    Bucks check out their options

Posted by: gwoelfel on May 20, 2008 at 11:55PM EST

    BY GERY WOELFEL

The NBA Draft Lottery is history and the selection order for the 2008 draft is set — for now.

Rest assured, there are going to be a slew of changes before the June 26th draft. Several teams have already been fervorishly working the phones, laying the groundwork for potential trades. One of those teams is the Milwaukee Bucks.

In the last week, several officials from both the Eastern and Western Conferences acknowledged the Bucks have been gauging the interest other teams may have in some of their players. The most notable one is All-Star shooting guard Michael Redd.

Redd is unquestionably the Bucks’ best player, the one who would bring back the most in a trade. However, while Redd is one of the most prolific scorers in the league, some teams are reluctant to take on his sizable contract. Redd will make $15.78 million and $17.04M over the next two years, respectively.

What’s more, Redd has a player option for $18.30M for the 2010-2011 season.

Besides Redd, Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva is drawing more than a passing interest from other teams. Several teams are intrigued with Villanueva’s potential, especially considering he is only 23.

In a recent interview with The Journal Times, Bucks general manager John Hammond said the one position he would like to "address’’ is small forward. Desmond Mason and Bobby Simmons are the Bucks’ current small forwards and both are coming off pedestrian seasons.

Hammond could find a potentially good forward in the draft with the team’s eighth overall pick. There is also increasing speculation small forward Ersan Ilyasova, whom the Bucks selected in the second round of the 2005 draft and who spent this season playing for FC Barcelona in Spain, will return to the Bucks next season.

Hammond could also acquire a veteran small forward via a trade. There are a surprising glut of talented small forwards who could be dealt, including Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, Miami’s Shawn Marion, the Clippers Corey Maggette, Sacramento’s Ron Artest, Washington’s Antawn Jamison and Chicago’s Andres Nocioni.

But back to the draft. Here’s how the lottery picks could shake out — for now:

    1. Chicago — Derrick Rose, Memphis. point guard.

    2. Miami — Michael Beasley, Kansas State. power forward.

    3. Minnesota — Brook Lopez, Stanford. center.

    4. Seattle — Jerryd Bayless, Arizona. guard.

    5. Memphis — O.J. Mayo, Southern California. shooting guard.

    6. New York — Eric Gordon, Indiana. shooting guard,

    7. L.A. Clippers — Russell Westbrook, UCLA, combo guard.

    8. Milwaukee — Anthony Randolph, Louisiana State. forward.

    9. Charlotte — Kevin Love, UCLA. power forward.

    10. New Jersey — Danilo Gallinari, Italy, small forward.

    11. Indiana — D.J. Augustin, Texas, point guard.

    12. Sacramento — Darrell Arthur, Kansas, power forward.

    13. Portland — Donte Greene, Syracuse, small forward.

    14. Golden State — Chase Budinger, Arizona, small forward.

Cavaliers and Bucks trade proposal i made a few days ago.

    Wally S is an expiree
    Damon Jones is an expiree
Ilgauskas has a short tem contract compared to Dan Gadzuric, and he is also a top 10 center in the NBA.

I like this trade proposal better because the Cavs are going to have a legit 2nd option in Michael Redd, and they can also have a major improvement in the PF position by acquiring Charlie Villanueva in this deal.

The Cavs will likely draft a Center in the 2008 NBA draft to replaced the Aging Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and I think this transaction will help the Cavalier to get back in the Eastern Conference Finals next year.

    Cavaliers Starting 5

    C- Ben Wallace
    F- Charlie Villanueva

Seattle Thinking About Dealing No. 4 Pick?

    May 21, 2008 - 5:08 pm

    The Seattle Times

The Sonics dropped down to the fourth pick on Tuesday night, despite having a legitimate shot at landing one of the top two picks, and could be looking to deal the selection, according to The Seattle Times.

"Everybody goes into the lottery with hopes of getting the No. 1 pick, but we're excited to have the fourth pick because we feel like we can get a quality player there," general manager Sam Presti said. "We'll get someone that can help and continue to build on the foundation that we have in place."

Presti admitted that the team is willing to discuss trades for the pick, although they still feel as though they can grab a top-tier player.

Seattle has six picks in June's Draft, including two first-rounders.

"With that many selections in the draft, we're certainly going to be busy," Presti said. "The phone will probably ring a few times on draft night. We're going to use those assets as ways to try to build our team and build on the foundation that we have in place."

The Bucks wants to dump the contract of Michael Redd, and they are going to build their team around Andrew Bogut/Yi Jianlian/ Anthony Randolph and Ramon Sessions.

No way, Bucks are not Grizzlies! They have Bogut on C, no way that they would aquire Ilgauskas. Their biggest need is SG/SF not C.

Chicago Bulls have interest in Cavs guard Snow as head coach

Eric Snow is under contract with the Cavs through the 2008-09 season for $7.3 million.

Cavaliers guard Eric Snow is a candidate for the Chicago Bulls head coaching vacancy, according to Snow's agent, Steve Kauffman.

The interview is the easy part. The challenge is that Snow must resolve his contract situation with the Cavs. Snow is under contract through the 2008-09 season for $7.3 million. Kauffman said Bulls GM John Paxson and Cavs GM Danny Ferry were scheduled to talk today. Ferry and Paxson were not available when contacted by The Plain Dealer this afternoon.

"This is unusual because [Snow] is technically an active player," Kauffman said. "We're hopeful Eric can have an interview with the Bulls but there are issues contractually that have to be worked out because of disability insurance."

Snow can't become a coach until the Cavs either buy out his contract or Snow is granted a medical exemption because he can no longer play. But that is up to the insurance company.

"When you're going through a disability claim, you often have to show that you're trying to make a comeback," Kauffman said. "In this situation, that might be very difficult. This probably would've worked out better if things wouldn't have leaked."

Snow had surgery on his left knee before the season opener. He played in only 22 games because his knee was never the same. He spent the season tutoring the Cavs' younger players.

"If they were interested, I don't think Eric would rule out the Cavaliers as an assistant coach," Kauffman said. "Several teams have contacted him about becoming an assistant coach."

One of the those teams is the Charlotte Bobcats, according to a league source. Snow would join coach Larry Brown's staff. Snow played under Brown in Philadelphia.

"That's because of his work ethic," said former Sixers assistant Randy Ayers, now an assistant with the Washington Wizards. "Eric went from a small forward and power forward in high school to a guy who developed into running a team at the pro level. He made himself a point guard. He also had some great coaching in college in Jud Heathcote and he played under Larry Brown. Coaching is what Eric wants to do and he has prepared himself."

Snow was selected in the second round by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1995 draft but traded that same year to the Seattle Supersonics. Snow developed a reputation over the years as a solid defensive guard and became a staple of Brown's defense with the Sixers. Snow, a Canton native, joined the Cavs via trade in the summer of 2004.

It's believed that other candidates for the Bulls job include former Cavaliers head coach John Lucas, Sacramento Kings assistant Chuck Person, former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey and Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeaux.

Nine Lottery Teams Interested In Trading?

              Source: The Columbian

At the same time, reports from other NBA cities suggest there may be a glut of lottery teams who are interested in shopping their picks, including Minnesota (No. 3 pick), Seattle (No. 4), New York (No. 5), the L.A. Clippers (No. 7), Milwaukee (No. 8), Charlotte (No. 9) and New Jersey (No. 10).

Even Miami president Pat Riley indicated immediately after the Heat landed the No. 2 overall selection that he would shop that coveted pick — where either Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose will be available — over the next month.

You want to trade aging Z and replace him with Ben Wallace? Dude this is not 2004. Ben is old and his career is unofficialy finished. He can't play basketball anymore! Except maybe in PBA or 7th league of Kazakhstan. Even if so, you put Kosta Koufos to backup and Ben Wallace to main position?

Monta Ellis to the Memphis Grizzlies?

It's possible that the Memphis Grizzlies will make a run at Golden State guard Monta Ellis this summer, according to The Examiner.

He will become a restricted free agent this summer, and while team President Chris Mullin is hopeful that he'll be able to retain the star, he could command quite a bit of money on the market.

The Grizzlies have a lot of cash, and they play roughly three hours from Monta's hometown of Jackson, Miss. The team is reportedly adamant about targeting the explosive guard.

It is believed that if Memphis presents Ellis with an offer sheet of more than $10 million, Golden State may be forced to part ways with the guard.

I think it's a good signing for the Grizzlies if they can get the service of Monta Ellis, who is one of the most explosive Combo Guard in the NBA last season.

Ellis is the type of player that isn't afraid to take the last shot in the 4th quarter, and he is also one of the best fastbreak finisher in the NBA.

The Grizzlies are planning to implement a run and gun offense next season, and with the salary cap that they have it's possible that they can acquire Monta Ellis before the season starts in November.

If this deal will happen it would make the Grizzlies a very young athletic team that might contend in the playoffs in the near future because their current star player Rudy Gay is improving every year, and they also have the draft rights to Marc Gasol, who is arguably one of the best player in the Euro League.

He might not be as good as his older brother, but he is a better upgrade to Kwame Brown and Darko Milicic.

                  Memphis Grizzlies Starting 5

                  C- Darko Milicic
                  F- Hakim Warrick
                  F- Rudy Gay
                  G- Monta Ellis
                  G- Mike Conley Jr.

6th Man: Mike Miller or Javaris Crittenton

2008 Summer Signings, Trades, and Rampant Rumors

All the Euro forums have there rumors and signings threads already busy. We've got nothing on the NBA except for our Cleveland Cavaliers thread. Here goes...

                    Current big rumors:
                    • Varejao will be traded to Golden State for Brandon Wright
                    • Vujacic will get a 4 year, $24 million contract from LA
                    • Every forward in the league is available: Prince, Richardson, Diaw, Howard, Rasheed, Artest, Miller
                    • Garbajosa may stay in the NBA

Let's also use this discussion to start the annual "Toni Kukoc is coming back from retirement" talk.
"I really like the attitudes of eagles. They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas
