what do you guys think about this popular comparison of oden as the 'next duncan'? personally i think its just hype that media places in order to promote players. I don't think oden will average anywhere near as good as duncan's rookie season (20ppg, 9rb, 2 blocks if i remember correctly) despite him definitely having some 'duncan-like' attributes

If he stays healthy, he can be the next Bill Russell in defence, but IMO and having watched several games of him in HS and Ohio St, he lacks of weapons in offense. His movements are still a little bit rough, but he learned to use his left hand, that's very very important.
I think Portland did fine selecting him with the #1.

Forget Duncan
Looking at Dwight and Greg as the new "Shaqs", thats what Im talking about.
Shaq was almost unstoppable in his glory days, and thats what I want to see with these two."...I got the hand that will rock your craddle / cream you like cheese spread you on my bagel..." - Shaq

As much as i love G.O im afraid he wont become the ''Next Duncan'',you see when i watch him play he resembles the othe Twin Tower-David Robinson much more than he resembles Duncan.Greg Oden=Next David Robinson, now thats more like itZALIAI BALTAS

Don't see the comparrison. Duncan is widely considered the "greatest 4 of all time." Oden is far from even being close to a 4. Both are solid defensive players, but Duncan came into the league with much better fundamentals (except FT shooting). Oden is much much more athletic and a better shot blocker. Duncan's handle is much better and has a much more consistan mid-range jumper.
Oden has much potential. Despite his lack of O right now, he does have the potential to improve it. Right now though, he is maybe a more muscular Bill Russell.
I also don't see him having as much as an offensive output as Duncan had his rookie year (also doesn't have David Robinson to help).

I agree with the assessment that Oden is more of a Bill Russell - type of player right now. Defensively, he's a demon. One of a vanishing breed of seven-footers who actually play the center position well.
Offensively, he's performed nicely, considering that he had to learn how to shoot free throws with his left hand while recovering from wrist surgery. The kid's got potential on both ends of the court and I'm very excited about Portland's chances this season.Keep running, big boy.
