  • Discussion on Stephen Curry's Race -- is it wrong to ask?

We all recognize Steph’s spectacular shooting skills, his tight handles and underrated play making. We're familiar with Riley, Curry’s daughter and Dell, his former NBA playing-father. And we're well aware of Curry's record setting 402 threes in an NBA season and his Golden State Warrior's historic start and end to the 2015-16 regular season.

Yet what isn’t clear to the many people is whether Curry is mixed race. And if so, what is that mix? I’d venture to say that unless you’re African or Caribbean-American, you’re probably a little confused or curious about Curry’s racial identity.

Is Steph Curry White, Black, Mexican, maybe Haitian or Filipino?

In the large scheme of things, whether Curry is white, black, or mixed with another race doesn’t matter, but I know that it’s a question that many wonder when they see Steph’s (and his brother Seth’s) lighter skin color and hazel eyes.

When you type in “Stephen Curry is” or “Is Stephen Curry” into Google you’ll see that some of Google suggestions are people searching aout Curry’s race, ethnicity and background:

If you play around with the suggestions like I did, you’ll see a lot questions around Steph Curry’s background:

    • stephen curry ethnicity
    • is stephen curry black
    • stephen curry race
    • where is stephen curry from
    • is stephen curry half white
    • what nationality is stephen curry
    • stephen curry white
    • stephen curry mother ethnicity

Knowing that many were curious, I wanted to dig deeper into Steph’s racial background in part to answer the question (as there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information out there) but also in part to educate others about the complexities and layers that go into race/ethnicity. And I was sure I’d learn a thing or two along the way, too.

I created this thread because the post I wrote on Steph Curry's race on Interbasket has garnered a ton of comments -- some that were offended and questioned the motives of those that ask. And there were some that defended the curiosity and believe that it race can and should be discussed. For the most part, I understand both sides -- maybe not equally, but that's why it's woth discussing.

    Where do you stand?

His mother also has African American creole too so maybe not half white. So you do the composition and math to come up with his ethnic background.

Must be that touch of creole that enables him to hit the three. And I hear he makes a sensational shrimp jambalaya too!
