Great idea, since California is a zone that can afford to host it because it barely rains there. It also comes from a NHL hockey outdoors game from a few days ago in Buffalo:
A few years ago, in 2002, Argentina did its All Star game near a lake in Villa Carlos Paz, Córdoba (another city that almost never has rain, and a big tourism spot), in a dismountable stadium built for the occasion. This is a photo gallery of it:
