  • Lamar Odom to Play in China?

From media reports it is rumored that Lamar Odom is looking at the possibly to play in China for the 2013-14 CBA season. The CBA has become a popular destination outside of Europe for NBA players due to the short season and high pay that CBA teams offer. It seems also that NBA players want to play in China to expand their global brand. If Odom does take a serious look at playing in China he would follow the footsetps of other NBA players such as (to name a few):

    Steve Francis
    Stephon Marbury
    Gilbert Arenas
    Kenyon Martin
    Patty Mills
    Bonzi Wells
    Tracy McGrady
    Aaron Brooks

Also from media reports Odom has been battling a drug abuse problem which CBA teams would be aware of. This would lesson his chances of being picked up by a team in China. Last season was the first case of a player being kicked out of the league for drug use when Marcus Williams was tested positive for marijuana.

The past few years Odom has been viewed as being obsessed with wanting to be in Los Angeles that he would probably not want to leave Los Angeles or live outside the US.

Lamer Odom is looking at his options, but would a team in China choose him considering all the negative media attention he has received?

The volatile situation of Odom would dissuade CBA teams from signing him. Aside from that bad reputation, CBA teams I think require either a scorer or a walking double double for a bigman. Odom is no longer capable of that level. Maybe 2010 Odom but not 2013 Odom.

Good point about what CBA teams want in production from the import players. Odom would need to understand the situation from those that played in the CBA before him like Kenyon Martin. Martin didn’t adjust particularly well in China and had game averages of 14 Pts 7 Rebounds. His team the Xinjiang Flying Dragons wanted more for the $2.6 million the signed him for, although in the end he was only paid a prorated salary based on the 12 games he played.
