  • 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup (Jul 2-10)

    Group A
    New Zealand
    France
    Serbia
    Canada

    Group B
    Spain
    Dominican Republic
    Japan
    Lithuania

    Group C
    United States
    Mali
    Slovenia
    Lebanon

    Group D
    Australia
    Argentina
    Egypt
    Poland

US team was named yesterday. Big changes from the U16 team last year as #2 scorer Rob Dillingham (31 points in the final against Argentina) was not at the tryouts, and Jalen Lewis and Bryson Tucker, the #3 and #4 scorers last year, did not make the team.

I'll post a preview on Canada later. I think they be pretty good. Despite missing the top NBA prospect for this age grouop, (Efeosa Oliogu) most of the best of rest seem to be playing.

    Some names to wach include:
    Christian Nitu (6'11 PF)
    Jovan Milicevic (6'7 SF/PF)
    Keenan Emmanuel (5'10 PG)
    Ishan Sharma (6'5 SG)
    Jacob Theodosiou (6'3 SG)

And just to throw some chaos into the mix the worlds tallest teenager, 7'6 (229cm) Olivier Rioux will be playing. He's not that good (but not horrible), and his height alone will cause some problems.

I sincerely want to see the Philippines Basketball team return to the Olympic Games after not being able to qualify in many straight years since the 1972 Munich Olympics.
I'm astonished Brazil isn't present. Dominica is obviously talented not just in baseball, but also in basketball.

Is that France v Argentian a misprint? 105-38? What? (EDIT: confirmed score)

Canada reportedly lost to Slovenia 83-73 in Slovenia yesterday. Another game today.

Spain 83-60 Dominican Republic and US 71-61 Lithuania. US shot poorly but had a comfortable lead throughout most of the game.

What's a Power ranking going into this?
I think they top four seem to be
              USA
              France
              Spain
              Serbia

Probably Canada after that then Poland/Slovenia/Lithuania not too far behaind. Not sure after that. Where do the Aussie's sit?

Aussies outside of the top 8 probably, junior program not as good as other countries. No effect on the senior program as yet. all of asia could possibly finish 10-16.

Only good thing early on is we can get out of the group, probably one of the weakest.

I think the US is more vulnerable than in the past due to lack of dominant big men.

Everyone gets out of the group stage. It is all about seeding 1 through 4 and hoping you avoid the USA, Spain and France in the first round.

US edged Spain 73-69. Neither team executed well in the final minutes but the US was able to make some extra hustle plays.

Despite the personnel changes, from what I saw the US team was similar to last year's U16 in terms of struggling to impose their preferred 100 mph style of play on a decent opponent while being very ordinary in their halfcourt offense. After massacring the competition in 2016 and 2018 I think they can be challenged this year. Still the favorites though.

If anyone wants a deep dive into the Canadian team:

What are you confused about Hepcat? The high rank of the Aussie's relative to the previous comment? Or Lithuania's low rank?
Not much else seems too out of line....

Game of the day was Lithuania rallying from 13 points behind to beat Spain. Shows how much friendly results mean.

US starting five overwhelmed Lebanon--at one point Ronald Holland was +45 in 12 minutes of playing time--the bench struggled for a while but held a dunkfest in the fourth quarter. One of the developing questions is whether they will get three point shooting from anyone other than Castillo.

Canada was dominant against New Zealand. NZ didn’t bring Dontae Russo-Nance, who is already averaging double figures in the NZNBL.

4-0 for the Americas teams today, not expecting that to hold up.
