  • QF: USA vs Argentina

A familiar Americas match-up, this time in the Olympic quarterfinal.

This could be the final Olympic tournament for the Golden Generation of Argentina basketball, so they might as well go out here in a blaze of glory.

        2004 is a looong time ago. We own Argentina since then. '06, '07 2x, '08, ' 12 2x, . 6 in a row not counting exhibitions.

*Breathes with a sigh of relief.

Seriously, USA needs to get out of this funk and find that elusive rhythm.

That recipe goes wayback during the joke of a preparation schedule and Coach K failing to craft a rotation until it materialized somewhat during the previous three games against Australia, Serbia and France.

Still, what optimism is left is that we haven't really seen USA with their A game or flash their potential.

This match-up is both a blessing and a curse...Argentina, with its aging squad, had to endure five no-let-up games in group B. It's possible they could be fatigued entering 1/4 final play. Also, they are probably the least athletic team the US has faced all tournament long, so I expect the US to dominate the rebounds on both the offensive and defensive side. Now the bad news...Argentina is the last team to beat the us in Olympic play. They know what it takes to beat us and if they get on one of those offensive rolls we could be in serious trouble. The crowd will also be a factor...the entire arena (not just Argentine fans) will be against us, so they had better buckle up and be ready for the hostility and chippiness that's sure to ensue.

That may have been a while ago, but they're still running the same stuff they ran back in 2004. With the US and its glaring defensive problems, I can see Argentines chopping us apart in portions of the game. Having said that, I'm confident we have enough firepower to out pace them in 40 mins., but it'll be an interesting contest. I hope the players brought their earplugs.

nocioni and co. were shooting 3s like madmen but still needed 2 OT to dispose brazil. upset is probable but not likely.

In one sense I would have preferred for us to play Croatia, but in another sense I love that it's lined up for us to play Argentina and Spain again.

More nervous about this game than in 2012, since we're not quite the scoring machine we were in London. Remember, they scored 59 points on us in the first half the game after our close call against Lithuania, but then we scored a million points in the third quarter and all anyone remembers about that game is the Campazzo punch. The exhibition game was probably only 75% intensity on their part, but we need to follow the same blueprint--heavy defensive pressure and Cousins with his head on straight dominating in the paint.

To be honest I see this American team getting beaten at some point, I may be wrong but they haven't been that impressive and dominate as past teams. They lack teamwork, and rely on pure shooting talent, the Australians had them for 3/4q's , but fell away with aron baynes falling to mark anyone and letting melo have free looks all day. But the point is the rest of the teams can get this American team, it wouldn't shock me at all to be honest.

Should be an easy win for the US. Argentina doesn't have the athleticism or the size to hang with us.

if both teams play their A-game, USA by 10 points.
