Suns' Childress breaks finger against Warriors

PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix Suns forward Josh Childress broke his right index finger in Tuesday night's exhibition victory over the Golden State Warriors.

The Suns say Childress will have no basketball activity for a week, then will be re-evaluated. He was injured when he was fouled on a drive to the basket with 7:54 left in the game. He left the contest but returned with 5:39 to go and played the rest of the way.

The Suns acquired the rights to Childress in an offseason sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks. Childress played the last two seasons in Greece after a contract dispute with the Hawks. The former Stanford star was the sixth pick overall in the 2004 draft.

Heat's Miller to see hand surgeon for right thumb injury

MIAMI (AP) -- A freak injury to Mike Miller's right thumb is expected to keep one of the NBA's top 3-point shooters sidelined for several weeks, yet another blow to the injury-prone Miami Heat.

Miller was injured when the thumb on his shooting hand got tangled in a teammate's jersey during practice Wednesday. The Heat have not revealed a formal diagnosis or possible recovery time.

Coach Erik Spoelstra said before Thursday night's preseason game in Atlanta that MRI results on Miller's thumb were not yet available.

LeBron James said he talked with Miller, who is disappointed.

"He's down," James said Thursday night. "Of course he is. This is an exciting season. It's an exciting season for himself. When you work out a lot in the offseason and get prepared for the regular season, and you have a freak accident happen like that, he's down. You really can't understand what he's going through right now."

James said he is optimistic Miller will return for the majority of the season.

"We know how important Mike is to this team, but he's going to have an opportunity to get some rest, get his body healed up and he'll be back for the long run," James said.

Miller is not on the trip with the Heat, a swing that concludes with the preseason finale in Tampa, Fla. on Friday against Orlando. His injury is expected to be reviewed by hand surgeon Dr. Andrew Weiland, a New York-based specialist who regularly treats professional athletes.

Miller had been starting at shooting guard during the preseason in place of Dwyane Wade, who has missed all but the first 3:17 of the exhibition schedule with a strained right hamstring. Miller was averaging 9.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 24.4 preseason minutes per game with Miami.

Wade, who has also been dealing with a trial that'll decide custody of his two young sons, is expected to resume working out with teammates on Sunday - just two days before Miami opens the regular season in Boston. He's expected to be in Tampa for the preseason finale against the Magic, but will not play.

Oddly, there was a slew of good news for the Heat on injury fronts Thursday. Guards Mario Chalmers (ankle) and Eddie House (shoulder) were deemed healthy enough to play against the Hawks, and Wade has been cleared for full contact drills, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

But the Miller situation may overshadow all that news.

Miller signed a $25 million, five-year contract with Miami this summer. He was the NBA's second-best shooter from 3-point range - 48 percent - last season and came to the Heat in large part because of the opportunities he could get playing alongside Wade, James and Chris Bosh.

"It's unfortunate," James said. "Like Coach Spoe said, no one said it was going to be easy and no one said we weren't going to have adversity throughout the season. I mean, when you have injuries, the best thing about it is you have an opportunity for someone to step up."

For his career, Miller has averaged 13.7 points on 46 percent shooting, 41 percent shooting from 3-point range.

With Miller sidelined, the Heat will likely use James Jones - another top 3-point shooter - even more at small forward than perhaps originally planned.

Wolves' Webster has MRI on back, will miss preseason finale

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Martell Webster will travel to Milwaukee for the preseason finale because of a back injury.

The team says Webster had an MRI and they are awaiting the results of a second opinion before they make a diagnosis.

Webster says he was injured in the playoffs last year with Portland. Coach Kurt Rambis said after practice on Thursday that there is more concern now after things didn't improve in the last day or two.

Webster is averaging 12.3 points per game in the preseason. He did not play against Indiana on Tuesday.

The Timberwolves open the regular season next Wednesday against the Sacramento Kings.

Arenas could miss Wizards opener with sore ankle

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Gilbert Arenas still has a sore right ankle and could miss the Washington Wizards' season opener.

Arenas sat out practice for the second straight day Monday. Coach Flip Saunders said the ankle has some fluid buildup and the team will have to "wait to see how it is" ahead of Thursday's opener at Orlando.

Arenas sprained the ankle during training camp, then later missed two preseason games with a strained right groin. He also missed a game when he faked a knee injury, drawing a fine from the team.

Saunders said he'd like to have Arenas, but the team has played a lot without the former three-time All-Star and can be effective without him.

Arenas is attempting a comeback after last season's 50-game suspension for a felony gun conviction.

Randolph lands hard on back, leaves Grizzlies opener
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph left the season opener against the Atlanta Hawks after taking a hard fall on his lower back.

Randolph went up for a short shot in the paint when he was undercut by a stumbling Al Horford of the Hawks with 8:33 left in the first quarter.

Randolph, an All-Star last season, fell hard on his right lower back. He limped off the court during a timeout, then returned to make two free throws.

But he struggled down the court on defense and asked to be taken out with 8 minutes left in the quarter. He walked to the locker room with medical staff.

He came back into the game and scored four points on 1-of-6 shooting, but he appeared to have trouble jumping for shots and rebounds. He did not return for the second half and was replaced in the lineup by Sam Young. The Grizzlies said Randolph had a lower back contusion.

Groin injury keeps Cavs' Williams out of opener

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Cavaliers guard Mo Williams will miss the season opener against Boston as he continues to recover from a groin injury.

Williams was sidelined for most of training camp with the injury, which he suffered in a workout in the week ahead of the Cavs opening camp.

Ramon Sessions will start in place of Williams, who was recently excused for five days to attend his father-in-law's funeral in Mississippi. He rejoined the team on Tuesday.

Cavs coach Byron Scott said the team will err on the side of being overly cautious with Williams early in the season.

Cleveland needs Williams to pick up the scoring load following the departure of LeBron James. Williams averaged 15.8 points last season, second on the team to James.

Warriors' Curry leaves game after re-injuring ankle

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Golden State guard Stephen Curry has left the Warriors' game against the Los Angeles Clippers after re-injuring his right ankle.

Curry was hurt while trying to get around a pick set by Blake Griffin with 6:03 left in the third quarter. He rolled his right foot and immediately fell to the floor in pain. When play was halted trainers rushed out to Curry, who lay on the court for several moments while surrounded by teammates and coach Keith Smart.

He eventually was helped to his feet and limped slowly off the court Friday night.

It's the same ankle that Curry hurt in the preseason and aggravated in Golden State's 132-128 season-opening win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Hope he recovers back real soon

Hawks' Williams (knee) to miss at least one game

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta Hawks forward Marvin Williams has only a bone bruise on his right knee, tests revealed Thursday, and might miss only one game.

Team spokesman Arthur Triche said Thursday that Williams is listed as day to day.

Williams did not travel with the team for Friday night's game at Minnesota after injuring his right knee Wednesday night in a win over Detroit. He left the game in the fourth quarter after landing hard on his right knee in a battle with Greg Monroe for a loose ball.

There were concerns Williams might have had a more serious injury.

Williams, the Hawks' starting small forward, is averaging 10.8 points and 6.0 rebounds.

The Hawks also are expected to be without Williams' top backup, Maurice Evans, against Minnesota. Evans has missed four straight games with a right knee injury.

Guard Jamal Crawford, who missed the Detroit game with a turf toe injury, is making the trip to Minnesota. His status for the game is uncertain.
