  • Jerry Sloan is very limited

We all hear how good jerry sloan is good and i have to admit that his systems are very good and consistent which is why utah jazz make it to the playoffs and win atleast 50 games every year but i have always wondered why is he so limited . Why doesnt he ever bring a 7 footer as a center they have had huge matchup problems in terms of height against the lakers and spurs in these last few years and probably will have a problem in this next week against the lakers . Today Fessenko the 7'2'' center had a very good game clogging the middle against the nuggets the only reason sloan played him is cuz okur is injured . I think for these few coming years he should concentrate on bringing a new center and one who plays his whole game inside not like okur . For next week even if okur is healthy the jazz have a better chance matching up with the lakers playing fessenko . Andre aldridge wonders why sloan never won coach of the year in 20 years even though they have a very good team every year and here is one example but I dont expect more from sloan since he grew up as a farmer with 10 brothers . I think his team always does well cuz he pushes them and their ass is grass if they dont play well but I dont think the jazz will ever win a championship with him as a coach cuz what we see now is his full potential . He is not smart enough to bring a center even though year in and year out they lose in the playoffs cuz of their weakness under the basket

Sloan is one of those coaches that tends to overlook size and heft along with their projected advantages in favor of the fluidity of running his game as he in truth is very demanding in roles that he assigns to a player within their playing position and when he finds a player not suited for his ideal role, that player usually gets relegated to a 10th or 12th man role.

I think the only center who flourished under his system was Greg Ostertag.

Karim, I think Sloan is a pretty good coach, although I with you when you question

As far as Fesenko goes, it's tough to play 5 minutes a night all year and then 30 minutes a night in the playoffs. That's hard.

I always thought Ostertag was a pretty good player, especially defensively, but he never really had it going on offense.

Now, in Sloan's defense, he's always had very good players outside the center position: Stockton, Malone, Hornacek, Russell, Deron Williams, Boozer, Okur, Kirilenko...and both Malone and Boozer might be considered "high post centers," so...I don't know.

In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

First off, I don't think anyone can compete with the Lakers size. The Jazz are not the only one's with that problem. A lot of organizations will actually over-draft and over-sign big fellas who cannot chew gum and run at the same time.

Sloan is one of those guys that is going to take skill, hard work, and smarts anyday over a "project." Show me more than ten "true" centers in the league.

It's not that Sloan hates big guys, it's just that they're a dime a dozen.

what is happening to them against the lakers now is ridiculous . bynum, gasol and even odom had a double double in game 2 and when jerry sloan is asked about their disadvantage in size he says thats life and that the lakers are like when some1 puts ur head in the dust and than puts his foot over ur head and starts pushing it on the sand this isnt a wrestling game sloan just get a center and it,ll work out 4 u . The cavs traded for shaq to deal with howard this is an example of teams making trades to deal better with the teams they face regularly . The jazz have been facing the spurs and the lakers over the last 4 years and have lost to them cuz of size time . Next year its time to make a change and if sloan is too limited for that boozer should leave and probably sloan would put kirilienko on the 4 rather than get a big power forward since sloan picks talent and hardwork over size I think he should try mixing size with hardwork and talent this shouldnt really be a black or white problem its not either this or that he can actually have both

I must agree that the Jazz has a great deficiency on the size department towards the towers of the Lakers but to be fair with Sloan on the demands of getting someone named Brook Lopez or other productive big men; that's not really his job. That's the job of the GM and Sloan just coaches and whatever the Jazz organization had put up as a roster, Sloan just does his job, coaches the team and makes do of what is available. Since 1989, Sloan never had any public clamor of demanding the organization in terms of personnel addition.

Maybe that's Sloan's secret in keeping a coaching job. Much like Alex Ferguson.
