  • Atlanta Hawks...worst 3 seed ever?

I've been watching the NBA playoffs for over 20 years, and I can't remember a team that's a worst three seed than this Hawks squad. I saw absolutely no sense of purpose and motivation in their play tonight. Orlando is a good team, but the margin they beat Atlanta by makes them look like the 92 Bulls...and those Bulls would probably kill this Magic team by an ave. of 20 in four game sweep. Tonight's result is an indictment on two levels; first the players for showing no heart and then secondly the coaching staff for putting together a offensive and defensive gameplan that most high school teams could figure out. Coach Woodson runs probably the worst offensive sets in the league (basically either a predictable high pick & roll or individual isolation plays), and his teams' defense is not much better. I'm a Hawks fan, and it's embarassing to witness this garbage they think is basketball.

Come on, they are facing a better team. The worst 3 seed ever wouldn't even be in the 2nd round. Like I said in the other thread they probably are too tired compared to Orlando who rested for a week.

I think the Denver Nuggets in 2005-2006 that lost in the 1st round 1-4 to the friggin' Clippers are the worst 3rd seed ever

The Hawks are an erratic team. In 08 they pushed the eventual NBA Champions the Boston Celtics to 7 and expectations were high for the next season. However, the following playoffs, they got swept by Cleveland.

Magic fans are happy that they can have a tune up team to get their team in tip-top shape for whomever comes out of the Celtics / Cavaliers series.

Dude, I would bet my house that that 05/06 Nuggets team could beat this Hawks team in a seven game series, and that's saying a lot given how pathetic that team played against the Clips. It's not just the fact that they were soundly beaten by a good Orlando team (by no means great, historically speaking) but it's how they lost: unmotivated, poor execution, and terrible coaching. They just barely got past an undermanned Milwaukee Bucks team in seven games, so I expected a serious leap in the competition level but I wasn't thinking going into this game a total meltdown by the Hawks.

This team represents all the worst basketball habits the NBA gets criticized for by purest; one-on-one isolation plays, predictable pick & rolls, and the erratic jacking up three point shots, not to mention awful team defense.

Sure, fatigue certainly plays a role, but a professional basketball team with the third best record in the East getting drummed by 43 points? Worst defeat in team playoff history (since moving to Atlanta), and one of the worst in post-season history, and that's suppose to be brushed aside as a bad night?

Even though the Hawks got annihilated in game 1, this could be a blessing in disguise for them since this could backfire in game 2 and the Hawks might put up a descent fight (even though I still believe this series will end at 4-0 or 4-1 for the Magic).
Evan Stan Van Gundy acknowledged that the Magic should completely forget about this win and not let if affect his players.
This is what he had to say:
“I told them that I will have for them virtually every time in NBA playoff history that a team had a blowout win, came back and lost the next game,” Van Gundy said. “You’ve got to forget what happened.”

Yes. Losing by 1 and losing by 50 is the same in regards to the playoff hopes. It's may be inexcusable to the fans, but from a playoff standpoint it's understandable to stop fighting when, frankly, there was no chance of winning. I did not watch the game like you did, but I sense maybe that you are over-reacting considering you are their fan. One game cannot judge a team completely.

That said, I also see Orlando rolling through Atlanta in this series.

the thing about Atlanta is that they have 5 good players and an above average one (Mike Bibby) , whereas in Orlando you have guys at the end of the bench who could be easily starting in a different team/situation.

all these guys could start in a different team:
                Ryan Anderson
                Matt Barnes
                Brandon Bass
                Marcin Gortat
                Mickael Pietrus

and Jason Williams was the starting point guard of a championship team just a few year ago.

people say that Defense wins Championships, but what we most of the time forget is that most starters are starting because of their offensive skills not particularly their defense (e.g. Kevin Durant), The Bench is the one generally brought to play defense when it matters. And Atlanta doesn't have that. Orlando Bench alone could easily make a good Starting Lineup.

that said, Atlanta needs 2 things:
First: get a Strong Center, Horford and J. Smith need to play their natural position if they really want to be a serious championship contender (needless to say, Williams should (and rightfully so) be heading to the bench )

Second: Get a PASSING-FIRST (though a PASSING-ONLY wouldn't be bad either) point guard. Bibby is no starting material anymore.

ya thats exactly what i thought 2day . Atlanta looks like a team who has preparing for a while and the best they can do right now is get to the 2nd round and barely . they won 4-3 last year to miami before getting swept by the cavs and they won 4-3 this year against the bucks even though i think the bucks would have won if it werent for boguts injury and i have a feeling they will lose in 4 or 5 against the magic(much better series if bogut was healthy and it was miluakee and orlando) . I have a feeling joe johnson will leave next year maybe to miami or chicago .

To this day, I can't believe they passed up on Chris Paul back on the 05 draft.

Atlanta was beaten by an ave. of 25 ppg, the highest margin of victory in a four game sweep in NBA history. Pretty much affirms why I suggested this is the worst 3 seed (or any seed) ever. Pathetic.

Well but let's not also forget the Magic could actually get the title. They're coming pretty strong.

Atlanta might not be the worst 3 seed in terms of talent, but in terms of heart they have to be up there. They never showed up for this series, they couldn't even be asked to try for their fans. The Bobcats who were much more overmanned compared to the Hawks at least put up a fight.
