  • The NBA's midseason awards

Gentlemen, we have reached the mid-way point of this exciting NBA season.

Who are your choices for the main NBA awards so far into this season?

    The NBA's midseason awards:

    Most Valuable Player

    Rookie of the Year

    Defensive Player of the Year

    Coach of the Year

    Sixth Man of the Year

    Most Improved Player

    Executive of the Year

    Here are my choices:

    Most Valuable Player:

LeBron James: To be able to win plenty of games with role players in a tough task but to win plenty of games with superstars is even tougher.

    Rookie of the Year:

Blake Griffin: Such an easy choice.

    Defensive Player of the Year:

Dwight Howard: Best Player on a Top Defensive Team.

    Coach of the Year:

Greg Popovich: Who would ever think that the Spurs would have the best record right now?

    Sixth Man of the Year:

Jason Terry: He's one of the major reasons why the Mavs are seen as title contenders.

    Most Improved Player:

Kevin Love: From a solid contributor to an All Star/ Best Rebounder in the NBA.

    Executive of the Year:

Pat Riley: To be able to get 3 superstars and have them be a title contender just demonstrates who how good an executive you are.

    Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose

    Voted for Rose

Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin

Griffin is miles ahead of every rookie

Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard

I'm rooting for him to win his third consecutive Defensive Player of the Year award.

Coach of the Year Gregg Popovich

He has the Spurs team playing well and everyone contributing, while limiting the minutes of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker.

Sixth Man of the Year Jason Terry

Always dependable off the bench to score for the Mavericks

    Most Improved Player Mike Beasley

If not Love, then it should be Beasley.

Executive of the Year Pat Riley

The moment Riley signed James, Wade and Bosh, he sealed the deal.

The MVP award is not as clear.. Main candidates are:
      1) Dirk. We can see what the Mavs can do with and without him (although, without Butler is still rather tough..)
      2) Rose. What a season he has been enjoying for such a young guy
      3) Gasol. Best player of the best team is not the team's star
      4) LeBron. Unbelievably effective after only a dozen games in the new team
      5) Dwight. See more on the DPoY
6-7) Ginobili-Rondo. The best players in the two teams with the best records. And maybe the best teams this season (my ranking has Celts 1st, Lakers 2nd, Spurs 3rd, Mavs 4th)
      8) Loooong shot, but Amare has been out of this planet this season
9-11) Durant-Wade-Kobe. They have to be here for obvious reasons. No chance for either in my opinion

      RoY: Griffin
      MIP: Love

For these two, no further comment. It's not even close

CoY: The Spurs should get an award, so most likely Popovich will win it. He has them playing amazingly good looking and effective ball, finally returning to form

DPoY: Dwight Howard. It is also likely that he will be among the MVP candidates if he continues performing so well, especially after the trade

6th Man: Lamar Odom. By the end of the season, he will have started in much less than 50% of the matches and he is enjoying a great season

I might be against the NBA (star system, hollywood, pop corn, rules, one-on-one etc.) but this doesn't mean that I don't recognize the following facts:
          1) It is by far the best (not exciting) basketball league in the world
          2) It is by far the most organized league in the world
          3) It is the only league that I know, where there are rules and they have to be kept, otherwise someone gets punished
          4) The NBA playoffs are going to be very exciting this season
          5) I have been watching NBA since I was 13 and I haven't missed a single boxscore since my first internet connection in 1995, so I am not planning to ruin this tradition

After mentioning all the above, I obviously remain a Euroball fan and NBA hater

You know if you change your mindset a little I'm sure someone will pay you a lot of money to do something related to NBA...

                          Most Valuable Player: Derrick Rose

Since we are still evaluating performances up to mid season I must say that Derrick Rose has been just awesome for the Bulls as well as for the Bulls being 3rd place in the East behind Boston and Miami and ahead of Orlando. And this is with both Noah and Boozer missing more than half of the games so far in the season...

Even though the Spurs and Celtics are both the best teams in each conference their results are more based on their team efforts..
Also to name Lebron would be taking away from what Wade and Bosh have contribute to the team since in many games while Lebron wasn't playing his best it was usually Wade picking up the slack and in a few games Bosh as well...

Rookie of the Year: Blake Griffin

Hands down to my main man Blake Griffin... Respect!

Defensive Player of the Year: Dwight Howard

The most dominant big man that is currently in the NBA.
Had Love been more of a shot blocker he would be a legitimate candidate for defensive player of the year as well (Posting a 30-30 (point-rebound) performance is mind blowing these days in the NBA))

Coach of the Year: Gregg Popovich

Awesome job by Popovich to help the Spurs have the 3rd best record in NBA history by mid-season...Another coach would have wanted to dismiss Jefferson from the team after such a dismal season last year but coach Popovich had faith in him and it showed.

Honorable mention goes to coach Mike D'Antoni with what he has been able to produce with the Knicks and how Amare has been the perfect fit for the team.

Sixth Man of the Year: Lamar Odom

                          Most Improved Player: Kevin Love

Kevin Love hands down and no questions asked ... What a turnaround it has been for him ever since he joined the U.S NT this past summer and I was very fortunate to see him playing live in the WC in Turkey..

Executive of the Year: Pat Riley

Since the Heat have transformed in the last 20+ games Pat Riley deserves this award or else it would have been bust of the year

Other executives worthy mentioning are Donnie Walsh for the Knicks and Gar Forman for the Bulls.
