Where does the Celtics - Lakers Rivalry rank in World Sports?

I don't know anything about soccer or baseball rivalries, so, for me, this is probably one of the biggest rivalries in sports, although I hate both the Lakers and the Celtics.

The problem with NBA rivalries is that they play too often. Each team plays at least twice a year and players move so often from team to team that the competitive edge becomes somewhat dull.

My opinion ...

Personally, I see the rivalry outside the top 10.

The tradition, history, intensity and obsession in other rivalries that I have seen in football (the real one), especially in South America by far out weighs the rivalry of the Celtics-Lakers.

My personal favourites:

1. Nacional vs Penarol (Uruguay)
2. Real Madrid vs Barcelona (Spain)
3. River Plate vs Boca Juniors (Argentina)
4. Club America vs Chivas (Mexico)
5. Universidad de Chile vs Colo Colo (Chile)

rugby 7's last a couple of minutes and is not in there either. Besides a Cricket Twenty20 game can be completed in about three (some sports last more than that and are still in)

@ the one who posted the video of the yankees - red sox rivalry to prove it is bigger than anything: in many euro derbies fans of opposite teams are not allowed to be sitting in the same stands. In 90% of the times rival fans are not even allowed in the stadium of the home team.

Greek derbies between panathinaikos and olympiacos in basketball are being watched by 3k fans of each team (if it's a final) and 5k police special forces. Last year in berlin some 3k robocop-like police special forces were needed to keep pao and oly fans apart in the euroleague f4.

of course. i don't disagree with that. and i don't like hooliganism. it was just an example to disprove that american rivalries can be compared to (some) european ones. i don't approve nor do i like the situation.

i agree. while i love watching lakers and celtics there's at least 20-30 better and more passionate rivalries in europe alone (partizan vs. red star anyone?)
