Sam Mitchell: "I did not watch Eurobasket"

I'd like to revisit this topic of whether or not Sam Mitchell is "good" to his European players. In last night's Toronto loss to Washington, Mitchell's top 3 scorers were "European": Bargani, Calderon, and Delfino (he played in Europe, so according to us Yanks, he's a European). They were also the top 3 Raptors in minutes played. Last night's game was not a fluke. A Raptor games recently reveals that the Raptors top statistical players are the European players (with Parker, who fits our Yank definition of Euro, in there too). Bosh is still by far Toronto's top scorer, but the European players are getting plenty of minutes and plenty of good statistics.

I know that everyone was concerned about Garbajosa, whose minutes were very erratic earlier, but he was injured. In hindsight, was Mitchell right about Garbajosa? It appears that, yes, he was right about Garbajosa. And it also appears that all year, the European players have been excelling: Calderon is playing like an All-Star, Nesterovic is getting rebounds and playing great D, Bargnani is looking like the advertised draft pick, and Delfino is showing everyone the he could start on many NBA teams. And Parker, under Mitchell, has by far proven that he belongs in the NBA.

What do you guys think? Is Sam Mitchell still "against" European players?
"I really like the attitudes of eagles. They never give up. When they grab a fish or something else, they never let it go. It doesn't matter. In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

What are his alternatives? Colangelo gets him the players. He has to utilise them. And he can't just let Joey Graham and Derrick Martin play instead of Parker and Calderon.

I don't think he hates Euros. He just doesn't know how to use them. And the fact that Nesterovic gets so few minutes when both Bosh and Bargnani are fit is just horrible. Nesterovic is still great and the only player on the Raptors that brings some toughness. Nothing against Parker and Calderon ... excellent basketball players technically, but won't bring the dirtyness that this team imo needs. With Nesterovic logging only 5-15 minutes per game (I know he's playing more with Bosh out) and Garbajosa out for the season, this is really only a bunch of jumpshooters that won't make it deep in the postseason. Garbajosa was a key player to last years success imo. As was Rasho.

I agree with you about Rasho. Both Bargnani and Bosh are, frankly, "weak" players. I don't mean that in a bad way (I really don't!), but neither of them can take a whole lot of contact. Rasho is the opposite. He does much better when players are climbing on his shoulders, if you know what I mean. He's more like Charles Oakley than Peja Stojakovic.

          just a thought for consideration.
How to justify a system where Jason Kapono gets to shoot 14 3 pointers in 08' and Jamario Moon gets to shoot 56 of them in the same period?

In fact i agree quite a lot with Robbe, i wont say he's against europeans, but i still have the impression that he would like sometimes another kind of players, and that sometimes, for some reasons we probably dont know, he doesnt give the same opportunities to all the players (I couldnt agree more in the Rasho statement). But he has been smart enough to accept that the players he has are really good and he has found ways to make the team work pretty good (tough he sometimes commits huge mistakes, as he did in the last game against Washington for example), and thats somthing that also deserves some recognition.

For example if in the pre-season Colangelo would have asked him, what do u prefer, Delfino or D. Stevenson (for example), i really have many doubts about what could have been his answer.

And im sorry to look like some kind of conspiracies-addict here, but i still have some questions about the Garbo's issue in the first matches of the season, even if he was truly injuried.

Yes! That's exactly it. He's accepting his talent and he uses that talent very well.

I think you're probably right, Zyrus.

I don't know what was being said by Garbo to the Spanish media and so forth, so I can't really comment. It seems to me that Garbo was simply injured and couldn't play as well as he should be able to play.

Honestly, as I already posted some months ago, I think the reason Garbajosa was "injured" and had to have a suergery was that Toronto wanted to have the insurance money. Garbajosa was declared inactive a few days before the injury insuance ended and it was declared he had to have a surgery.

Now they are showing their true face and demand some money from the spanish basketball federation.

Note from the FEB (Spanish federation)

Watching the news appeared in the different mass media in relation to the supposed demand of the Toronto Raptors to the FEB for the claim of some quantities for Jorge Garbajosas's injury, this FEB wants to clarify:

                  1) At the date of today the FEB does not have any notification about the presentation of any demand against the FEB by Toronto Raptors

                  2) The FEB has expired scrupulously with the requirements that the franchise requested to the FEB signing the policy of the assurance wished by the Raptors and that was agreed last September 2, 2007.

                  3) Since the subscription of the mentioned policy, the FEB has not received any requirement for the payment of the quantitiesagreed in the policy, as it might not be otherwise, since the FEB already did the payment of the policy, not stemming any other type of obligations with the NBA team.

                  4) The FEB always will collaborate in the satisfactory resolution of the interests of the implied parts.

                  5) The FEB wishes the prompt recovery of the player Jorge Garbajosa as well as the biggest sports successes for him and for the Toronto Raptors.

                  6) Finally, in order not to affect the normal functioning of the events, the FEB will abstain from realizing more declarations.
