    Lakers 2007-2008 media day

Escorted by an armada of cameras and microphones, Bryant greeted Lakers broadcasters and proceeded to stand before a camera and read team public-service announcements and television promos.
"I'm ready to go. I'm happy to see Fish and Chris back," Bryant said of recent acquisition Derek Fisher and center Chris Mihm, who has returned from an injury. "I'm all smiles."
Bryant was asked if spending part of a long summer playing with the U.S. team in an Olympic qualifying tournament helped alleviate some of his frustrations about the Lakers.
"It was a big help playing with guys who enjoy basketball. It was a monster of a team," he said of the U.S. squad, "so I don't relate it to the other team.
"The guys are ready to go, and whatever management decides to do, my role is to get the best out of this team."
Bryant was asked what made him stop his public criticism of the team during the off-season.
"There was too much going on," he said. "I didn't want any distractions; I didn't want anything hanging over the team, so I just shut it down."
Before addressing the media, he clasped hands with Andrew Bynum, who had been mentioned as ideal trade bait by Bryant in a video made and released by several fans during the off-season.
"I just hope everything is cool," said Bynum, who will be starting his third season as the Lakers center. "I think he was just a frustrated veteran, tired of losing. Everybody wants to win, but he might want to win more than anyone."
Bynum said he had heard about the video but hadn't seen it.
"All he wanted to do was make the team better," Bynum said of Bryant. "And Jason Kidd [part of a proposed trade for Bynum] definitely would do that. All he did was make me work harder. I'm good with everything. I just know that I want to be as good a player as I can be."

Kobe says he's ready to put aside issues, get to work

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Where's Kobe?
There was some uncertainty regarding Kobe Bryant's presence at media day Monday.
"He's running late. He had a doctor's appointment this morning," said Bryant's spokeswoman.
    Bryant emerged at 10:34.
Bryant hadn't said much about the Lakers since late May after calling the team's front office a mess and requesting a trade.
Bryant said he decided to keep a low profile after that, and the team did the same.
"We purposely didn't say anything because we wanted to keep things to ourselves," he said. "There was just too much going on -- things get misconstrued. We don't need that. We don't need any distractions for the season. There was never a doubt I was coming to camp. They knew that, I knew that.
"I was frustrated, so I blew up. Now, it's about taking this team that we have and take it to new heights. I think the important thing for everybody to understand is I want to bring a title back to L.A.
"I'm ready to play. I'm in shape, guys look good. I'm ready to go. My job is to come out here on the floor, help us win ballgames."
The Lakers left later Monday for Honolulu, where they'll begin training camp Tuesday and play their first two exhibition games before returning home Oct. 12.
Bryant pushed for an upgraded roster.
"I'm a soldier. It's not my decision to say whether or not we should fight the war," he said. "My focus and my mind has to be on this team. We have an uphill battle. I'm going to do all I can to help us win."
Unrestricted free agents Luke Walton and Chris Mihm were re-signed, and Derek Fisher, was added, which should improve the backcourt. But an attempt to land Kevin Garnett from Minnesota was unsuccessful, and nothing developed regarding Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal.
"I know they tried," Bryant said. "It wasn't a lack of effort. That means a lot to me."
They haven't won a playoff series since O'Neal left.
Bryant apologized to general manager Mitch Kupchak early in the summer for criticizing him and bemoaning the fact that Andrew Bynum wasn't traded in a video recorded by three fans last spring and sold on the Internet.
Bryant said he text-messaged an apology to Bynum.
"I thought it was kind of messed up," Bynum said. "The only thing it really did was make me work harder. I really didn't think it was that big a deal.
"He's definitely a great teammate, a great player. I just hope that everything's cool, we go out and play basketball together. He wants to win more than anyone. I'm good with everything. I just know I want to come out and be a great player, be as good as I can be."
Several other Lakers said it would be easy to put the whole brouhaha behind them.
"He's a great guy -- he's the best in the business," Brian Cook said of Bryant. "There's a lot of love here. I'm going to try to be positive, pull all the guys together. I'm one of the older guys now."
Walton said he's heard 15 versions of what happened regarding Bryant.
"We'll let all this stuff be under the bridge and we'll move on," he said. "I'm 99 percent positive that by the end of camp, nobody on our team is going to be talking about it. I don't think it's as big a deal as people are making it out to be.
"He wants to win championships. This is the team we have. We had a very strong team last year before everyone got hurt."
The Lakers won 26 of their first 39 games before losing 27 of 43 to finish 42-40. Walton, Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown all missed extensive time with injuries, and Mihm sat out the entire season.
Lakers coach Phil Jackson said the injuries were too much for the Lakers to overcome.
When asked if the current roster had what it takes to compete for a championship, Jackson replied: "I don't know. We'll have to be awfully good in the middle. We've got two guys [Brown and Mihm] who were injured and one guy [Bynum] who was a novice."

Warren, this will be a long year for your team! I predict that this will be another bad year for the Lakers unless a trade happens. Now, these are all just my personal observations, so don't take them as an expert!

Their best player, Kobe, really doesn't know how to win. He's cries and cries and never takes any of the blame. Yes, he's an amazing athlete and great individual player, but he fails in a team game.

Odom and Radmonovic are their next two players. Both are very versatile, but they are also poor defenders. I think both of them sit and watch Kobe too much, even though they are both extremely creative players.

As for the rest of the Lakers, what can they really do? Fisher is stale. Luke Walton, Kwame Brown and Andrew Bynum are weak push-overs. Chris Mihm was OK during the one year he played well, but he might not get back to that level. Vujacic is a good player, but Phil Jackson hates him. Jordan Farmar is terrible shooter.

...with the Clippers down and out too, this will be a long year in LA. Quite frankly I'm glad!
"I really like the attitudes of eagles. They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

Lakers' Fisher back in familiar territory

In addition to sharing the backcourt with Bryant, Fisher is hoping that the Laker superstar will share his thoughts with him.
"I need to talk to him," Fisher said, "if I'm going to play the role I need to play on this team."
That role, said Fisher, will include lending an ear if Bryant needs to talk through his frustrations during the season.
Those frustrations bubbled over during the offseason when Bryant ripped management for its failure to improve the team, asked to be traded, backed off and advocated the trading of center Andrew Bynum.
"No matter what is going on peripherally, [Bryant's] ability to stay focused when he steps on the court is unmatched," said Fisher
There are some changes this time around, said Fisher.
"Who is this team? What are we capable of?" he said. "That's different from before when everybody knew who we were."
"Hopefully, that has finally lifted," Fisher said. "I think Chick is looking down on us, rooting us on to a higher level."

China's Sun Yue will not join Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak said on Sunday that second round pick Sun Yue has not signed with the Lakers and will remain with his current team in China, Beijing Aoshen, for at least one more year.
Kupchak said the club will keep a close eye on Sun' s performance in China's domestic league over the coming months.

                From http://www.hoopshype.com/

Buss, 74, also said Bryant was not necessarily off the table now that the new season had started. Offers will inevitably continue to trickle in, particularly if the Lakers struggle before the February trade deadline. "I would certainly listen," Buss said. "At any time, I think you have to do that with anybody. It's just part of the game, to listen to somebody who has a dissatisfied player that you think is going to fit. You can't keep too many loyalties. You've got to look at it as a business. He looks at it the same way I look at it

Bryant has four years and $88.6 million left on his contract, although he can end his Lakers career by terminating his deal in two years. Such a move by Bryant would leave $47.8 million of his money on the table, but would also leave the Lakers without one of the most dynamic players in their 60-year history. "I tend not to think in basketball terms that many years down the road because things change so dramatically, but he could test the waters at that point," Buss said. "If he still is in that frame of mind, then hopefully we can do a sign-and-trade and get some comparable talent. I would like to think that we win between now and then so that it doesn't come up."

Buss, who has presided over eight championships and five other NBA Finals appearances in his 28 previous years of ownership, acknowledged considering offers for Bryant over the summer -- none of them deemed remotely good enough to act upon -- and also conceded that the gaping hole in Bryant's contract could make the nine-time All-Star an ex-Laker by 2009.

Declining to give specifics, Buss said he might have pulled the trigger on a trade offer that was "within reason." "You have to get comparable value when you make a trade," he said. "It's very hard to trade somebody like him because people who have enough material to make it worthwhile are usually contenders and they don't want to make the trade. "What was offered was not ever under consideration. And I told Kobe that. I told him I would try my best to accommodate his wishes, but that I could not afford to let him go unless we got comparable talent, if there is such a thing. . . . I even told him occasionally what I was offered and I said, 'You have to know that this is not in favor of the Lakers. This would just be terrible to do.' And he said, 'I understand.'

Buss acknowledged frustration at losing out to old rivals in Boston for Kevin Garnett's services -- "I personally feel that we made a better offer than the people who were successful," he said -- and also gave a vote of confidence to his often-criticized front office, specifically his son, Jim -- the team's vice president of player personnel -- and General Manager Mitch Kupchak. "I think Mitch does a terrific job because I'm right there and I know what's happening," Buss said. "Mitch has done everything humanly possible. Our team does not have a lot of tradable players. Hopefully we will have some in time, but currently we do not. "We've got two or three players that people would like to have, but they want them giving us not comparable returns. I am aware of every single trade that he has tried to make. What we had to offer just wasn't sufficient for them

The Knicks will hardly be far enough under the salary cap to make Bryant an offer, but while Bryant has talked about playing in Chicago, New York seems an ideal stage to complete his career. Bryant would be the kind of star New York demands, and he loves that kind of spotlight and attention. And after another down season and with an unhappy Bryant, the Lakers could be ready to take the plunge. You figure Jackson would move on and they'd look for a fresh start.

So the Knicks season should be about trying to obtain the pieces that could go a long way toward making the Lakers whole after dealing Bryant. A team never gets quite the value when trading a star of that magnitude, but you figure the Knicks could offer a good No. 1 pick as they may not make the playoffs. They probably keep Curry, which is not an issue as the Lakers have a future center in Andrew Bynum. The Knicks can offer Lee and Crawford, but they also need to go about finding a point guard since a deteriorating and often unstable Marbury wouldn't be of much interest. They have the money to throw into a deal and there also are opportunities to buy draft picks from other teams. They could take on a bad contract.

Javaris Crittenton is the real deal he might be only 19 yrs.old but he is a very mature NBA player and he already understand the principle of the Triangle Offense way back in his High School days. He might be the 3rd best PG in this years NBA Draft but he is the most clutch player as proven in his performance in the Summer League, as he lead his team in scoring and his 18 points 5/9 FG in his 1st NBA Pre Season Games vs. Baron Davis and the GS Warriors.

He is an excellent passer and a tall PG that can penetrate inside the lane; and also a great ball distributor in his HS and Collegiate teammates. JC also has an excellent jumpshoot from midrange and a very competitive player.

Phil Jackson must give him enough playing time this coming NBA Season because he is already a much better upgrade than Sophomore Jordan Farmar.

Crittenton takes a pass from Jordan Farmar and drains a jumper as time expires

Freshman Javaris Crittenton of Georgia Tech goes in the first round to the Los Angeles Lakers, 19th overall

                  High School Stats

                  Junior

                  28.4 points, 7.5 assists, and 8.2 rebounds

                  Senior

                  29 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds

                  College Stats

                  Freshmen

                  14.4 PPG, 5.8 APG, 2.0 SPG, 3.7 RPG

                  Summer League Stats

                  17.7 PPG, 2.40 RPG, 3.0 APG

                  NBA Pre Season Games

                  18 points, 5/9 FG, 7/7 F, 15.05 Minutes

If Crittenton would be given enough playing time, he might become the future of the Los Angeles Lakers and one of the best PG in the NBA. No need to trade for a 34 yrs.old Veteran like Jason Kidd because this Kid ( Javaris) has the potential to become the Lakers Backcourt General for many more years to come.

L.A. Lakers 126, Seattle 106, Kobe Bryant lead the Lakers vs. Durant and his Sonics

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Oct. 18 (AP) -- Kobe Bryant returned to the lineup and scored 20 points, 16 in the third quarter, to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 126-106 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Thursday night.

Bryant sat out the second and fourth quarters, but scored 12 straight for the Lakers in the third. He seemed to play to the pro-Lakers crowd, hitting a jumper with fans chanting "Kobe! Kobe!''

The Sonics had cut the Lakers' lead to five before Bryant's run, but after he dunked an alley-oop from Ronny Turiaf, Los Angeles was ahead 79-64.

Turiaf scored all of his 13 points in the first quarter for the Lakers, while Andrew Bynum added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who led 64-47 at the half.

Rookie Kevin Durant finished with 18 points and Chris Wilcox added 16. Seattle center Robert Swift returned to his hometown and scored seven points.

Andrew Bynum Dunk Over Robert Swift

I think Bynum would be a dominant center in the near future and it is not right if the LAKERS team would immediately trade him to some teams in the Eastern Conference. He is legit 7'1" just only turning 20 yrs.old this month, and he show some improvement during the Off Season and add some muscles to his body, which will be a huge factor if he is facing taller opponents like 7'5" Yao Ming and 6'9" Centers like Dwight Howard, who can literally destroyed him in the low posts.

I still keeping my finger cross that Bynum would create an impact in the Los Angeles Lakers roster during the Regular Season.

Face it, guys. The Lakers are a mess. And it's Kobe's fault. Kobe has been nothing but a whining baby for this franchise. He demands a trade, then takes it back, then demands it again. The owner says "OK, we could trade him," and Kobe starts crying again. This guy is a walking soap opera.

As for the rest of the Lakers, quite frankly, they don't have much. Lamar Odom and Vladimir Radmonovic are the only other players who could start on another team. Andrew Bynum, Luke Walton and Kwame Brown are push-overs. Derek Fisher is as slow as molassus. And Phil Jackson hates Vujacic. What more do they have?
High States Gamble? - By Andrian Worjankowski, Yahoo Sports

If it had been Dr. Jerry Buss' intention to resurrect Kobe Bryant's defiant act, to speed along the beginning of the end for the sport's biggest star in a Lakers uniform, he has done so in a dramatic way.

The owner has destroyed Los Angeles' leverage on a possible trade, delivering an unmistakable message to the Bulls and Mavericks: Don't bother throwing Luol Deng and Dirk Nowitzki in possible packages, because it's become clearer that a peaceful co-existence of Bryant and the fledgling Lakers is less and less likely.

For the good of his own image, one that he painstakingly tried to restore with Team USA over the summer, Bryant had come into training camp at least pretending that he was less miserable than usual. Buss couldn't help himself last week and started that talk all over again. To hell with peace, Buss was saying, I'm still the boss around here.

Never mind getting to opening night, the Lakers couldn't get to a preseason game in Bakersfield on Thursday without the old man fueling the fury of Bryant.

"If the plan was to keep Kobe and try to make this work, that probably wasn't the way to go about making that happen," one Western Conference executive said.

Maybe Buss was still livid enough with Bryant for calling him an "idiot" over the summer, but turning a peaceful training camp into a circus again because he wanted to tell everyone that he was willing to unload Bryant gave No. 24 a chance to re-cast himself as a victim, and check out of practice – if not his locker – for the week.

No, Phil Jackson didn't sound too convinced about the validity of those troubled knees that kept Bryant out of practice this week. As difficult as it is with Bryant, as much as the Lakers front office would love to call him on his hypocrisies and double-talk, Buss' Declaration of Independence only served to tear at the fabric of this franchise a little more.

Ultimately, Bryant owns a full no-trade clause and can make it clear that unless the Lakers can work a deal with one of his personal favorites, say, Chicago or Dallas, he can simply stay and become a bigger pain in the ass until they honor his trade wishes.

After GM Mitch Kupchak couldn't pry Dwyane Wade in the Shaquille O'Neal trade, how could the Lakers now justify working deals with Dallas or Chicago that don't include the best players on those teams, Nowitzki and Deng?

Even now, Kupchak doesn't have the best returning player from the Shaq trade in his employ, Caron Butler, because he somehow moved him to Washington for Kwame Brown.

Two league executives believe that the Bulls have been poking around this week, trying to get a sense of where internal matters truly stand between Bryant and the Lakers. Still, Chicago has been a model blueprint on constructing a contender through the draft and smart trades. As long as GM John Paxson has the sport's best-kept talent-evaluating secret, Gar Forman, on his front office staff, you can make the case that gutting this team for Bryant isn't the wisest route to a championship.

So far, they don't know if this core can become a champion. Maybe Dallas knows it can't win as currently constituted; after all, there's a body of evidence building that says so. What if the Bulls do trade away Deng, along with a Tyrus Thomas and a Thabo Sefolosha and Bryant does start to have serious trouble with those aging knees? The Celtics had no choice but to trade its young players for Kevin Garnett. They had nothing to lose. But the Bulls? If the Bulls re-sign Deng and Ben Gordon to extensions, they have a contender for the next decade.

For Paxson and his coach, Scott Skiles, they must consider their own personal survival as a rising star executive and coach. Eventually, Kobe comes for everyone. In his adult life, it is hard to find a relationship – personal or professional – that Bryant hasn't come close, or succeeded, in destroying. From his family, to his bosses, to his teammates, there's a frighteningly selfish streak of destruction.

To trade Bryant with two years left until he can opt out of the $88.6 million remaining on his Lakers contract, Buss has to consider this one business of basketball truth. In a perverse sort of way, the owner has a compelling reason to keep Bryant through the season and it's this: In L.A., where the dysfunction of Britney and Lindsay rules the day, this Real Hollywood Story isn't so bad for business. Jackson coached through unreal turmoil with the Bulls, and almost seems to revel in the twisted challenge of it all. But as he did say at the opening of training camp, those teams were winning championships and that made it so much easier.

Nevertheless, the Lakers can still wait for Kobe to opt out of his contract in two seasons, call his bluff on signing for less money with a cap-strapped contender, and get back some semblance of value in a sign-and-trade.

When the Lakers stood unflinching beside Bryant through his rape trial and coup on Shaq, the Lakers believed they had won Bryant's undying loyalty. How did he reward them? He threatened his bosses with a leap to the Clippers. The lesson was learned: Even if you're there for Kobe in his darkest hour, just understand that it carries no currency. The Lakers moved heaven and earth to make a draft day deal for him in 1996, gave him the most glorious stage in basketball, the greatest center and greatest coach of his time, and it's worth nothing to him.

Until this turn for the worst as a basketball operation, they did it all for Kobe Bryant. And yes, he has been a remarkable performer, a three-time champion who has never failed to bring out the beautiful people to the Staples Center. And over and over, the best chance for Bryant to leave the Lakers is still the Chicago Bulls. That gets him out of the West, and gets the Lakers the best possible package of players.

But between these two teams, their owners and executives, you have to wonder. What's ultimately the steeper price to pay for Kobe Bryant: Living with him, or without him?

He demands a trade, then takes it back, then demands it again. The owner says "OK, we could trade him," and Kobe starts crying again. This guy is a walking soap opera.

As for the rest of the Lakers, quite frankly, they don't have much. Lamar Odom and Vladimir Radmonovic are the only other players who could start on another team. Andrew Bynum, Luke Walton and Kwame Brown are push-overs. Derek Fisher is as slow as molassus. And Phil Jackson hates Vujacic. What more do they have?
On the other hand, remember, it's the Lakers. They will eventually find their way 2 the top again, with or without Bryant.Probably without him and when they get another big center.Who knows, maybe Greg Oden will sign 4 the Lakers in a few years
From the current players I disagree about Radmanovic,I never really liked him because I think he has a wrong mentality. He demanded 2 b a starter in the Serbian NT "because he plays in the NBA"!I also disagree a lot about Walton.Contrary 2 most players in this league, this guy plays bball with his mind and not with his body.Jackson likes him and I think he will have a good season.Bynum is still young, he could develop but needs 2 work.Brown is in competition with Michael Olowokandi 4 the worst top pick in the last 20 years!
Respect 4 Derek Fisher!I don't know if he is slow, I don't care so much, he has earnt the salary of his whole career with that buzzer-beater in San Antonio in 2004.And I suppose he was slow as well when he played 4 the Lakers of Shaq and Kobe, right?
The bad news is that Jackson is retiring after this season. So they better find a destination 4 Kobe next summer!

Yes, they will recover eventually. But I think the Lakers are going to enter the Draft Lottery Sweepstakes for the next few years, especially if Kobe leaves.

Yeah, I remember that. He's got a bad attitude, but he can still play the game pretty well. At least he could before he went snowboarding.

I still disagree. I don't think he's even a very good thinker for the game. What does he do that is so great? He's a good shooter, but his defense isn't that great, and he gets pushed around so much.

Well, OK, yeah, Fisher has been slow his whole career. Yeah, he'll be OK.
