Report: Wizards' Javale McGee interested in playing for Philippines

Wizards center JaVale McGee has visited the Philippines twice in the last four months and expressed willingness to be part of the national team at the next FIBA Asia championship, according to The Philippine Star.

McGee, according to the report, is eligible to play for any country because he has never played for the U.S. national team. He has, however, taken part in minicamps with the team.

It would take McGee becoming a "naturalized player" to compete for the Philippines' team. The Star report says that McGee will follow the course of Marcus Douthit, who got that designation through an act of Filipino Congress sponsored by a representative.

“If ever, we will have a taller, younger naturalized player to match up with Hamed Haddadi, Yi Jianglian and the like,” a source within the Filipino team told the Star.

McGee, 23, enjoyed a breakout season in 2010-11, averaging 10.1 points, eight rebounds and finishing second overall both in block shots (2.4) and the slam dunk contest.

The Philippines is trying to qualify for the 2014 World Championships.

If I remember it right, the Philippines still has Marcus Douthit as the naturalized player. Will the SBP replace Douthit after one tourney?

I don't think so, but for our future aspirations, McGee will surely be a good fit-he's young and more agile than Marcus!

I see, thanks for explaining. It makes more sense to me now. While Douthit is still serviceable, the SBP (Philippine National Basketball Federation) is already making a groundwork for future tourneys with the naturalization project of McGee.

                    I think.
