  • NBA Europe Live 2008

Hy!, Today the NBA has published that this summer it will be the NBA Europe Live 2008, and I think that it is allways great to see NBA teams playing all arround here, but I am quite disappointed becouse that it will be only NBA Teams playing each other. In the NBA web page they are saying that is a matter of promoters. Well, what do you think? that is more interesting only NBA Teams games or NBA-Euroleague Teams games?. I'm sure that here is, by far, more interesting the second choice, and no one of them is interesting in usa.
What is the real reason?. My oppinion is that the reason is in the three loses in the last year of an NBA Team in front of Euroleague teams. What do you think?

With respect to the Euroleague, you know, we are continually talking to Euroleague about what will be the best format for any particular year. My expectation is that this is just this year, and that when we sit down and talk about what the best way will be for next year, you know, I think we will be playing teams from the Euroleague as part of a mix.

But I think it's fair to say that the various promoters who are putting on the games thought that this year at this time, the most profitable for them would be the NBA teams playing each other and so we acceded to that general direction.
      profitable
yeah, some sponsor (as EA for example) doesn't want his brand to be seen as a sponsor of an event where NBA team might eventually lose a game vs. some unknown random Unykaha Maljagha (sp?)

Well I seriously believe that the agressive marketing image of NBA Stern was building through the past two decades demands NBA team's supremacy towards the rest. They're practicaly saying NBA=basketball, and they're succesfull conviencing a large ammount of countries/masses with that. Every lost game vs. an european team means this idealisation having less and less impact on european/international countries (except England ), NBA loosing it's virtual supremacy and consecutively it's fans.

NBA already lost their supremacy in traditional bbal nations on the balkans, I believe Greece and Lithuania easily as well...
for example going to a NBA live europe seeing your so much idolised sonics and Durant losing to a team with one of their main players called Fuck.a, I mean c'mmon Durant is half god, isn't he?
people start to wonder about Durant's godness status, start wondering on who the hell was that ugly skinny Fuck.a, and can be a bit confused about bball in general, all this can be enough for them not to buy "his holyness" t-shirt, which in the end is the worst thing that can happen for Stern.... even if you don't watch the games, buy the merchandise mofo!

this way they'll get a "randomhypedstar" vs. "randomhypedstar2" game where NBA can't lose, both teams can take it easy and concentrate on dunks instead of traveling rules, that nasty zone defense and those 99 P&R's in a row. Show, man... that's what's all about. And with NBA vs. NBA team they help growing NBA fan base, while at NBA vs. local club I'd say in most venues there are the local fans supporting the local team and NBA fan base doesn't exactly profit that much.

On his latest comment on the European expansion issue, his sternines said that "We think the appeal of our sport is much broader". THEIR sport.

Yep. You and Josko are right.

I hope the NBA schedules some games against EL teams. It's just more fun to watch than two NBA teams. I think that genuine fans of basketball would much rather watch Maccabi TA versus Cleveland rather than Cleveland versus Charlotte. It's just more fun to watch.

I think Josko is right though, this is a way to "save face" for the NBA. If the NBA keeps splitting games 50/50 against EL teams, we can no longer argue that we're the best league. The solution? Just don't play against EL teams. We'll take our baseball and walk home, thank you very much.

Three Euroleague Teams to Travel to North America for NBA Preseason Games
                  Posted Jul 30 2008 9:55AM

                  NBA Europe Live 2008

LONDON, July 30, 2008 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Euroleague Basketball have announced that three Euroleague teams will compete in five NBA preseason games from October 10-21, 2008. The five games, which are part of the Euroleague American Tour, will be played by 2008 Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow (Russia), FC Barcelona (Spain) and Lietuvos Rytas (Lithuania). The teams may face up to five NBA opponents including the Golden State Warriors, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Orlando Magic, the Toronto Raptors and possibly the Los Angeles Clippers.
“These games continue our collaboration with Euroleague Basketball, as we work together to grow the game of basketball on a global basis,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern.

The Euroleague American Tour continues a tradition of friendly competition between the NBA and Euroleague Basketball, dating back to 1978 when Maccabi Tel Aviv played the Washington Bullets in Tel Aviv, Israel. Following the 2008 preseason schedule, 33 games will have been played between the two leagues since Euroleague Basketball was created in 2000, including 13 games during NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS™ in 2006 and 2007.

"We value the chance to partner with NBA teams in their own arenas," Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu said. "There are basketball fans of all types in North America whom we plan to entertain with our own distinct playing style. We are sure they will appreciate again that the international game has a lot to offer our sport."

The Euroleague American Tour tips off on Oct. 10 in Orlando, Florida, when six-time Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow makes its North American debut against the Orlando Magic. CSKA’s second preseason game will take place in Toronto, Canada, when CSKA plays the Toronto Raptors on Oct. 14.

FC Barcelona will play two games as part of the Preseason Shootout at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The 2008 NBA Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers will be Barcelona’s first opponent on Oct. 18, followed by the either Los Angeles Clippers or Toronto Raptors on Oct. 19. For Barcelona, founded in 1926, the games in Los Angeles will be their first played in the United States.

ORACLE Arena in Oakland, Calif. will be the final site of the Euroleague’s American Tour when the Golden State Warriors hosts Lietuvos Rytas on Oct. 21. Rytas is the 2005 ULEB Cup champion and hold five Lithuanian League crowns.

For the third consecutive year, NBA teams will participate in preseason games abroad. The Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets and Washington Wizards will play four games in Barcelona, Berlin, London and Paris as part of NBA Europe Live 2008.

                    It's three actually, not five.

These games should be interesting to watch. I remember that last year some European Teams were able to post some impressive victories against the NBA teams.

And I think it will happen again this year. Are these the only four games? Is the NBA scared of losing?

Anybody want to make predictions? The only NBA team that I would bet on to win is the Lakers against Barcelona. Otherwise, I think CSKA can win both of their games and Rytus can beat Golden State.

The games that are scheduled between Euroleague and NBA teams are in the US (so they're not "official" NBA Europe Live games). Based on the recent history of those games, you'd have to expect the NBA teams to win easily, although they're still more fun than the average preseason game.

There are some games in Europe, but only between NBA teams--Stern's quote is posted further up in the thread. Apparently the local promoters wanted games between NBA teams. The London game is already sold out.

NBA teams in the United States generally win easy (see Knicks last year), if there are upsets I'd bet on the ones happening in Europe.
