    Is this sarcasm?

Anyway, I agree Sun Yue has been very disappointing, and yes he disappears often but he played well in 2010 World Champs.

Give Russia a lot of credit, they look like a strong medal contender to me. Impressive size and toughness.

True. China can bully the smaller teams but looks like boys amongst men when pitted against real teams. Since you compared it to RP i guess you can relate as well that it must be very frustrating-- not enough development despite being a constant in many Olympics now. i guess mediocrity is really the ceiling for such teams
If there is no basketball in heaven, i am NOT going.

Harsh words, but nothing to disagree with here. It all filters down to the junior level, how we (and you) select talents and develop and train young players - not something that can be fundamentally changed in a few years.

However, I don't think there are this many "real teams", Australia was down by 20+ to Spain today in Q3 before Spain let the bench finish the 4th quarter, so it's not like all the non-Asian teams are at the same level. However, Australia is also big and quick and they play extremely physical. Hard test for us two days later, we need to attack the basket, so what if you get blocked or if there is no foul called after you fall on your ass 3 times, no more standing around like scarecrows (and look like crows that have been scared).

i expected some sort of rebuttal but got blunt honesty back. That's even more admirable. China should win against GB else it would be a disappointing Olympics indeed.

I could have said something like that, but it's pointless. The truth of the matter is, Asian teams cannot compete with the top few teams in the world. There are many reasons to that, genetics, geographic separation, culture, political mess (including bureaucracy), organization, etc. Right now it all seems like it's not so much as catching up but trying to prevent the gap from getting larger and larger. Even Africa looks like they could surpass Asia with added investment.

China's assistant Pete Philo on ESPN 730 after the game:

He seems optimistic about the chances against Australia. Whatever the result, definitely cannot play like we did today.
