  • Bobby Hurley

This is a thread dedicated to Bobby Hurley.

Though the guy didn't do very well in the NBA, he had an extroadinary 4 years with Duke in the NCAA leading the team to back to back championships, a 1991-92 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, a 2 time All American, averages of 12ppg, 8apg ('92-'93: 17ppg 8apg).

My question to everyone is what type of player do you think that he would have turned into if he didn't have that horrendous crash?

If he didn't have that crash, was his style of play suited for the much more athletic NBA?

Was he just in a bad franchise (Sacramento Kings)?

I didn't notice him much in the NBA, but a few years ago I decided to watch some old NCAA Championship games on YouTube. I watched the 1992 NCAA Finals and I was amazed at the abilites, skills and leadership of Bobby Hurley. Sure enough he was coached by probably the greatest NCAA coach in Coach K and had on his team one of the top 10 NCAA Players of All Time in Christian Laettner but Hurley was still "The Floor General!"

I think he would have been a very good point guard. He could've been up there with Rod Strickland, Tim Hardaway, and guys like that.

I don't know. I've only seen two or three games from his championship NCAA seasons. I think most players could be a good fit if they're that good.

That was a big part of it, I'm sure. The best player he ever played with was Mitch Richmond (who was very good), but Hurley was never the same after his car accident. I think he had a few pretty good games, but never anything spectacular after the accident. That's at least what I remember.

In a book, they write they find a skeleton of [an] eagle and there is no fish. It means that the fish beat him and killed him, but he didn't let go." -- Donatas Motiejunas

Bobby Hurley was a fundamentally sound guard. He was drawing comparison to Mark Price and John Stockton according to Sports Illustrated articles those days. I bet he would have been a solid starter for the Sacramento Kings had if not that horrible car accident.

I read somewhere that Nolan Smith is looking up to him and DUKE Blue Devils followers refer to him and JJ Redick as one of the original "Handsome Blue Devils"

However, the tragic car crash early in his NBA career undeniably altered his trajectory. While his skills and basketball IQ were elite, questions remain about whether his game could have fully translated to the athleticism and pace of the NBA at the time. His size and physicality may have been a challenge, but his passing and court sense could have made him an exceptional playmaker on the right team. Could you analyze some press release for new hires to show what works best in today's media landscape?

It's tough to say for sure, but based on his skills and playing style before the crash, there's a strong argument that his game would have translated well into the more athletic NBA. His basketball IQ, playmaking ability, and shooting touch were already top-notch, and his versatility find cheap car insurance on the court could have allowed him to adapt to the faster, more physically demanding nature of the league.
