NBA’s losing teams hope for big score in lottery

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer 6 hours, 0 minutes ago

Lucky Lefty and Larry Legend are the latest characters looking for a big score in New Jersey.

Mike D’Antoni will try to make the Knicks fortunate before he can make them good, and the Seattle SuperSonics are sending Kevin Durant in hopes of landing the next, well, Kevin Durant.

They are all expected Tuesday night at the draft lottery, the NBA’s shortcut to go from loser to winner.

Just like last year, two stud freshmen are the top prizes. The Miami Heat have the best chance to win the right to choose between Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose, but history says they won’t. Only twice, in 2003 and ‘04, has the team with the best odds won under the current lottery format, which began in 1994.

That’s why the other 13 teams headed to Secaucus, N.J., will do what they can to boost their hopes. The hometown Nets, back in the lottery for the first time since 2001, are sending team investor Shawn Carter, better known as rap mogul Jay-Z, to take their seat on the stage.

“This is very exciting and I hope my nickname ‘Lucky Lefty’ holds up,” he said.

The Nets have just a 1 percent chance of winning the No. 1 pick. Jay-Z will be seated next to Indiana Pacers president and Hall of Famer Larry Bird. Durant and Miami’s Dwyane Wade are among the star players representing their fallen franchises.

The Knicks, with a lottery pick again after shipping top-10 choices to Chicago each of the last two years in the Eddy Curry trade, are sending new coach D’Antoni.

“I want Mike to come with me because he’s lucky they tell me,” new president Donnie Walsh said. “We need somebody with luck. I haven’t been lucky in that thing.”

The lottery determines the top three picks, with the rest of the first 14 spots made in inverse order of a team’s record. The Heat’s NBA-worst 15-67 finish gives them a 25 percent chance of choosing first and they can do no worse than fourth.

Seattle has a 20 percent chance of getting the top pick, with Minnesota and Memphis at 14 percent.

The odds meant nothing last year, when Memphis, Boston and Milwaukee, the teams with the three worst records, all fell out of the top three spots, the first time that had happened under the current format.

Portland moved up from sixth to get the No. 1 pick, which it used on Greg Oden, and Seattle vaulted to second and settled for Durant, who won the Rookie of the Year award. The favorite next season will be Beasley, a forward who averaged 26.5 points and an NCAA-best 12.5 rebounds for Kansas State, or Rose, the point guard who nearly carried Memphis to the national title.

The Celtics were one of the devastated teams last year, when they had the second-best chance of landing a top-two pick and instead tumbled all the way to fifth. Boston then packaged that pick in a trade with Seattle to acquire Ray Allen, and later pried Kevin Garnett from Minnesota in another deal.

The Celtics will be hosting Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals a few minutes after the lottery finishes, so perhaps the Heat or Sonics shouldn’t despair if the balls don’t bounce their way.

“If it’s not No. 1 or No. 2, the balls fall as they may, the chips fall as they may,” Wade said. “We’ve just got to make the best choice that we can make. Whether it’s keeping the pick, trading the pick, whatever we’re doing, we’ve just got to make the best choice for the team that we have and the faces of the team that we have … bringing the right guy in, that’s what it’s all about.”

New York has the fifth-best chance at No. 1, with the Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Chicago and New Jersey rounding out the top 10. Indiana, Sacramento, Portland and Golden State—which missed the playoffs in the powerful Western Conference despite a 48-34 record—are the four biggest long shots.

The Knicks can do no worse than eighth, still an improvement after losing what would have been the Nos. 2 and 9 choices the last two years. That’s little reassurance to Walsh, hoping to quickly jump-start the rebuilding in New York.

“I’m not comfortable at all. I want to win it. I really want to win it,” Walsh said. “There’s good talent, one through eight. Obviously one is going to be better than eight.”

AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds in Miami contributed to this report.

Bulls won the lottery! Knicks only 6th, woes continue!

          1. Bulls
          2. Heat
          3. Wolves
          4. Sonics
          5. Grizzlies
          6. Knicks
          7. Clippers
          8. Bucks
          9. Bobcats
          10. Nets
          ....

Will the Bulls pick Rose, a Chicago native? Rose is an extremely gifted athlete and scorer and playmaker, but the last time the Bulls used a top 2 pick to pick the best PG in the NCAA that fit that description -- Jason/Jay Williams -- the pick did not turn out as well as envisioned, even before the accident. But I guess Bulls will rather believe that Rose will turn out another Chris Paul than Williams. If so, Rose will be the first guard selected as the #1 pick in a long time.

Chicago should get Beasley and trade Thomas or Gooden for some. I think Hinrich and Duhon is a good PG rotation already. Plus, they'll get that post presence they wanted.

Surely the Bulls must select Beasley? For years the Bulls have not been able to get someone who could consistently provide a low post thread and have rebounding ability. Beasley is gifted in both areas.

Problem I think may be rumours about his lack of work ethic.

                Commentary:

-We’ve already heard NBA teams wonder about the poor wingspan that Jerryd Bayless possesses, at just 6-3, especially considering that there are already positional concerns about him. O.J. Mayo is also just slightly above average (for a normal person) with his 6-6 wingspan, but still has solid size at 6-5 in shoes, which will allow him to play either guard position effectively in the NBA. Donte Greene doesn’t have much length to speak of either at 6-10. Derrick Rose is the real deal on paper as well at 6-3 ½ in shoes with a 6-7 wingspan, as is Michael Beasley at 6-9 and his 7-0 wingspan. Alexis Ajinca is an absolute freak of a human being, standing 7-1 with a 7-9 wingspan. As you can see in this table, he would be the longest player measured in NBA pre-draft camp history if he indeed measures out that way in Orlando this year, which is not always a give-in we must say. Scouts will also like Nicolas Batum’s measurements, at 6-8 with a 7-1 wingspan.

                        NBA mock draft

By Jonathan Givony, Draft Express May 21, 10:02 am EDT

                        1. Chicago Bulls – Michael Beasley, PF, 19, 6-9, 235 pounds (Kansas State freshman): Chicago strikes gold by securing the athletic scoring power forward they’ve been lacking for some time now. This pick also could be in play.

                        2. Miami Heat – Derrick Rose, PG, 19, 6-3, 190 pounds (Memphis freshman): No hesitation here. The Heat will count their blessings as they draft arguably the most physically gifted point guard to enter the NBA since Baron Davis.

                        3. Minnesota Timberwolves – Brook Lopez, C, 20, 7-0, 260 pounds (Stanford sophomore): Not a sexy pick, but Minnesota needs a low-post presence to move Al Jefferson to power forward. Timberwolves also might not have given up on Randy Foye quite yet to take Jerryd Bayless or O.J. Mayo.

                        4. Seattle SuperSonics– Jerryd Bayless, PG/SG, 19, 6-3, 199 pounds (Arizona freshman): Bayless isn’t ready to play the point full time, but he’s the best value at this pick and suits the Sonics’ needs better than anyone else.

                        5. Memphis Grizzlies – Kevin Love, PF/C, 19, 6-9, 255 pounds (UCLA freshman): This may be a reach, but Memphis likes Love and needs to take a frontcourt player at all costs.

                        6. New York Knicks – O.J. Mayo, PG/SG, 20, 6-5, 195 pounds (USC freshman): Clearly the best player available. A great fit for Mike D’Antoni’s offense, and probably the most ready player around for the New York City circus.

                        7. Los Angeles Clippers – Eric Gordon, SG, 19, 6-3, 215 pounds (Indiana freshman): The Clippers need a pure point guard here, but they could also have a hole to fill at the other guard position, and will want to get value at this pick.

                        8. Milwaukee Bucks – Danilo Gallinari, SF, 19, 6-9, 209 pounds (Armani Jeans Milano, international): Gallinari is the best player available, the best fit for the Bucks’ needs and also an outstanding compliment to their existing personnel.

                        9. Charlotte Bobcats – Anthony Randolph, SF/PF, 18, 6-11, 220 pounds (LSU freshman): Charlotte has talent and potential at every position. With no center with value in sight, the Bobcats may opt for an athletic forward and keep Okafor at center.

                        10. New Jersey Nets – DeAndre Jordan, C, 19 , 7-0, 260 pounds (Texas A&M freshman): Jordan is a bad fit for Lawrence Frank, but is likely the best big man available, which is New Jersey’s biggest need.

                        11. Indiana Pacers – D.J. Augustin, PG, 20 , 5-11, 175 pounds (Texas sophomore): The Pacers feel fortunate to secure the best player available at their biggest position of need – while also filling their necessity of drafting a player with strong character.

                        12. Sacramento Kings – Donte Greene, SF/PF, 20, 6-10, 220 pounds (Syracuse freshman): The Kings have long-term needs at both forward positions and therefore value an athletic perimeter shooter like Greene.

                        13. Portland Trail Blazers – Russell Westbrook, PG/SG, 19, 6-3, 187 pounds (UCLA sophomore): With a big point guard in Brandon Roy already on the roster, an athletic, defensive-oriented combo guard with major potential makes some sense here.

                        14. Golden State Warriors – Kosta Koufos, C, 19, 7-1, 245 pounds (Ohio State freshman): The Warriors love their shooters, and could always use another long big man who can play under Don Nelson immediately.

                        15. Phoenix Suns (from Atlanta) – Joe Alexander, SF/PF, 21, 6-8, 230 pounds (West Virginia junior): The Suns have all kinds of needs with their aging starting lineup, but Alexander has the kind of athleticism, attitude and upside that can provide short-term and long-term dividends.

                        16. Philadelphia 76ers – Darrell Arthur, PF, 20, 6-9, 215 pounds (Kansas sophomore): The Sixers’ biggest need is at power forward and Arthur has the athleticism and skill to run in their up-tempo system.

                        17. Toronto Raptors – Nicolas Batum, SF, 19, 6-8, 214 pounds (Le Mans Sarthe Basket, international): The Raptors’ biggest hole is at small forward, and Batum’s athleticism, perimeter defense and international background will be very appealing to their staff.

                        18. Washington Wizards – Chase Budinger, SG/SF, 20, 6-7, 190 pounds (Arizona sophomore): The Wizards may have bigger needs, but Budinger has a lot of value at this spot and Washington can definitely use an athlete and perimeter shooter with a high basketball IQ.

                        19. Cleveland Cavaliers – Chris Douglas-Roberts, SG/SF, 21, 6-7, 200 pounds (Memphis junior): The Cavaliers desperately lack someone who can create shots next to LeBron James.

                        20. Denver Nuggets – JaVale McGee, C, 20, 7-0, 237 pounds (Nevada sophomore): The Nuggets could be too intrigued by McGee’s all-around talent to let him slip any further.

                        21. New Jersey Nets (from Dallas) – Marreese Speights, PF/C, 20, 6-10, 245 pounds (Florida sophomore): The Nets need help in the post, and Rod Thorn will love the upside that Speights has as a running mate for Devin Harris.

                        22. Orlando Magic – Alexis Ajinca, C, 20, 7-1, 225 pounds (Hyeres-Toulon, international): The Magic are desperate for size up front, and Ajinca can play both behind and next to Dwight Howard thanks to his length, athleticism and versatility, even if it will take time for him to develop.

                        23. Utah Jazz – Roy Hibbert, C, 21, 7-2, 272 pounds (Georgetown senior): Hibbert’s stock has fallen, but no system in the NBA suits him better than Utah’s flex offense, and Jerry Sloan will value his experience, character and basketball IQ.

                        24. Seattle SuperSonics (from Phoenix) – Brandon Rush, SG/SF, 22, 6-7, 211 pounds (Kansas junior): You can never have enough athleticism and perimeter shooting on the wing, and that’s exactly what Rush provides, as well as defense.

                        25. Houston Rockets – Robin Lopez, PF/C, 20, 7-0, 255 pounds (Stanford sophomore): Yao Ming’s injuries make this pick a no-brainer, especially considering the energy and activity level Brooks Lopez’s less-heralded brother brings.

                        26. San Antonio Spurs – Courtney Lee, SG/SF, 22, 6-5, 200 pounds (Western Kentucky senior): High character, extremely versatile defender, which is exactly what the Spurs have been looking for the past few years to eventually replace Bruce Bowen.

                        27. New Orleans Hornets – Ty Lawson, PG, 20, 5-11, 175 pounds (North Carolina sophomore): The Hornets have bigger needs on the wing, but they might not pass up an opportunity to draft an athletic, up-tempo backup to Chris Paul.

                        28. Memphis Grizzlies (from L.A. Lakers) – Jason Thompson, C, 21, 6-11, 250 pounds (Rider senior):

Memphis needs all the size it can get, and Thompson has plenty of that, as well as skill.

                        29. Detroit Pistons – J.J. Hickson, PF, 19, 6-9, 242 pounds (North Carolina State freshman): Hickson fits the tough, athletic mold of player Detroit likes, and he still has upside to grow alongside their veteran core.

                        30. Boston Celtics – DeVon Hardin, C, 21, 6-11, 250 pounds (California senior): The Celtics get the defensive-oriented athletic backup center they need.

Chicago's suprise win in lottery could make Kansas State's Michael Beasley the top pick.

IMO Rose is better than Beasley. Same with Wade is better than Carmelo. Rose can be the leader and not so much selfish - Remember Wade helped to win Champ Cup. Beasley will be extra selfish like Carmelo and his shooting percentage will be so extra low that kevin durant will be considered as sniper compared to him. I am sure that his percentage and rkg will be so extra small - like chinese estate worker salary here in Lithuania. Of course if Bulls will want to loose like Denver do - they will take Beasley and Miami will take Rose. Wade + Rose in same team, that should be very interesting.
