      Research Notes

The Knicks won their 8th straight road game on Friday, the 2nd-longest such streak in franchise history. The team won 12 straight road games from Oct. 15, 1969-Dec. 10, 1969.
From Elias: A'mare Stoudemire had 11 turnovers, tying the Knicks record for most turnovers in a game. Micheal Ray Richardson had 11 on November 13, 1981 in a 95-85 loss at the Bucks. (Turnovers were first tracked in the 1977-78 season.)
Amar'e Stoudemire had a conflicted game Friday. He had 36 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in a 6-point Knicks win, but he also had 11 turnovers. Since 1990, Stoudemire is just the 4th player to have 30 pts, 10 reb, 5 ast and double-digit turnovers, and just the 2nd player to do it in a win.
From Elias: Amar'e Stoudemire gets his 7th 30-point, 10-rebound game in his 24-game run with the Knicks. He's just the 4th player since 1970-71 to have 7 30-10 games in his first 24 games with a team.
The Knicks have now won 7 straight. The last time they won 7 straight was December 22, 2000 through Jan. 7, 2001 back then... Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- The New York Knicks have their longest winning streak in nearly a decade, and Amare Stoudemire has the type of streak the franchise hasn't seen since 1962.
Stoudemire had 36 points and 10 rebounds to help overcome his 11 turnovers, and December's turnaround team won its seventh in a row Friday night, beating the Washington Wizards 101-95.

      Knicks Blog

Looking for more information on your Knicks? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog

With New York uber fan and movie director Spike Lee sitting next to Washington's bench -- wearing his Knicks jacket even though he was a guest of Wizards owner Ted Leonsis -- Stoudemire posted his seventh straight 30-point game. Willie Naulls is the only other player in franchise history with such a run -- and he accomplished it way back in 1962.
When Stoudemire scored his 30th point, on a hook shot with 4:58 to play, Lee stood up and raised both hands, clapped, then held up his left hand toward the crowd -- the only exuberant Knicks fan on the row where the high rollers sit. Stoudemire was serenaded with chants of "M-V-P!" by the heavy contingent of New York fans when he was shooting free throws a few minutes later.
In the final minute, after Stoudemire's 11th turnover -- a bad pass under the basket -- he raced downcourt and blocked from behind a layup attempt by speedy No. 1 overall pick John Wall, drawing more cries of "M-V-P!"
Stoudemire finished 13 for 24 from the field and 10 for 11 from the free throw line.
The Knicks have won 12 of 13, and the seven-game spurt is their longest since a run during Christmas and New Year's time in the 2000-01 season. New York has also won eight consecutive games away from Madison Square Garden, the second-longest road streak in team history.
The Knicks lead the NBA with 10 away wins, which is exactly 10 more than the Wizards have. Washington is 0-12 on the road, and the team's first game back from a West Coast road trip did little to change its fortunes.
Wall, returning after missing the last game of the trip with a sore foot, didn't look smooth with his shot and went 4 for 14 from the field and finished with eight points. Wall has missed seven of Washington's first 22 games with foot and knee injuries.
Gilbert Arenas scored 20 points to lead the Wizards.
All five Knicks starters scored in double figures. Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari both finished with 16.
The Knicks took the lead for good in the final minute of the third quarter and led by as many as 11 in the fourth and 95-86 with 2:50 to play, but the Wizards wouldn't go away. Two free throws by JaVale McGee, a spin move by Wall and a runner by Arenas cut the lead to three with 1:36 remaining.
But Stoudemire went 4 for 4 from the line over two possessions to get the lead back to seven, effectively ending Washington's comeback.
      Game notes
The teams combined for 36 turnovers, with New York holding the dubious 20-16 edge. ... Asked before the game if he hoped the Wizards would play well enough to keep Lee quiet, Wizards coach Flip Saunders said: "He's not going to see much of the game -- because I'm going to be standing right in front of him." ... It was alumni night for the Wizards, who honored 10 of the franchise's all-time top players at halftime. ... The Knicks have won five straight against the Wizards.

        Stoudemire's Milestone

New York Knickerbockers star Amare Stoudemire tied Willie Naulls for accomplishing 7 straight games with atleast 30 points as a Knicks player. The record was held by Naulls and stood from 1962 until today. Stoudemire can surpass Naulls' mark in Sunday when the Knicks play the Denver Nuggets.

          Willie Naulls

          From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Dean "Willie" Naulls (born October 7, 1934 in Dallas, Texas) is a retired American basketball player. A 6'6" power forward/center, he played professionally in the National Basketball Association from 1956 to 1966.
While attending San Pedro High School in San Pedro, California he was named as California Mr. Basketball in 1952.
After becoming an All-American[1][2][3] playing at UCLA, Naulls was drafted by the St. Louis Hawks in 1956. He spent just 19 games with the Hawks, however, before being traded to the New York Knicks, with whom he would spend the prime of his career. He averaged a double-double (19.3 points per game, 10. 7 rebounds per game) during his seven-year tenure with the team, and he appeared as an NBA All-Star four times. While with the Knicks, Naulls was also the first African-American player to be named captain of a major professional sports team.
During the 1962-63 NBA season, the Knicks traded Naulls to the San Francisco Warriors, who then traded Naulls to the Boston Celtics. Naulls would spend his last three professional seasons with the Celtics, winning three NBA Championship rings in the process. He was a member of the 1964-1965 Celtics team that was named one of the ten best teams in the NBA at the 50th anniversary of the association.[4] Upon retiring in 1966, he had tallied 11,305 career points and 6,508 career rebounds.
On February 24, 2005, Naulls, Campy Russell, and Kenny Walker were honored by the Knicks during their "Hardwood Classics Night."

Carmelo Anthony will only sign contract extension with the Knicks

After the game against the Denver Nuggets, the Carmelo Anthony to New York is on fire again.

Anthony quoted in a post-game interview:

"Everybody's yelling out the windows: 'Melo we need you in New York.' Of course that feels good when you know someone out there wants you to come and represent their team and represent their city. That's what I took from that."
                Source: Only Melo-to-Knicks seals offer

NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony has told the Denver Nuggets he will not sign the nearly $65 million contract extension he has been offered unless he is traded to the New York Knicks, a source told ESPN.com on Sunday.

The source, using the most definitive language possible, confirmed what has been widely speculated around the NBA over the past two months as Anthony has been at the center of trade talks involving numerous teams.

And while other franchises might be able to make better offers, Anthony will not agree to sign anywhere long-term unless he is dealt to New York, according to the source, who has been privy to private discussions between Anthony, his representatives and the Nuggets organization.

The source spoke to ESPN.com after Denver's 129-125 loss to New York on Sunday afternoon as the Knicks won their eighth straight game.

Anthony was again coy in discussing his future, but he did move the needle somewhat in making a prediction that the Nuggets will not trade him to a destination that is not on his wish list.

"I don't think so. I don't think that will happen," Anthony said.

Asked why he would make such a definitive statement, Anthony demurred "I don't want to answer that. I don't want to talk about that."

Anthony received a standing ovation from Knicks fans during player introductions after hearing their pleadings on the streets ever since the Nuggets arrived in Manhattan late Friday night.

"Everybody's yelling out the windows: 'Melo we need you in New York.' Of course that feels good when you know someone out there wants you to come and represent their team and represent their city. That's what I took from that," Anthony said.

The New Jersey Nets have been holding out hope that their offer of Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy and two No. 1 draft picks would be the best offer available to the Nuggets, but the news that Anthony will not agree to sign with them long-term effectively knocks them out of the bidding.

Anthony is under contract for the 2010-11 season at a salary of $17.14 million and holds a player option for $18.52 million in 2011-12. If he remains with Denver until the end of the season and exercises his early termination option, he would become an unrestricted free agent. Anthony has not publicly ruled out the possibility of staying with the Nuggets long-term, acknowledging only that he is weighing all his options.

Signing the extension would put him under contract through the 2014-15 season, and if the Knicks were to acquire him they'd pair him alongside Amar'e Stoudemire and fulfill the goal they've worked toward for more than two years:

Having two max-salary players as the cornerstones of their team.

"Whatever decision I make, that is going to be the first thing that gets done," Anthony said of signing the extension.

So the question now becomes more of a "when" than an "if."

The Knicks and Nuggets have discussed several variations of trades that would include Eddy Curry's expiring contract, Danilo Gallinari and other pieces, including a No. 1 pick the Knicks are confident they can acquire from a third team through a trade.

Denver also would have interest in Knicks rookie Landry Fields, who has started at shooting guard in all 25 games for the surging Knicks (16-9). New York also is known to have held trade discussions with several teams involving Wilson Chandler and Anthony Randolph, and some combination of the above-mentioned players would have to be agreed upon by the Knicks and Nuggets to make the deal happen sometime between now and the NBA trade deadline of Feb. 24.

"In my gut right now, I can't say. I don't know. With these things you never know," Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri said. "I'm still assessing the situation, still figuring out a lot of stuff. He's still here, and I'm sure everybody thought he was going to be gone in training camp. So it's promising that he's still here."

Stoudemire has scored at least 30 points in eight straight games, a team record, and New York has won 13 of 14 since losing at Denver in mid-November.

"When we played them in Denver the first time, they looked like a totally different team than right now," Anthony said. "They've got a lot of rhythm going out there, it seems like everyone's on the same page, and they're rolling right now."

Could you imagine Melo Man and Stoudemire teaming up?! OMG!!! That would be crazy!
I'm not saying that my beloved Knicks will be championship contenders but they sure would be a dark horse come the playoffs and a team that nobody would want to take on in the first round.

What an ending to the game !!! Pierce scored the winning jump shot at 0.4 seconds remaining. New York had one last chance left... The ball was passed to Stoudemire from out of bounds in 3 PT land and he made it!! Too bad it didn't count as it was just a few tenths of a second too late

Even in losing, Amar’e validates Knicks

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports Dec 16, 2:27 am EST

NEW YORK – Paul Pierce(notes) bowed to the boos tumbling down from beyond the dusty, old Knicks banners, smirked on his way to the locker room and blurted loudly to the brokenhearted building.
                              “They wanted it,” Pierce bellowed.
Here in New York, what they wanted was a rivalry again. Pierce smiled that cocksure Boston Celtics smile and yelled again on his way past the scorer’s table, past the fans starting to bundle to descend into a cold, New York night.
                              More From Adrian Wojnarowski

                              “THEY WANTED IT!”
They did want it here. The Knicks had gone and got good and muscled-up with free-agent talent. They’d gone on an eight-game winning streak, and they wanted the Celtics to see that an old rivalry could breathe again. In the end, Pierce had the final word on Wednesday night, a signature, step-back jump shot over Amar’e Stoudemire(notes) with .4 seconds left. This had been Stoudemire’s night, his season, and ultimately it was his 3-pointer a millisecond past the buzzer that spared the Celtics a March Madness moment at Madison Square Garden.
Stoudemire had destroyed the Celtics, gone for 39 points and 10 rebounds, only to be foiled when Pierce played that old Larry Bird game of leaving too little on the clock for a retaliatory dagger. This had been the most compelling night at the Garden in a long, long time, a 118-116 loss to the Celtics that left the Knicks as invigorated as it did devastated. For all of the Knicks’ impressive victories this season – 13 out of the past 14 on the way into Wednesday – they might have proven more in this loss to Boston.
Pierce had taken a lap to gloat, and now he was screaming to the people that these Knicks ought to be careful about wishing to renew a rivalry with the defending Eastern Conference champions. Pierce pretended like these Knicks were a fly flicked from his forearm, but that was something of a mocking act. The Knicks these Celtics once treated so shabbily – who had long stopped offering resistance – are gone now. Stoudemire changes everything for New York, and the specter of Carmelo Anthony(notes) – perhaps even the inevitability of the Denver Nuggets star – makes the Knicks a gathering storm in the Eastern Conference.
“I guarantee you that Boston respects us,” Stoudemire said.
For now, Stoudemire ought to understand this: The Celtics respect him. They know he’s responsible for grabbing this forlorn franchise and willing it out of rubble and into relevance. For it was nine months ago, some Celtics officials will tell you, that fates could’ve dramatically changed had the Cleveland Cavaliers made a deal for Stoudemire instead of Antawn Jamison(notes) at the trading deadline.
Would the Celtics have still won that series against the Cavaliers? When LeBron James(notes) bailed in Game 5, Cleveland would’ve had a power forward who’s been one of the NBA’s two or three most dominant players since the February trading deadline. The Celtics never had to defend Jamison, but this run of nine straight 30-point performances, the way that Stoudemire is scoring everywhere on the floor – no matter who is guarding him – has been remarkable.
Amar'e Stoudemire has scored at least 30 points in a Knicks-record nine straight games.

Beyond the evolution of his singular talent, Stoudemire has engaged New York in a way that has been startling. He wasn’t dying to play for Mike D’Antoni again, nor was D’Antoni dying to coach him. Yet coach and player needed each other again. Only the Knicks would guarantee Stoudemire a $100 million contract with those knees. Only Stoudemire would take the burden of resurrecting a forlorn Knicks franchise.
When New York teetered on implosion in the first weeks of the season, it was Stoudemire raging in that locker room against the Knicks giving into futility the way they had for so long. For all the belief that Steve Nash(notes) elevated Stoudemire’s game, Stoudemire’s showing now how much he meant to Nash.
“I’m proud of the way that I’ve developed,” Stoudemire would say in a private moment outside the Knicks’ locker room on Wednesday night. “I played with some great leaders in Phoenix, and maybe sometimes you get overlooked in that way. But to prove that I’m a franchise player now? No, I don’t have to prove anything. … I don’t have to prove that.”
Perhaps, but he’s done it, and the Celtics know that, too. They’re still grateful they didn’t have to see him in the Eastern Conference playoffs a year ago, but perhaps they won’t be so fortunate this time. Stoudemire had Miami and Chicago higher on his list of choices, because privately he felt about New York like a lot of players in free agency: Do I want to be the guy getting torn apart when they don’t get LeBron?
And yet, what became a union of convenience – perhaps even necessity – has blossomed into something that neither the Knicks, nor Stoudemire, believed could be such a perfect fit. Stoudemire has restored credibility to the franchise and gone a long way toward making it easier for the next star player to commit to New York. No one wanted to go it alone here, but Stoudemire made the leap of faith on the Knicks, the way that they made a leap with his knees.
The Celtics couldn’t help themselves, and taunted these Knicks, these fans, all the way out of the Garden on Wednesday night. They’ve won 11 straight games now, and they know the Knicks still need more than the greatness of Stoudemire to make a true run at them in the East.
“They test our defense,” Pierce said. “There are a couple of teams that test our defense and they’re one of them. … They’re playing great basketball.”
Mostly, Stoudemire tests them. No one on the Celtics could stop him, and they were fortunate to keep him under 40 points, to get out of New York with a victory. Stoudemire is a monster, and, yes, there’s a gathering storm in the distance that could change everything here. Near the freight elevator late Wednesday, one of the Celtics coaches turned and asked a final question before the doors shut and the staff slipped into the cold, New York night with a steal of a victory.
“Hey,” he said. “Do you think they’ll get Carmelo?”
