I read some months ago that Vasquez said that he prefers proving himself once again to the NT.

Defensive minded team, limited in offense. Plays team oriented basketball. Main star of course is Greivis Vasquez (last season spent in Milwaukee Bucks, now moved to Brooklyn), but so far in friendlies he shows really nothing, even tho he used to be huge contributor for his country, but there's still time, they needs his scoring a lot as defense alone obviously won't win the games in tournament of such caliber. Another key player John Cox, veteran guard who played in Europe lot of years, now finishing career in Venezuela, also PG Gregory Vargas, now playin' in Israel, aptain wing player Jose Vargas. Not much known names, but good team chemistry, fighting spirit with good coach might bring them win or two, but that's all

Hard to add anything else. Just not so typical Latino team, which only runs and guns. Of course at times that hot Latino temper bursts out, but current coach did lot of job since 2012 when he took over, to make them different than others in region and that lead to success. They reminds me a bit of FYROM NT from McCalebb time (2011-2013), one big star (Bo = Greivis Vasquez), few other good players and bunch of hardworking guys who gives it all on the court. Not much talent, but big heart, determination. Really a lot will depend on Greivis and his offensive skills. But he is in really bad shape, missed the game yesterday vs Spain cause of that, and not much time left till tournament. If he won't be ready, there's no point to expect miracles. Venezuela won without him and John Cox last year, but now the compatition will be few levels higher, so they needs a boost from their star player

he was not in the team for the first Spain - Venezuela game, nor he is in the team tonight for the second game against the same team.

Reports in the Venezuelan press seem to indicate that Greivis Vasquez’s status with the Venezuelan Olympic team remains uncertain. Vasquez didn’t play this weekend in a “friendly” game vs. Spain, meaning that of the Venezuelans’ four friendlies so far, he’s only played in one vs. Lithuania and only 17 minutes in that one, contributing three points, an assist, and a rebound. In the matches against Belarus and the Netherlands he did not participate at all because he was working out the details of his contract with Brooklyn. He signed a one-year, $5 million contract, including bonuses, in New York on July 10.

In explaining why Vasquez did not play against Spain, Venezuelan coach Nestor Garcia said he has been “concentrating on getting in shape physically.” Vasquez had surgery in December to remove a bone spur and loose bodies from his ankle. He was expected to be ready to return in April, but the Bucks season had already ended by then. There’s been no indication that Vasquez won’t be ready for training camp in October.

It seems that there are some insurance issues too. Atleast that's what I was able to understand from google translated federation site. It's getting really complicated for Venezuela. Moreover since only one friendly left... The question is, whether is Greivis able to participate in practises, if so then his integration into team will be easier, but if not - well, it looks like there will be a long and tough tournament for La Vinotinto

I watched both their games against Canada last FIBA Americas and I generally agree with the comments above. Venezuela is not a talented team but have an excellent coach and play with allot of heart and pretty good chemistry.

They had a very smart game plan against Canada, slowing the game down, clutching a grabbing, trying to negate the Canadian athletic, size and speed advantage - hoping to keep the game close where anything can happen. Every time Canada went on a run and was about to blow the game open, they seemed to slowed the game down and stopped the clock. They mixed that with forcing some very sloppy play by Canada and routinely hitting miraculous, off balanced 3s while being draped by a Canadian defender with a second or two on the shot clock. They also smartly played a very rough and physical game throwing the young Canadians off their game even more.

Nestor thoroughly out-coached the Canadian coach - Jay Triano (not that hard to do) and masterfully played the referees to Venezuela's distinct advantage. The game never should have been close but the stars aligned and they are in the Olympics*. Venezuela deserves heavy praise for that.

Venezuela should be the worst team in the Olympics, with their only reasonable shot to win a game would be against China. I hope they win more games, merely for the possibility to help lessen the shame Canadian basketball fans are still feeling.




* the damage done to the Canadian basketball program is worse than many could imagine, with now rumors circulating that Andrew Wiggins (and others) lost faith in the coaching staff and may never rejoin the team.
