    Darius Miles

Darius Miles is set to play for the Charlotte Bobcats in the Summer League.

There are miles and miles on Darius Miles, and the Charlotte Bobcats are still determining what his knees have left.

Miles is easily the most accomplished player trying out for the Bobcats this summer. The third pick in the 2000 draft, he has a serious resume as a 6-9 NBA forward.

Resume isn’t the issue. It’s his health. He’s attempting to come back from a knee injury so severe the league once defined it career-ending. The Bobcats have practiced twice a day here, preparing for five games at Orlando’s summer league. Miles is limited to one practice by his doctors, and was told to take every third day off.

Much of the time he’s watching, both knees wrapped in ice bags. Miles won’t play in summer-league games that start Monday.

When he does participate, you can see he’s still effective at any of three front-court positions. He filled in at center Friday, matched against 7-footer Alexis Ajinca in a scrimmage.

He’s lost some explosion, but his savvy was apparent.

"If you’ve got experience in the NBA, even if you haven’t been playing, you absorb things by watching. Darius is just a smarter player" than most here, said Dave Hanners, the assistant running the Bobcats’ summer team.

"He’s still got unbelievable feel for the game. He’s still got a lot of his quickness. He doesn’t quite have the leaping ability he did at one time. It’s a work-in-progress."

Reigniting Miles’ career would be a classic Larry Brown move. The Bobcats coach (who missed these practices due to a previously-scheduled family vacation) loves to fill out his bench with veterans. Theo Ratliff and Larry Hughes were there for the stretch run of the Bobcats’ first playoff season.

With a top-heavy payroll already, the Bobcats will need to fill out their roster with several minimum-salary players. Miles’ versatility and experience would be valuable if he can still get through a season, something he hasn’t done since 2006.

Miles said his practice limitations here are a precaution, insisting the worst of his knee problems are well behind him.

"I’ve got my quickness back. I can stop-and-go when I want to," he described. "When you have knee surgery, sometimes the knee will be stiff and you can’t run and stop in certain ways. You can’t spin, you can’t play defense.

"Now, since I’m healthy, I have no limits."

No limits in what he does, but still limits in how often he does it. That’s made it tough to evaluate what he has left.

"You’ve got to have a player who can practice every day and play every day," Hanners said. "Right now, that’s a problem to me. I don’t know at what point the doctors will release him to practice all the time."

Not now, but hopefully in the fall, if the Bobcats bring Miles to training camp.

"Hopefully by October, I’ll be in great basketball shape," Miles said, "and give them something that they need."

Look, don't get your hopes up Batista55, Sun Yue and Jeremy Lin only might make it into the NBA, and only if they are athletic enough. Height alone, even though Sun Yue is 6'9" does not make him a good NBA player. We all know that. Just because they are playingt in Las Vegas Summer League does NOT mean they are a guaranteed LOCK to make it into the NBA.

Stop being so arrogant and assuming anything. You don't know what will happen next, and neither does anyone else.
