Logos placed on jerseys in NBA D-League playoffs

NEW YORK (AP) -- While the NBA studies putting sponsor logos on jerseys, the Development League is placing them on their teams' uniforms in the playoffs.
BBVA's logo will be featured across the back of all jerseys during the NBA D-League playoffs, the league announced Monday. It's the first time a marketing partner will have brand exposure on a D-League jersey other than adidas, the league's official outfitter.
BBVA, a financial service institution, is the presenting partner of the NBA D-League playoffs and finals.
NBA owners discussed placing sponsor logos on their jerseys during their meetings last week, but are just beginning the study and Commissioner David Stern said he doesn't expect to take any action next season.

Talks for D-League team went 'very well'

Without implying what might happen next, Ralston Mayor Don Groesser said Thursday that meetings with Denver Nuggets officials went "very, very well" amid talks of possibly bringing an NBA Development League team to the Ralston Sports and Event Center.

After attending the Denver-Detroit game Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center, Groesser said Nuggets officials told the Ralston contingent "not to comment on anything until we get some details firmed up."

"The last thing I'd say is we look forward to some great things happening," Groesser said.

Kurt Schwartzkopf, chief marketing officer for the Nuggets and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, did not return a call to The World-Herald.

It remains unclear whether Ralston is being considered for a new franchise or if another might be moved. The Nuggets currently are one of three teams affiliated with the Idaho Stampede, based in Boise.

Groesser also would not discuss any timeline regarding talks or decisions.

Ralston is pointing toward October for completion of its 3,500-seat arena at 72nd and Q Streets. The 2012-13 NBA Development League season would tip off in mid-November.

"At the end of the day," Groesser said, "we have a marvelous facility, a fabulous venue and a family venue."

Omaha has not had professional basketball since the Racers played their last of eight CBA seasons in 1996-97.

The D-League already has a strong local presence with teams based in Des Moines (Iowa Energy) and Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Skyforce). Midwest franchises also are in Tulsa, Okla. (Tulsa 66ers) and Bismarck, N.D. (Dakota Wizards).

Teams generally draw in the 2,000 to 4,000 range for games, although Iowa has averaged 4,513 for its five most recent home games at Wells Fargo Arena and broke its own league record by getting 14,036 for a playoff game last April.

According to the D-League website, the NBA has made 37 callups this season from D-League rosters.

Ralton could have an NBA D-League team in the near future.

Ralston pitches for NBA D-League team

Ralston's mayor and other city officials will travel Wednesday to Denver to pitch a plan to bring a development league team affiliated with professional basketball's Nuggets to the city's new arena.
Mayor Don Groesser said discussions to draw the development league team to the Ralston Sports and Event Center had been under way for as many as three months, and Nuggets officials asked the Ralston contingent to offer a presentation on the potential deal's finances.
It is not clear whether the Nuggets are considering other cities for its affiliate.
"I don't know of any," Groesser said.
The 3,500-seat arena is under construction near 72nd and Q Streets. It is scheduled to be completed in October.
The $32 million arena will be the home of the Omaha Lancers, a United States Hockey League franchise, and the Omaha Beef, an indoor football team.
The University of Nebraska at Omaha has signed a nonbinding letter of intent to lease the facility. It will be the home court for UNO men's basketball.
Joining Groesser on the trip is Curtis Webb, the arena's general manager, and its marketing director, Lynn Higginbotham. Walter Peffer, a city consultant on the arena, will also be in Denver.
