  • If Nigeria basketball team wins a medal, shouldn't it share the medal with the US?

This of course is hypothetical, but America is 1000 times more important to the team's success than the country of Nigeria. I'm not talking about the governments, just the society, infrastructure, culture etc.

People complain about Greece, Italy and Canada not in the Olympic basketball tournament but the truth is there're more deserving players who can't participate. America probably has thousands of players who are better than the Chinese team, so technically U.S. could field like 100 basketball teams to play in the Olympics. Why is that not allowed, while these players playing for another country is encouraged? If they had a choice, would the Ike Diogus want to play for the US or Nigeria? Becky Hammon won a bronze for Russia but put a hand over her heart when the American anthem was playing.

I think Olympics should just let a country field as many teams/individuals as possible if they are capable, and let the best players/teams participate. For example, America could send Team New York, Team Texas, or even Team Chicago, if it comes down to that. Just like FIBA 3X3 (I believe?) This will also eliminate the terrible problem of naturalizing players who have no desire to fit in culturally with the countries they are representing.

Basketball is not that bad because FIBA only allows 1 naturalized players per team, but some other sports like table tennis in order to have more "parity" let western teams use as many naturalized players as they can find, and the end result is that more than 1/2 of the European ping pong Olympians are Chinese, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_...Women%27s_team It's effectively encouraging all Chinese players who can't make the China NT to become Europeans/Americans/Aussies and what is the point of that? Is this the Olympic spirit?

Naturalization should be banned all together.

These Nigerian guys may have trained, grown up or immigrated to America but that have strong Nigerian roots. I have no problem with these guys playing for team Nigeria. So they developed there skills in USA, that does that make them less Nigerian. Many countries have players developing in the USA. Some of those have duel citizenship. That's just fine.

Team California could be Paul George, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, James Harden, DeMar DeRozan, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Damien Lillard, Tyson Chandler, Brook Lopez, Paul Pierce (captain), Jeremy Lin (?), Steve Kerr (coach). That would be a pretty good team, especially if they played together on a regular basis.

If we split it into east and west regions it would be even more competitive.

So many Filipino-Foreigners like Jordan Clarkson and Aaron Craft are not allowed to suit up for the Philippines but FIBA is very lenient when it comes to Nigeria.

I do not fully understand FIBA rules. I will say that everyone should follow the same rules. If FIBA lets Nigeria play and in the same situation does not let phillipians play that is wrong.

From what little I have found out all but one of the Nigerian players have both parents that were born in Nigeria and immigrated to the USA. The only exception I found is Aminu who has an American born mother. Everyone else I found has parents born in Nigeria and dual citizenship. They are all Nigerians. Many of them have Nigerian tribe affiliations. I have no problem with this. I'm glad FIBA lets them play for their parents country, their country.

Why won't FIBA let Jordan Clarkson & Aaron Craft play? Did both their parents come from Philipians?

I just read that FIBA allows Jordan Clarkson to suit up for phillipines. The only reason he does not play yet is because schedule problems with his NBA team. FIBA said its ok he has had pinoy passport since he was 12.

This thread is made out of envy over Nigeria NT where it snatched a game while Chinese NT has none.

The question is: do Chinese immigrants (first, second, third, etc. generation) in the USA have dual citizenship? Or is China trying to give them double citizenship? Or is China allowing dual citizenship to its citizens?
Because various countries are using American-X players in their team: actually, in Europe, Greece is using (or may use) lots of Greek-Americans: Koufos, Calathes, Mpramos, Dorsey. Greek community in the USA is strong, and it should be the same with the Chinese one (and in the USA there are many Chinatowns and - as I know - there are not Ellinopolis at all).

Maybe it's matter of decisions of the government or federation, in the case of China.

About passports... if Calabria plays for Italy or Koufos plays for Greece or American-Nigerians play for Nigeria, it's not a problem. It's quite normal in a global world. What's not normal is that Hammon or Holden play for Russia, McCalebb for Fyrom, Domercant for Bosnia Hercegovina, Page for Serbia.
This is something that FIBA should work on. One given-passport-for-free player is still sort-of-accettable, but what if at some point FIBA decides that paying you can put on your team whoever you want? Are we going to have some Qatar like in handball going to win medals with a World Stars team of mercenaries?

Mekejlebovski is an old macedonian surname, you should take him out of this list.

Regarding the question,I don't get it at all.As far as they keep connections with Nigeria, why they shouldn't be eligible to play for them?

because every proffesional american basketball player except for Scottie Pippen could play for another country. And every Argentinian could play for Italy,Spain or Germany(Walter Herman)..Do we draw the line somewhere?

With Nigeria (and a few other countries) it's less an issue with naturalization, and more an issue how that particular country handles citizenship. It's not like FIBA can dictate to a country who can or can't be dual citizens.
