game 6 controversy. Several of my colleagues say they've previously viewed video clips on YouTube of each game from the infamous 2002 Western Conference playoff series between the Kings and Lakers.
But as of today, clips of Game 6 are missing. All the other games are there. You can watch highlights of Kobe Bryant scoring 30 points in Game 1 and the clips from the deciding overtime in Game 7 remain. Another NBA blogger also picked up on the missing clips.
Where did Game 6 go? YouTube won't say. Their official response to my question was as dry as they come.
"We do not comment on individual videos or video sets," a spokesperson said.
    And so the conspiracy continues.

Yep, I checked youtube and many previous clips of game 6 Kings-Lakers now state, "removed for copyright infringement".

Funny, because clips of ALL other games are STILL there. This is going to be the end of the NBA.

LMAO I just looked for some clips on the Mavs-Heat finals in 2006 that had all the phantom fouls (fake) on Wade. The ref rigging was shown in the clips.

Bird Says Stern Rigged game 6

"Back in 1984, former Celtic Larry Bird accused the new NBA Commissioner, David Stern, of rigging games.

It was after Game 6 of the 1984 NBA Finals. Bird had had a legendary game: 28 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 blocks. The Celtics were leading by double figures late in the third quarter. At that stage, the referees tightened their calls against the Celtics, which allowed L.A. to turn on Showtime, and thereby force Game 7.

Bird said to reporters, "Stern told a fan that the NBA needed a seven-game series, that the league needed the money. When the commissioner makes a statement like that to a fan, you know it's going to be tough. When Stern makes a statement like that, things are going to happen. You just don't make statements like that and not expect anything out of it. He's the commissioner and he shouldn't be saying anything like that. The NBA wanted a seventh game because they wanted to make more money and they got their wish. There is no reason for me to lie. He said it. He's a man and he'll live up to it. He may say he said it in jest. But I'm out there trying to make a living and win a championship."

Stern never denied Bird‘s allegations. He avoided the media, refused to let anyone know his whereabouts, and made a curious statement through assistant commissioner Brian McIntyre. “David said Bird's comment is ridiculous. Like every fan in America, he has been looking forward to a seventh game. It's a dream matchup, and everybody has wanted to see a seven-game series since Day 1.”

Bird was never fined and the team suffered no immediate adverse consequences. Red Auerbach, who had taken Stern’s measure early on, disliked him, often criticized his decisions, and constantly called him “stupid” to his face.

What effect did Bird’s comments have? Before Game 7, coach Pat Riley guaranteed a Laker victory. “It's destiny“, Riley said, “I believe in the Fates, and I think it's our time. I think the script is written for us to win."

Officials called 28 fouls on the Celtics, 51 fouls on the Lakers. Celtics won 111-102.

After the game, Tommy Heinsohn said, “I think Bird said those things to get the refs on his side.”"

Indeed, some strange things happen in the NBA. As I'm reading quite a lot of NBA's fan forums, what strikes me most is the popular expectation from the fans that the refs WILL make calls favoring the home team, as if it is completely normal thing nowadays. And what about all those talks about the superstars having to get THEIR CALLS...

I believe it is a major problem in that league. The most talented players, so called "superstars", get the preferential treatment, and get used to it. Therefore, they can't compete at the international level, when the refs are really trying to do their job. They start crying, like Duncan did at the 2004 Olympics... Poor spoiled babies

Yep, but very few NBA fans can even make that distinction. Instead of realizing the players are not getting special treatment in the FIBA games and get exposed a bit as ref creations in the NBA, the NBA fans instead blame it on FIBA being "biased" against the US players because the refs are "foreigners".

But that's what happens when you have the worst educational system in the industrial world.

Anybody have an article from the referee who said the NBA was visiting referees before games?

And what's all this talk about the federales asking other referees about Dick Bavetta?

In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

Try on the same page, there is on the right side "News" section if you want to read about visiting refs before games... Or eventually use Google.

I`m not sure, but as I know - NBA is covering ESPN, so...

NBA defines new role for oversight of referee operations

A United States Army general has been hired by the NBA to the newly created position of senior vice president for referee operations, the league announced Tuesday.

Ronald L. Johnson, a two-star general who recently retired from active duty as deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will be responsible for all aspects of the NBA's officiating program, including recruiting, training and development, scheduling, data management and analysis, and work rules enforcement.

Johnson will report to Joel Litvin, the NBA's president for league and basketball operations.

"As I leave the military and return to civilian life, I can't imagine a more interesting and challenging position," Johnson said in a statement. "Although I don't have a basketball background, other than as a lifelong fan, I am confident that my experience as an Army commander and engineer has equipped me to bring leadership and innovation to the NBA's exceptional officiating program."

The announcement of the new role comes as disgraced referee Tim Donaghy's July 14 sentencing looms for his role in a gambling scheme. The 41-year-old Donaghy pleaded guilty last year to felony charges of taking cash payoffs from gamblers in the 2006-07 season. He faces up to 33 months in prison.

Johnson's hiring formalizes the separation of the league's referee and basketball operations functions, as previously announced by the league. Stu Jackson will continue as executive vice president of basketball operations and remain responsible for all other domestic and international basketball matters.

"Ron's wealth of leadership and management experience, together with his engineering expertise in areas such as systems analysis, processes, and operations, make him an ideal candidate to lead our officiating program," commissioner David Stern said in a statement. "Our referees are the best in the world but they never stop striving to improve and Ron has made a career out of getting the very best out of people."

Was it really necessary to hire an Army general?
