  • Is "Ray Ray" the best 3 point shooter in the history of the NBA?

Ray Allen is about to knock of Reggie as the player with the most made 3-pointers.
What makes this more special is the fact that "Ray Ray" did it in fewer shots, days and games.

Voted for YES. I watched Ray Allen when he was still the hotshot out of the Milwaukee Bucks.

He broke Reggie Miller's record, so that means something.

He is the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history... he [or will] break the record with least attempts and least games with better three-point percentage than Reggie.. Miller took 18 years while he did it in his 15th season.. and he got a ring!

I also concur that Ray Allen imo is the best 3 PT shooter in the history of the NBA... If Allen can stay healthy and play for another 3 seasons he has a shot at eventually making 3,000 3PT FG which would be a mind blowing feat... It's doable though

P.S: Steve Nash with his 43.1% 3PT FG and more than 1,500 3PT made is also up there with the best... he is one of the most accurate shooters in the history of the NBA (both for FT's and 3 PT's).

imo, miller is the better clutch 3 pt shooter.
memories of my childhood... 1998 eastern conference finals between the fabled chicago bulls and miller's pacers.
reggie miller was shooting 3's in jordan's face. then again it could just be my childhood fantasies.

I would argue that making the most 3-point field goals doesn't make one the greatest 3-point shooter. The percentage ways heavily into it, which I believe Ray Allen has a slight advantage.

For me, that's a tough call ... I'm thinking that Larry would be in par or even better than Reggie as a 3 pt clutch but then again how could I say that when Reggie has destroyed my Knicks of the 90s so many times in the clutch with his 3 pt shooting ...

He's the best 3 points shooter in the NBA. I still remember a young Ray Allen when he played for the Bucks. He was also a good in game dunker.

Drazen Petrovic is the best 3 point shooter that NBA has ever seen.

For me the best 3 point shooters in NBA history are:

                        Steve Kerr
                        Craig Hodges
                        Steve Nash
                        Ray Allen
                        Peja Stojakovic

Honorable Mention: Reggie Miller (probably the most overrated player in NBA history, but that's for another thread), Mark Price, Kyle Korver

Given his career trajectory I think Petrovic would have been on this list given his incredibly high 3 pt. %s the last couple of years he played in the NBA. However, it was such a short career I can't put him on my personal list.

Anthony Morrow could actually join this group if he keeps shooting how he has.

One other note on this, I think the great 3 pt shooters I have listed fall into two groups:
                        1) 3 pts specialists
                        2) all around players, players that bring many key skills to their teams

The specialists (Kerr, Hodges, Morrow, Korver, etc.) guys really only do that one thing for their team.

The guys in group 2 (Allen, Nash, Peja, Drazen, Reggie Miller, Mark Price) ere asked to do a lot more than just shoot 3s and in my book that should be taken into account when discussing the best 3 pt shooters of all time. For example, how often has Nash had to shoot an off balance three with the shot clock winding down because he is the primary ball handler? Similar situations have probably decreased season or career 3 pt %s for the second group of players but that doesn't make them worse 3 pt shooters.

So, given all that, I would probably give Nash the slight edge over Peja who I would put 2nd and Ray Allen 3rd.

Chauncey Billups too. I forgot to add him to my list.

Great post. I agree with your every word. Thank you for acknowledging Drazen. Lot of younger people have no idea how good Drazen was and what a great loss to basketball his death was.

Would you consider adding Jason Kapono to the list as well? (but definitely to the list of 3PT specialists and not overall shooters)

Nice list there by the way....I'm also glad to see that you also agree that Nash is one of the best 3PT shooters ever (not only in terms of percantage but also since he has been able to score this many 3PT FG as well)... By the way Nash is currently the best FT shooter in the history of the NBA (% wise speaking).
