    • A case of so much things to do for the Milwaukee Bucks wherein the roster will need to be addressed this off-season but the Lockout prevents any roster movement.

If the lockout ends during the time of the season, expect a mad scramble for players including the Bucks.

Bucks' plans on hold during lockout

The Milwaukee Bucks are in a holding pattern while waiting for the lockout to be resolved, and there's still plenty of uncertainty about whether the pro basketball season will start on schedule.

It's getting to be crunch time as the players union and league owners try to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement. Already the start of training camp has been postponed and exhibition games through Oct. 15 have been canceled.

Meanwhile, the state's other sports teams are on a roll. The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers are 3-0, the Milwaukee Brewers are headed to the baseball playoffs and the Wisconsin football team is unbeaten.

"I've never heard of those teams," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said with a wry smile Monday at the team's annual golf outing at Ozaukee Country Club. "No, we know the situation.

"The Packers are like a machine. Very few teams get that good where they just go about their business, and it's very difficult to contain them. The Brewers are having a great year, and Wisconsin . . . we want those teams to do well.

"But it puts the pressure on us to step up in this market and do something for ourselves."

The Bucks endured a disappointing season in Skiles' third year in charge, as they slipped from a 2010 playoff appearance and a 46-36 finish to a shaky 35-47 record.

Changes were sure to come, and general manager John Hammond wasted no time on draft day in June. He traded veterans Corey Maggette to Charlotte and John Salmons to Sacramento as part of a three-team deal, while acquiring 6-foot-7 guard Stephen Jackson and point guard Shaun Livingston from the Bobcats and combo guard Beno Udrih from the Kings.

"We had two factors (last season), the injuries and our fit," Hammond said. "It didn't work the way we would like it to, and I think we've rectified that.

"I think maybe (former Golden State coach) Al Attles said years ago, 'Chemistry is one of those things that you don't know how you got it, and you don't know how you lost it when it's gone.'

"Once we do begin, I think our team will fit well together."

A shortened training camp could be a concern for the Bucks, who have players spread out around the globe, from Andrew Bogut in Australia to Carlos Delfino in Argentina to Brandon Jennings, who has spent time in Los Angeles and Baltimore.

"It would be wise to have more than one plan right now, and we will," Skiles said.

When the last lockout occurred in the 1998-'99 season, part of the season was lost and a 50-game schedule was squeezed into three months. The shorter season resulted in a nightmarish schedule that both sides would not like to repeat.

The owners and players union are still at odds over the division of basketball-related income: The players received 57% in the last agreement. In negotiations the players have offered to reduce their percentage to as much as 54%.

A hard salary cap also is one of the sticking points, with the owners saying it is needed for competitive balance and the players saying they will not accept such a structure because it will lead to the end of long-term, guaranteed contracts.

Asked if the lockout has made planning difficult, Skiles said, "It's part of the business. It does happen.

"We just have to focus on what we're trying to do and the improvement of our team. We feel like we're doing that. Nothing has changed for us yet."

The golf portion of the annual event was postponed by the weekend's heavy rains, but the Bucks still had a strong turnout of alumni.

Among those attending were former Bucks coach Don Nelson, newly hired assistant Sidney Moncrief, Junior Bridgeman, Brian Winters, Bob Lanier, Bobby Dandridge, Fred Roberts, Quinn Buckner and former radio play-by-play announcer Eddie Doucette.
